Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman Plot Against Each Other in Twisty 'The Roses' Trailer

Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman are bringing a new twist on a classic movie. Searchlight Pictures has released the trailer for the upcoming movie The Roses, described as a "reimagining" of the 1989 hit The War of the Roses that sees Cumberbatch, 48, and Colman, 51, portray married couple Theo and Ivy, whose picture-perfect life together goes awry when Ivy's career takes off while Theo is fired from his job as an architect. As the trailer shows, Theo quickly grows frustrated by his lack of career success and the couple begin to bicker, argue and eventually begin to move through with a divorce. As resentment grows between Ivy and Theo, their plots to mess with each other grow worse — culminating with Ivy pointing a gun at her husband in one moment. "Life seems easy for picture-perfect couple Ivy (Olivia Colman) and Theo (Benedict Cumberbatch): successful careers, a loving marriage, great kids," reads a synopsis. "But beneath the façade of their supposed ideal life, a storm is brewing – as Theo's career nosedives while Ivy's own ambitions take off, a tinderbox of fierce competition and hidden resentment ignites." Related: Benedict Cumberbatch Says He Regrets Playing Non-Binary Zoolander 2 Character: 'Wouldn't Do That Again' The Roses also costars Andy Samberg and Kate McKinnon, who appear to portray friends of Theo and Ivy's. McKinnon's character is shown propositioning Theo as he opens up to them about his marital struggles. Allison Janney appears to portray Ivy's lawyer, who threatens to take "everything" in the couple's divorce proceedings. ‘The Roses': Searchlight's ‘War of the Roses' Remake Sets Summer 2025 Release

'The Roses,' a reimagining of the 1989 dark comedy 'The War of the Roses,' will be released on Aug. 29, 2025, Searchlight announced on Tuesday. The new film will be directed by Jay Roach ('Bombshell') and stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman. Life seems easy for picture-perfect couple Ivy (Colman) and Theo (Cumberbatch): successful careers, a loving marriage, great kids. But beneath the façade of their supposed ideal life, a storm is brewing – as Theo's career nosedives while Ivy's own ambitions take off, a tinderbox of fierce competition and hidden resentment ignites. 'The Roses' is inspired by the 1989 classic film 'The War of the Roses,' based on the novel by Warren Adler. Directed by Danny DeVito and starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner, 'The War of the Roses' was a black comedy that earned a BAFTA and three Golden Globe nominations. Roach directed the new version of the divorce story from a screenplay written by Tony McNamara, who previously earned his second Oscar nomination for the screenplay to Yorgos Lanthimos' 'Poor Things.' Cumberbatch produced the film through his SunnyMarch banner alongside Leah Clarke and Adam Ackland, who have been in development on the project since 2017. Colman produced under South of the River with Ed Sinclair and Tom Carver. Roach and Michelle Graham also produced with Jonathan R. Adler and Michael Adler of Adler Entertainment Trust as executive producers. The film is part of a first-look deal between them and Searchlight.
