Five seeding nuggets In the boys' and girls' basketball tournaments, nine of the 10 No. 1 seeds have reached the semifinals, with the Hopedale girls falling to No. 9 Lee in the Division 5 quarterfinals, making Lee the lowest-seeded girls team still dancing. On the boys' side, Only one school still has three teams playing: Medfield, which will be represented by its boys' and girls' hockey teams at TD Garden, while its top-seeded girls' basketball team has cruised into the Division 2 semifinals, where it will face No. 5 North Quincy on Tuesday at Bridgewater State (6 p.m.). Four schools have both their basketball teams still alive: Springfield Central, Norwell, St. Mary's, and Bourne. So what was the strongest hockey conference this season? In terms of tournament success, it's the Tri-Valley League, which put three teams in the state finals: Dedham boys, and both the Medfield boys and girls. Unsurprisingly, the boys' Division 1 final will be an all-Catholic Conference affair, but the two teams doing battle might surprise you: Catholic Memorial and St. John's (Shrewsbury), which started the season 1-9. The Patriot, Bay State, Hockomock, Cape and Islands, Northeastern, and Catholic Central conferences will also be represented at TD Garden. What about basketball? It might surprise you to learn the 11-school Berkshire County League still has six teams dancing: Taconic boys, Monument Mountain boys, Drury boys, Pittsfield girls, Lee girls, and Hoosac Valley girls. With five semifinal bids, the 52-school Pioneer Valley Conference has the second-most representation (Springfield Central boys and girls, Pioneer Valley boys, South Hadley girls, Renaissance girls) followed by the South Coast Conference (Bourne boys and girls, Somerset Berkley boys, Old Rochester boys) and Catholic Central (St. Mary's boys and girls, Bishop Feehan girls, Cathedral girls) with four each. The rest: Hockomock (3), South Shore (2), Bay State (2), Midland-Wachusett (2), Patriot (2), Tri-Valley (2), Merrimack Valley, Catholic, Northeastern, Boston City, Cape Ann, Mayflower, Dual Valley, and Inter High. Patriots hiring Thomas Brown as TEs coach, passing game coordinator The Chicago Bears have found their new head coach in Ben Johnson, who is busy assembling his coaching staff. Now, former Bears interim head coach Thomas Brown has found a new home. According to Mass Live's Mark Daniels, the New England Patriots are hiring Brown as their new tight ends coach and passing game coordinator. Brown started this season as passing game coordinator before he was promoted to offensive coordinator following Shane Waldron's firing on Nov. 12. Brown helped kickstart Chicago's offense and quarterback Caleb Williams with three impressive outings against division foes Green Bay, Minnesota and Detroit (despite them all being losses). When Eberflus was fired after a Thanksgiving disaster against the Lions, Brown was promoted to interim head coach. Unfortunately, Brown struggled to rein in a Bears team that was in the middle of a six-game losing streak after a 4-2 start. Brown went 1-4 in his interim head coach tenure. Now, Brown gets a fresh start with the Patriots under new head coach Mike Vrabel, where the hope is he'll eventually get an opportunity as offensive coordinator.

Former interim head coach joining Patriots' growing coaching staff
The New England Patriots are hiring former Chicago Bears interim head coach and offensive coordinator Thomas Brown to be their tight ends coach and pass game coordinator, per Tom Pelissero. Brown was interviewed by the Patriots earlier this month for their offensive coordinator position, but Josh McDaniels ultimately won the job. However, that still didn't stop the team from pursuing Brown for a coaching job. Brown was the pass game coordinator for the Chicago Bears to begin the 2024 season. He was promoted to offensive coordinator after Shane Waldron was fired. He then received another promotion after Matt Eberflus was fired to become the interim head coach. This is yet another significant offensive hiring for a Patriots team hoping to improve in that area. They also reportedly added former Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Doug Marrone to their staff as well. It's clear that New England wants to establish a solid group of offensive coaches, and things appear to be coming together exceptionally well. Thomas Brown, Patriots reportedly discussing role on offensive coaching staff
FOXBORO -- The New England Patriots interviewed Thomas Brown for their offensive coordinator position before ultimately going back to Josh MCDaniels for a third time. But there could still be a spot for Brown on Mike Vrabel's coaching staff. The Patriots and Brown are reportedly still discussing a role for him on McDaniels' offense, according to ESPN Boston's Mike Reiss. "The Patriots had interviewed interim Chicago Bears head coach Thomas Brown for their offensive coordinator job that ultimately went to McDaniels, but Brown is still in talks with the team to potentially join the staff in a different role, according to league sources," Reiss reported in his Sunday notes column. Who is Thomas Brown? Brown, 38, is coming off an interesting year with the Chicago Bears. He was hired ahead of the season to be the team's pass game coordinator, but was promoted to the team's offensive coordinator when Shane Waldron was fired on Nov. 12. He was only in that position for a few weeks, as he was promoted again to head coach when Matt Eberflus was fired on Nov. 29 after a 4-8 start o the season. Brown was 1-4 as head coach of the Bears, and earned his only win in Week 18 over the Green Bay Packers. Prior to joining the Bears, Brown was the offensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers in 2023. The Panthers and the Patriots were tied for last in the NFL at 13.9 points per game in 2023. Brown was on Sean McVay's staff with the Los Angeles Rams from 2020-2022 as a running backs coach, tight ends coach, and assistant head coach. He was both a running backs coach and assistant head coach when the Rams won Super Bowl LVI over the Cincinnati Bengals at the end of the 2021 season. Before breaking into the NFL with the Rams, Brown spent nearly a decade as a college coach at Georgia, Chattanooga, Marshall, Wisconsin, Miami, and South Carolina. Brown also played three seasons in the NFL as a running back for the Atlanta Falcons and Cleveland Browns, though he never saw any action in a game. Brown could potentially become the pass game coordinator or running backs coach in New England. Mike Vrabel's Patriots coaching staff Vrabel has filled his three coordinator positions in New England, as was announced by the team last week: Offensive coordinator: Josh McDaniels Defensive coordinator: Terrell Williams Special teams coordinator: Jeremy Springer Former Browns coach Ashton Grant was reportedly brought in to be New England's new quarterbacks coach, while Tony Dews and Riley Larkin were also reportedly added to the offensive staff in unspecified roles. The Patriots have not yet confirmed or announced those hirings. Zak Kuhr, Clinton McMillan, and Kevin Richardson have reportedly joined Vrabel's defensive staff under Williams, though those have not been announced by the team yet either.
