Johnstown council adjusts Central Park groundbreaking redesign, eyes fall 2025

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WTAJ) — Plans to transform Johnstown's Central Park are moving forward with a few new adjustments, as city council members prepare for construction to begin this fall, according to our media partners at The Tribune Democrat. During a workshop Wednesday, Johnstown City Council reviewed updated recommendations from CJL Engineering, which is now finalizing the park's redesign. The plan was initially developed in 2023 by New York-based Scape Landscape Architecture, with CJL as a subcontractor. One of the key changes involves adding a concrete walkway that cuts diagonally through the park from corner to corner. Project leader Alyssa Rouser of CJL Engineering said the new pathway would be anchored by a water feature at the park's center. While the final design of the feature remains undecided, council members collectively agreed to replace the existing fountain with something new. Aside from the pathway and fountain changes, the remainder of the redesign is expected to stay consistent with the original vision. Officials have not yet confirmed a specific construction start date but indicated that work is slated to begin sometime this fall. The Central Park redesign is part of a broader effort to enhance public spaces in downtown Johnstown and improve the city's walkability and aesthetics. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
