Homer schools forced into virtual learning over staffing issues
HOMER, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — The weather isn't what's keeping students in Homer home today.
The Homer Central School District is experiencing a surplus of staffing outages, which is forcing schools to switch to remote learning.
In a letter sent to the school community yesterday, the superintendent, Thomas Turck shared that several staff members were out due to illness. This is causing a shortage in the transportation department, which according to the superintendent, was nearly the reason the school was cancelled yesterday.
Since the district is virtual today, practices for all activities will be canceled as well as any modified games.
All JV and varsity games on the schedule tonight will still be played.
If the district stays virtual for the rest of the week — those changes will stay in place. As for the junior high's performance of 'The Little Mermaid' later this week, the show will still go on at night even if students learn from home during the day.
The following instructions have been given to parents regarding the foreseeable future:
Until further notice, students in grades 3-12 will take home their Chromebooks each night and have access to instructional materials via Google Classroom.
Students in Pre-K-2 will have packets of work available for at-home learning.
If a virtual learning day due to staffing shortages occurs, all practices for all activities will be canceled as will modified sports. JV and Varsity games, concerts, plays, etc. will go on as planned.
If a virtual learning day is declared for tomorrow (2/4/25), instructional materials will be available at the following times:Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
