Woman killed, man injured in double stabbing at Broward apartment complex: cops
Two people were attacked in a parking garage by a knife-wielding resident of a Broward apartment complex early Wednesday, leaving a woman dead and a man injured, according to police.
Around 1:50 a.m., Sunrise Police responded to a 911 call made at The Retreat at Sawgrass Village apartments on 3000 NW 130th Terrace, where they found the injured man outside the garage. Despite being stabbed in the throat, he was alert and able to tell them what happened.
He told officers that another man, identified Thursday as 21-year-old Jackson Sagesse, ran off after stabbing he and his friend in a black Mercedes Benz that they had just parked in a garage moments earlier.
Officers subsequently found the woman inside the Mercedes, lying in the back seat with multiple stab wounds to her neck. They found her dead minutes later. A steak knife, believed to be from a kitchen set, was found on the car's front passenger seat.
Security camera footage helped investigators piece together what happened. The video shows the Mercedes arriving and parking in a restricted spot near a handicap space. The driver then gets out of the car and exits the cameras view.
A short time later, Sagesse appears on camera entering the garage, holding what resembled a metallic object.
The woman could be seen stepping out of the car, but swiftly tried to hop back inside when she noticed Segasse approaching. Before she could close the car door, Sagesse pried it open and stabbed her repeatedly, according to police.
About a minute later, police say the video showed Sagesse stopped his attack and closed the car door.
The driver, who had briefly stepped away, walked back into the camera frame and could be seen confronting Sagesse. A struggle ensued, during which Sagesse stabbed the man in the throat, according to police. Somehow, he managed to escape and call for help.
Sagesse tried to drive off in the Mercedes, but failed to get the car in reverse. He resorted to fleeing on foot, heading toward a building within the same apartment complex at 3004 NW 130th Terrace, where he lives with his mother.
An employee at the apartment complex recognized Sagesse and told officers he lived in unit 153. Police found him there and took him into custody. He was wearing the same clothes seen in the surveillance footage. Another steak knife was found in his pocket, similar to the one in the car.
A search of his apartment revealed blood on a sliding door and a kitchen knife block missing two steak knives — matching the ones investigators recovered.
Sagesse was questioned by detectives, but according to the redacted arrest report, his answers were vague and inconsistent. Police have not confirmed whether he knew the victims.
Sagesse is charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder. He is being held without bond at the Broward Main Jail.
