Real Health with Karl Henry: Physio fixes – Tech neck, back pain and aging well with Physio Jenny Branigan

Jenny Branigan, chartered Physio and territory manager of parkrun Ireland joins me on this week's episode of The Real Health podcast. I asked the physio how to maintain lean muscle mass. The mobility expert explained, 'In your mid to late thirties, that's when lean muscle mass starts to reduce. So, a lot of people think about it later, they think about it near retirement. But you have to think about it much earlier because you need to counteract that, and that's the biggest message, I think. We want people to be lifting weights much earlier than they are.' During the conversation we spoke about how important increased movement is, as we age. The physio pointed out that, 'The World Health Organization Guidelines for Physical Activity recommend 150 minutes of moderate activity per week (cardiovascular activity), and two strengthening sessions. But from 65 onwards they recommend three and that's because of the lean muscle mass piece. You can listen to the full episode here or wherever you get your podcasts.

Real Health podcast: Tax hacks – get your money back with The Tax Nerd Mairéad O'Driscoll

Mairéad O'Driscoll, professional tax advisor AKA The Tax Nerd joins me on this week's episode of The Real Health podcast to demystify tax. One of the items I wanted to get to is medical expenses and it turns out you can claim back a lot. The Tax Nerd told me, 'If you have any health expenses, you're entitled to 20% of the cost back. It's on obvious things like going to the GP for checkups, hospital visits but you also get it on monthly prescriptions. Any prescription at all.' Navigating the Revenue website can be fear inducing but the tax advisor said it's really easy to use. She says, 'There's section three which is the tax credits and relief section, and that has everything in there. There's working from home relief, there's flat rate expenses, the rent tax credit, it's all in the same place. You literally put in the amount and get your money back in a few working days.' Real Health podcast: Karl's Q&A - Fitness on holidays, non-fad diets and not going too hard too soon

Producer, JJ Clarke, joins me on this week's bonus episode of The Real Health podcast where I answer the most common listener questions on health and fitness. Question: How do I maintain fitness during the big holiday? I really like this question as most people stop training completely on holiday. I told producer JJ, 'It shouldn't be all day eating and drinking. It's mapping it out and planning the big days. The breakfast should be the same as what you have at home. Just because you're at the hotel buffet doesn't mean getting as much food in as possible, there's no need for that.' Question: I exercise regularly but haven't got the diet down. Where should I start regarding nutrition? When producer JJ asked me this question, I informed him that exercise is about a quarter of the jigsaw and nutrition makes up the other 75%. I explained, 'From a health perspective, you can't out train a bad diet. First, you track your food just by writing it down. Because chances are people know what to eat. It's the tracking that gives you accountability. Writing it down is simple and you will be able to self-regulate.' You can listen to the full episode here or wherever you get your podcasts.

Caroline Idiens, bestselling author of Fit at 50, fitness in midlife expert and personal trainer joins me on this week's episode of The Real Health podcast. I began by asking Caroline Idiens how she started her online business. She told me, 'When Covid hit, I thought, 'no one's gonna train online but we started with 30 clients in April 2020. On good old Zoom and it just exploded, like literally exploded and people started to join and that's when I got the Instagram account and we turned five years old two weeks ago.' The bestselling author had some great advice for starting out on your fitness journey. She explained, 'In the book we talk about walking because I think it's the most underrated of any exercise and we say to people, if you haven't got kit just get outside for a bit. Doesn't need to be hours. Get outside for 15, 30 minutes, but go with a friend. Go into nature, try to leave your phone behind.' Real Health podcast: Train your wallet - How to save with financial planner Leah McMahon

Financial planner from Castle Capital Limited, Leah McMahon, joins me on this week's episode of The Real Health podcast. I asked the financial planner about any tips that the listeners could use straight away. The money expert told me, ' I've recommended to all of my clients to actually do their grocery shopping online because there's total control and you can set a budget but with shopping in the aisles you can easily go over your limit.' This episode is about financial basics so I asked Leah what is the first thing people should do with their finances. She explained, 'First one is whether it's pen and paper, whether it's on an app, sit down and find out what it costs to run your household. How much does it actually cost? If you have to go through your bank statements, go through them because sometimes we have a decent idea, and sometimes we are way off.'
