Candy lovers: Say hello to Frosty Fusions at Wendy's

Wendy's is mixing things up with their Frosty menu yet again. You might remember their Thin Mints Frosty back during Girl Scout Cookie season, and last month the chain announced Frosty Swirls featuring three tasty new sauces. Now, Wendy's has revealed its new Frosty Fusions menu, taking Frosty Swirls to another level. With a Frosty Swirl, you can take your fave Frosty—vanilla or chocolate—and swirl in strawberry, caramel or brownie batter sauce. But why not go a step further and add a mix-in for an even sweeter treat? Here's how it works: Each Frosty Fusion features both a sauce and a crunchy mix-in to your chocolate or vanilla Frosty base. And these combos will surely impress. First up is the Pop-Tarts Strawberry Fusion that mixes strawberry sauce and bits of strawberry flavored Pop-Tarts Crunch Poppers. The Oreo Brownie Fusion combines brownie batter sauce with Oreo pieces (go with the chocolate Frosty for a real chocolate overload). And finally, the Caramel Crunch Fusion mixes caramel sauce and toffee bits for a sweet, buttery crunch. You know Wendy's is serious about these Frostys because they've upgraded their equipment for better mixing, ensuring a perfect swirl every time. There's even a sleek, new custom blue Frosty spoon specially-designed to scoop up every last bite. And yes, the new domed cups are ideal for dipping those Hot & Crispy Fries.

Wendy's menu drops popular item, adding new ones

Back in the 1960s and 1970s, fast-food menus rarely changed. In order to offer the "fast" part of fast food, chains had to keep their menus simple. That began to change in the 1980s and 1990s when limited-time offers became popular. Many of these were simple variants of regular menu items. Related: Struggling popular pizza chain closes locations, no bankruptcy yet It's not hard to add barbecue sauce to a Burger King Whopper or a McDonald's Quarter Pounder, but simple changes enabled these chains to market new offerings. In recent years, the pace of these developments and limited offers has increased. Seasonal items, like various chains' fish sandwiches, come back at roughly the same time each year (in this case, for the Lenten season). Others, like the McDonald's Shamrock Shake or Starbucks's Pumpkin Spice, are highly anticipated and seem to come earlier and stay longer each year. In other cases, various limited-time offers come and go on no real schedule. Some, like the McDonald's McRib, depend on the availability of the pork scraps that make up the sandwich, while others are used to drive customers to stores during slow times. In certain cases, fast-food kitchens have only limited capacity, meaning that one menu item must go away for another to appear. That's what's about to happen at Wendy's (WEN) . Wendy's locations have the capacity to make only two Frosty flavors at a time. Since chocolate is the classic flavor, it's kept on the menu, while vanilla gets swapped out for any new options. The chain is currently offering Chocolate and Girl Scout Thin Mint Frosties. That flavor was actually layered on top of the base chocolate or vanilla Frosty. "The Thin Mints Frosty combines the Classic Chocolate or Vanilla Frosty, swirled and topped with a rich, minty cookie crumble sauce inspired by the flavor of Girl Scout Thin Mints," the chain shared. "With both chocolate and vanilla to try, fans can choose their favorite ways to enjoy the Thin Mints Frosty." Those Frosty variants have been on the menu since late February, but they are expected to make way for new special Frosty flavors in both April and May. "I am counting down the days until Wendy's drops the new Frosty Swirls and Frosty Fusions! Enjoy the Thin Mints Frosty while you can because it's amazing, but we've got some crazy ones coming this spring," posted Snackolator on Instagram. Restaurant closings: Popular retail chain to close unprofitable store locationsBankrupt retail chain unloads store leases, key assetsPopular discount retailer files bankruptcy, closes all stores He shared that some flavors are coming in April, with new variants being added in May. "First we'll see the Frosty Fusions, which is effectively adding flavor swirls to either a chocolate or vanilla Frosty in brownie batter, caramel, and strawberry," he explained. "But then we get wild soon after with three mix-in options including toffee pieces, Oreo cookies, and Pop-Tarts." All these new options enable Wendy's to keep both vanilla and chocolate on the menu. Wendy's closed its year strongly, according to Chief Executive Kirk Tanner. "In the U.S., our traffic and dollar growth outpaced the [quick-service-restaurant] burger category," he said on the chain's fourth-quarter earnings call. "Growth was led by the success of our collaboration with Paramount, celebrating SpongeBob's 25th anniversary. At its peak, this fan favorite drove an impressive 20% lift in same-restaurant sales with increased traffic and an average check, including a Crabby Patty with nearly double our typical size," He also noted that more typical limited-time offers helped, too. "Growth in the quarter was also supported by innovative limited-time offerings, including our Salted Caramel Frosty and Mushroom Bacon Cheeseburger," he added. "The morning daypart continued to be a strong contributor to U.S. growth with sales up over 4% compared to the prior year." Related: Another big-name food brand files Chapter 11 bankruptcy The Frosty is an important part of the chain's plans going forward. "Our innovation extended beyond the breakfast daypart with a series of new menu items, including our Saucy Nuggs that expanded our chicken offerings," he said. "We also featured new limited-time Frosty flavors tailored to each season to provide fresh, exciting experiences that resonated with our customers throughout the year." Wendy's Is Giving Away Free Frostys This Week

Wendy's Frosty has had a big couple of weeks. First, it launched its new Thin Mints Frosty made with a first-of-its-kind Girl Scout Thin Mints-inspired cookie butter at the end of February. Then, it announced that it's releasing all-new Frosty Swirls and Frosty Fusions—letting you add sauces and mix-ins to your favorite Frosty flavor—later this spring. While we await the new Frosty innovations, whose official arrival date and flavors have yet to be revealed, we can still celebrate the delicious Thin Mints Frosty and its milestone as the first time Wendy's has ever had four Frostys on its menu. Because, unlike the other seasonal flavors, the Thin Mints Frosty didn't replace the beloved Vanilla Frosty—instead, you can add the Thin Mints cookie butter to either the Vanilla or Chocolate Frosty. The Thin Mints Frosty has quickly become a fan-favorite flavor at the drive-thru, and if you haven't had a chance to try it yet, Wendy's is giving you one for free. Don't worry, if you have tried (and love) the new Thin Mints Frosty, you can also get one for free with this deal. On March 12, otherwise known as National Girl Scout Day, Wendy's is giving away free small Thin Mints Frostys all day long. To score the free Frosty, you'll simply need to make a purchase using the Wendy's app. On March 12, when you order anything—no matter if it's a small fry or an entire combo meal—you will automatically qualify for a free small Thin Mints Frosty with your choice of Chocolate or Vanilla. You'll need to download the Wendy's app and sign up for a free rewards account to make the purchase, then navigate to the 'Offers' section. There, you'll find the free Frosty deal, and you'll click either 'Use in Mobile Order' or 'Use in Restaurant,' depending on how you want to order. If you're ordering ahead for pick-up or delivery, you'll click 'Use in Mobile Order,' then add your food and a small Thin Mints Frosty of your choice. If you're at the restaurant, you'll click 'Use in Restaurant,' which adds the offer to your digital rewards card. Before you pay, show the Wendy's employee your barcode for them to scan, and the free Frosty will automatically be applied. Once you have the Wendy's app, you'll also be able to play its new Thin Mints Frosty Adventure game. The in-app exclusive allows you to win food prizes daily and be entered into a drawing to win up to $10,000. A free Frosty to celebrate hump day? Now that's our kind of mid-week pick-me-up. Wendy's is giving the Frosty a major makeover

For decades, Wendy's offered only two Frosty flavors: Chocolate or vanilla. That's about to change, as the fast food chain is giving its iconic ice cream treat a makeover. In the coming months, Wendy's is rolling out new ways to customize the sweet treat with offerings called Frosty Swirls and Frosty Fusions, the company announced Thursday at its investor meeting. The former option lets customers add in various sauces, while the latter are mix-ins. Both can be combined together for new flavors that Wendy's hadn't offered before. The change to a signature menu item comes at a difficult time for the fast-food industry. Sales are down across the industry as inflation-weary customers search for better value. Plus, the restaurant category notoriously lacks brand loyalty — customers are just as happy to try out a competitor with a better deal or an enticing new menu option if their go-to restaurant's options feel stale. Wendy's didn't immediately reveal what Swirls and Fusions options will soon be available, but it's already giving fans a hint with the Girl Scouts' Thin Mints Frosty that's currently on sale. The limited time Frosty is swirled and topped with a creamy, minty cookie crumble sauce, marking one of the first time Wendy's has sold something like that. It's also a major expansion for the Frosty – customers have never been able to customize the treat, unlike competitors like McDonalds, which offer ice cream mix-ins and various flavors (when the machines work). However, in recent years, the chain has experimented with several seasonal flavors, such as pumpkin spice and peppermint, but those temporarily replaced vanilla. 'Frosty is the most iconic brand in the frozen treats category. It's unique to Wendy's, it's broadly appealing and our customers love it,' said Lindsay Radkoski, Wendy's US chief marketing officer, at the presentation. 'That's why we're evolving Frosty from a product to a treat destination. We will be that destination when a sweet treat strikes any and all of our customers.' Adding toppings and mix-ins changes that and is also 'very popular among younger consumers,' Radkoski said. 'They help them fill their desire for new flavors and variety.' Wendy's is also changing the Frosty packaging too, with a new cup, lid and a blue spoon 'designed for the perfect eating experience,' she said, adding that the new spoon 'allows customers to get every bit of Frosty goodness out of the cup.' Expanding the dessert's appeal is part of Wendy's plan to boost its global sales from $14.5 billion to $18 billion in the next three years. The chain also is aiming to grow the number of worldwide locations by nearly 15% to 8,300.
