Giants Candidates To Sign Veteran Tight End
Perhaps the most surprising part of the New York Giants' offseason was the limited change to the starting offense. Russell Wilson is a sizable upgrade over Daniel Jones, and Jaxson Dart will eventually get his chance to usher in the next era of Giants football. The supporting cast, though, is almost identical. That leaves New York with an acceptable offensive line, at least while healthy, a league-average receiving corps, and a promising young ground game. Advertisement The weakest link of that unit is at tight end, where Theo Johnson is set to start after an underwhelming rookie season. He's justifiably being given the grace to develop at a hard position that is notoriously hard to learn, but it projects to be a sore spot in the passing offense. As such, Pro Football Focus listed the Giants as candidates to sign a playmaking tight end late in free agency. 'The Giants currently house a pair of young tight ends in Daniel Bellinger and Theo Johnson, but neither has managed to produce a PFF receiving grade above 58.0,' Mason Cameron wrote. 'While there is no shortage of quality pass catchers in New York, the offense could use a big-bodied threat in the receiving game. 'Gerald Everett could fit the bill for the Giants. Although Everett struggled to produce in Chicago last season, he is familiar with Russell Wilson, having played together in 2023. That season, Everett posted a 115.0 passer rating when targeted, the highest of his career.' Advertisement Everett didn't do much of anything in 2024, logging just eight catches for 36 yards. Still, his career is littered with semi-productive seasons between 400 and 560 yards. New York would take that production from the second tight end spot. He wouldn't be taking playing time away from Chris Manhertz, the team's premier blocking tight end, but he could reasonably be expected to challenge Bellinger. As an elite athlete, he offers an enticing blend of athletic traits that make him strong after the catch and underneath as a separator. He'd insulate the room and inject it with a little more explosiveness without costing the Giants anything significant. New York may look for veteran additions to the 90-man roster as the offseason continues. Even with tempered expectations, he remains a viable option for the offense. New York Giants' Matt Swensen wins first place in Hall of Fame photo contest
New York Giants creative and photography director Matt Swenson's photo of three Giants rookies during a pregame "contemplative moment" won first prize out of 1,200 entries in the Feature category in the Pro Football Hall of Fame's annual photo contest. The black-and-white photo shows tight end Theo Johnson, cornerback Dru Phillips, and wide receiver Malik Nabers "taking a moment in deep thought before the Giants' primetime game against the Pittsburgh Steelers at Acrisure Stadium on Oct. 28, 2024." "There's always a level of chaos during pre-game introductions, especially as the road team, and that is when I captured this photo," Swensen recalled in an interview with "On the opposite side of the field, I noticed three of our rookies in the end zone and they were backlit by the fireworks. I ran over trying not to be too intrusive in the moment because that's their time to get mentally ready."The Giants lost the game, 26-18, but it was obviously not a wasted effort, especially for Swenson. New York Giants TE Theo Johnson cleared to run
New York Giants TE Theo Johnson cleared to run The New York Giants' 2024 draft class is being considered one of their strongest in recent years. They added several players they can build their future around and all six have already displayed they can play at the NFL level. One of the more interesting of the group is fourth-round pick Theo Johnson, a big, fast tight end that has gigantic upside. Johnson played in 12 games as a rookie in 2024, starting 11. He caught 29 of his 43 targets for 331 yards with 16 first downs and a score. Late in the season, Johnson suffered the dreaded Lisfranc injury and was sidelined for the remainder of the season. The good news is Johnson has been cleared to run and should be ready for the upcoming season. The Giants have a fairly deep tight end room with Johnson, Daniel Bellinger, Chris Manhertz and Greg Dulcich, but it's Johnson that the club is most excited about. Johnson, coming from a winning college organization in Penn State, he was not used to losing. 2024 was a trying experience for him as his new team won just three of their 17 games. "It's tough coming in every week and trying to put your best foot forward, and falling short is not easy, but it's hard to win games in this league," Johnson said in an interview with the CBC in January. "I think the struggles that we went through this year gave me a lot of learning opportunities. I'm going to take that into consideration this year, and this off-season, because I don't want to ever go through that again. "I think I'm going to play a big role, and being able to help turn this organization around and turn this offence around. We know what we do is just a matter about going out there and doing it week in and week out." Johnson, like the rest of the world, still doesn't know who will be throwing the passes to him this year, but that will work itself out shortly.
