Fireman and historian remembers historic fires in Thibodaux

THIBODAUX, La. (WGNO) — Firemen with the Thibodaux Volunteer Fire Department have been fighting fires around town for years. There are a few fires that stand out for one fireman and historian's mind. New South Thibodaux Fire Station and home of Engine 26 Over the years, Thibodaux has had a rich history with some fires that have happened at landmarks all over the city. 'There was a fire that destroyed St. Joseph's Catholic Church on LA-1 during the early 1900's. It was a memorable fire for this town. There was a fire in the sacristy that rapidly spread. There were relics of St. Valerie that were brought in the early 1800's from Europe to Thibodaux. The firefighters went in and rescued St. Valerie,' Christopher Riviere, Deputy Chief of Thibodaux Fire Department said. Another fire that Riviere remembers is the fire known as the Demitasse fire on St. Mary Street which happened many years ago. 'The building was a lumber yard, and then it was converted into an antique store, refinishing place, a restaurant. It was a major fire and I remember fighting that fire as an officer during that time,' Riviere said. 'I can remember as a young kid my dad was going out to the fire. I remember on my way to elementary school he took me out to see the remains of it. Luckily they were able to save the majority of the building. I remember seeing a burnt out roof on top of the two-story brick building,' he said. Riviere said over the years, they have been there, and will continue to be there to fight the fires that happen in Thibodaux. 'Over the years, the proficiency of our department has been rated second to none because of training and the time the volunteers put in,' he arrested following Westwego fatal shooting 'Havana Nights' annual therapy fundraising gala held in Covington Fireman and historian remembers historic fires in Thibodaux Two more arrested in Tickfaw fentanyl overdose case Driver, pedestrian killed in separate Slidell-area crashes Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — He's small but mighty, and he might be on your tail. Devarjaye 'DJ' Daniels, 13, was made an honorary officer of the New Orleans Police Department on Tuesday, April 29 and received the Department's Medal of Merit, presented by Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick. 'Become Something Greater' says Thibodaux Firemen's Fair 2025 poster artist Daniels was diagnosed with brain and spine cancer six year ago, and since then, he's made it his goal to become an honorary officer at one thousand police departments across the United States. The badge came with a challenge in New Orleans. Two crooks were on the run through the French Quarter, when Daniels demonstrated his law enforcement chops by chasing and collaring them both.
