Thirumavalavan alleges attempts to create confusion in DMK alliance
Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) founder and Chidambaram MP Thol. Thirumavalavan on Thursday alleged that attempts were being made to create confusion in the DMK alliance. He was responding to AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami's statement that the VCK and the CPI(M) were continuing in the DMK-led alliance despite being insulted by the ruling party, and that the AIADMK was rolling out the red carpet for any party willing to join its alliance. 'The remarks were made in order to create confusion in the DMK-led secular alliance,' Mr. Thirumavalavan said. 'The DMK-led alliance is strong, and the Opposition alliance has not even taken shape. The AIADMK and the BJP are making contradictory statements. Those opposing the DMK are scattered – that is the truth,' he said. Mr. Thirumavalavan ruled out the possibility of a three-cornered fight in the upcoming election. He also met actor-politician Kamal Haasan, who is set to take oath as a Rajya Sabha MP, and greeted him.

Pass resolution against new labour codes: VCK chief to CM
Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi founder Thol. Thirumavalavan, on Tuesday urged the State government to ensure implementation of Old Pension Scheme as promised by the DMK before the elections and said that Centre's decision to change 44 workers' welfare laws into four new Labour codes has snatched away workers' rights. Speaking to the reporters at Anna Arivalayam, Mr. Thirumavalavan said that the new codes has made sure that unorganised workers welfare unions will not be able to function as before. 'I have urged the Chief Minister to push back against the four new Labour codes and pass a resolution in the State Assembly,' he said. He added that several castes are being referred to in official documents with suffixes widely construed as disrespectful and urged the State Government to refer to castes with respect and dignity.

Tamil Nadu Rainbow Coalition criticises Thol. Thirumavalavan's remarks on same-sex love
The Tamil Nadu Rainbow Coalition (TNRC), a network of groups from the sexual and gender minority communities, on Wednesday (July 2, 2025) urged Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) founder and Chidambaram MP Thol. Thirumavalavan to 'reflect on the immense harm caused by his statement' against the LGBTQIA+ community recently. In a video clip that has gone viral, a youngster, during an event, seeks Mr. Thirumavalavan's views on same-sex love, to which he responds that it is a form of 'perversion'. The TNRC, in a statement, said that 'modern science and medicine have established, beyond doubt, that homosexuality is neither unnatural nor a disorder.' 'In 1990, the World Health Organization (WHO) removed homosexuality from the Interntational Classification of Disorders (ICD) and the understanding of homosexuality as a natural variation of human sexuality has been reiterated by the Indian Psychiatric Society and other professional medical associations. Further, Indian jurisprudence, dating back to the Delhi High Court (2009) and Supreme Court (2018), has reiterated that queer desire in natural and is not criminal so long as the individuals involved are adults engaged in consensual acts,' the statement said. The statement further said, 'Given this context, it is truly disappointing that individuals such as Thiruma, whose life's mission is rooted in eradicating social injustice, hold such inaccurate, outdated, and damaging views of lesbian, gay, bisexual, pansexual, and other queer persons. Equating the love and relationships of these and other sexual minority individuals to 'perversion' reinforces stigma, fuels discrimination, and directly contributes to the violence and alienation faced by queer people in Tamil Nadu and across India.' The TNRC urged Mr. Thirumavalavan to make efforts to examine his biases, and 'lead VCK by example towards a more inclusive and equitable world view.'

Waqf Amendment Act was passed without political ethics or moral fear, says VCK chief
VCK founder Thol. Thirumavalavan on Friday said the Waqf Amendment Act was passed in Parliament without 'political ethics or moral fear' by the BJP despite severe pushback from the Opposition ranks at every forum. Addressing a meeting organised by the All India Muslim Personal Law Board demanding the repeal of the amended legislation, Mr. Thirumavalavan alleged that the BJP had used the power of the government to target the Islamic community in the name of law and democracy over the last 11 years. 'Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), abrogation of Article 370, Triple Talaq, and Waqf Amendment Act targets Muslims. BJP doesn't meddle with administration of religious properties of other faiths but meddles with ones owned by the Muslim community. It uses the law to do what should be illegal. It goes against democracy by using the very democracy. On the surface of it, these actions are about targeting and harassing Muslims. But, if you look closely, it is about dismantling of the Constitution,' he said. The VCK opposed the law in Parliament and in the Joint Committee, besides organising protests. 'Now, we are organising a protest to safeguard secularism in Tiruchi. It has become necessary to sharpen our politics. There is no disagreement that all this is a result of hate politics against Muslims, but their eventual target is to dismantle the Constitution because it protects secularism,' he said. DMK senior leader A. Raja said Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah contended in Parliament that the Muslims were misappropriating Waqf properties and government-owned properties were being claimed as Waqf properties as reasons for passing the Act. 'All amendments brought in earlier had a basis. Whenever there was a law related to Muslims in Parliament, there would be widespread discussions and consultations and only then would the law be introduced,. I would like to ask Amit Shah and Prime Minister is the basis for the Waqf law that has been passed? Can you show that?' he said. Manithaneya Makkal Katchi president M.H. Jawahirullah said, 'Muslims have not understood the importance of protecting the Waqf properties. When the CAA was introduced, there were protests across India. Specifically, women began protesting in Shaheen Bhags. The Muslim community should have undertaken even more vibrant protests in the Waqf issue.'

AIADMK alliance still shapeless and BJP trying to gain foothold through religion, says Thirumavalavan
Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) leader and Chidambaram MP Thol. Thirumavalavan on Friday contended that the AIADMK-led alliance in Tamil Nadu remains 'shapeless'. In his view, Union Home Minister Amit Shah's second visit to the State (within two months), is part of an attempt to give the alliance some structure ahead of Assembly election. Speaking to the media persons ahead of the party's rally to be held in Tiruchi on June 14, Mr. Thirumavalavan criticised the BJP's religious outreach, including events such as the Murugan devotees' conference, stating that such religion-oriented politics should not be allowed to take root in Tamil Nadu. Mr. Thirumavalavan reaffirmed the party's commitment to the DMK-led front but insisted that coordination and seat-sharing must reflect mutual respect. 'No party should dominate or dictate terms. We have long demanded a share in governance, but this is not the moment to emphasise that,' he said. Responding to questions on TASMAC liquor outlets, Mr. Thirumavalavan reiterated the party's consistent stand that all State-run liquor shops must be shut permanently.
