Great Crossing wins Sweet 16 boys state championship

LEXINGTON, Ky. (FOX 56) — Great Crossing High School opened in 2019 and quickly became one of the best boys basketball teams in the state. Six years after opening, they can call themselves state champions. Great Crossing and Montgomery County are final four bound The Warhawks took down Bowling Green, 71-61 to win the KHSAA Sweet 16 boys state championship on Saturday night at Rupp Arena. 'I'd be lying to you if I thought six years in we were going to be hoisting the trophy. On day one, you know, April of whatever, 2019, when these guys showed up, we felt pretty confident that we had an opportunity, you know, to do what we're doing tonight,' Great Crossing head coach Steve Page said. Future Kentucky big man Malachi Moreno shined in his final high school game, scoring 24 points on 10-of-11 shooting and grabbed 15 rebounds for another double-double, adding three blocks while playing in all 32 minutes. Mr. Basketball winner and future Kentucky Wildcat Travis Perry leads Lyon County to glory Moreno followed in Travis Perry's footsteps by winning a high school state title at Rupp Arena before moving on to making Rupp his new home at Kentucky. Perry led Lyon County to a win over Trent Noah and Harlan County to cut down the nets, beating Great Crossing in the state semifinals. 'It's definitely a surreal moment because I wanted to end my high school career on this floor holding a big ol' trophy and I know it wasn't my last time on this floor but my last time in a Great Crossing uniform so it's honestly surreal and coach is gonna have a tough time taking this jersey away from me,' Moreno said. Great Crossing looks to finish the job this weekend in state tournament The Warhawks returned this season with one goal: winning a state championship. Fellow seniors Vince Dawson (18 points) and Gage Richardson (15 points) helped them achieve that goal. Great Crossing beat Montgomery County in the state semifinal earlier on Saturday, winning 70-49.
