How does the Social Security Administration know the most popular names? For parents to be able to claim that new bundle of joy as a dependent, the baby needs to have a Social Security number, and parents apply for that number and card on their behalf. You did remember to do that, right?

Across the U.S., Alexander ranked No. 27.
