Farmer dies in Indian gaur attack in Sakleshpur
A farmer died after being attacked by an Indian gaur near Kallahalli in Sakleshpur taluk on Sunday night.
Thimmappa, 70, of Kallahalli had been to work in an estate on Sunday. When he did not return in the evening, his family members went in search of him and found him dead in a shrub. The place is known for the movement of Indian gaurs. His body had injury marks. Thimmappa is survived by his wife and two children.
Following the incident, the residents staged a protest condemning the death. MLA for Sakleshpur Cement Manju met the family members.
Sourabh Kumar, Deputy Conservator of Forests of the Hassan division, told The Hindu that the place had been known for the movement of Indian gaurs. However, there had been no incident of the animal attacking humans. 'It is an unfortunate incident. The department has handed over a cheque of ₹20 lakh to the family of the victim,' he said.
Parts of Sakleshpur, Alur, and Belur are known for human-elephant conflict. Many people have died in elephant attacks in the Hassan district.
