Theatre Baton Rouge to close due to financial hardship; final showtime in March
BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Theatre Baton Rouge is expected to host its final production on March 23. According to a release, the theatre company will not continue to produce shows and offer educational programs due to its financial situation. The company said the impact COVID-19 had on the theatre industry forced many institutions to close their doors. Theatre Baton Rouge relied on ticket sales and subscriptions. But the rising costs of production, materials and operations have placed a strain on the company to remain open. A previous campaign, Light the Stage, cleared debts for Theatre Baton Rouge but was unable to offer long-term stability, according to TBR. Theatre Baton Rouge's final show, Xanadu, will be held on Sunday, March 23, to conclude their 79th season. Tickets are available now and start at $43. The earliest showing of Xanadu is at 7:30 p.m., Friday, March 7. See all showtimes here. TBR left a message for members who helped throughout the years. 'Whether you stepped onto our stage, worked behind the scenes, ushered patrons, designed sets, directed, choreographed, taught, or supported us as an employee, sponsor, donor, or audience member over these past 79 years, you have been part of something truly special. Theatre Baton Rouge has never just been about the shows—it has been about the people, the passion, and the lifelong friendships built here. The memories we have made together will live on far beyond our final curtain call.' Theatre Baton Rouge volunteers raise concern after controversial casting
BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) —Theatre volunteers in Baton Rouge took to social media concerns over a specific casting call that regarded one particular race for the role. Tadrian Taylor is a former volunteer for Theatre Baton Rouge. He said he saw the casting for 'Cat on a Hot Tin Roof', which had two characters specifically wanting Black actors to play servants. Taylor said that although set in a certain time, it was concerning that these were the only roles for Black actors to audition for. 'From what I know about Cat on Hot Tin Roof, well, I don't know that in 2025 race is an important part of the story, that we need the servants to be black,' he said. After reaching out to the theatre for a response, they released a statement saying, in part, that they take full accountability for the pain caused by the casting announcement. And are working to address the issue with transparency and immediately take the next steps. Taylor said after this incident, hopefully, the theatre community can come together to have a deeper conversation on inclusion. 'Wondering if maybe we could have a conversation about the different ways in which those issues are like entrenched to build a community theater that is representative of the community,' said Taylor. The theatre is working to address the matter with board members on how to avoid a similar situation happening again. Theatre Baton Rouge has since removed 'race' as a description in the casting call.
