Meta Adds Threads Feed Ads to its Marketing API
This story was originally published on Social Media Today. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Social Media Today newsletter. With Meta recently opening up Threads ads to all advertisers, it's now also expanding its Marketing API to support the same, which will enable third-party platforms to facilitate the creation of Threads ads, expanding the usage of the option. Which, to be clear, won't mean a lot for users, as there are already set Threads feed placements and intervals. But it will make it a lot easier for social media management platforms and ad networks to offer Threads ads within their tools. As per Meta: 'On May 19, 2025, we're expanding Marketing API support to include ads in Threads. Ads in Threads can help you extend your existing ad campaigns to the growing community on Threads.' The 'Threads feed' placement will provide another way for advertisers to expand their campaigns, using existing ad and image assets. 'Ads in Threads feed will appear between organic content in the Threads home feed. Available objectives include Reach, Traffic, and Website Conversions. We're also integrating Meta's brand safety and suitability standards from the start to give advertisers confidence in where their ads appear.' As with the general Threads ads offering, Threads feed ads via the API will be available for the Reach, Traffic, and Website Conversions objectives. Advertisers will, however, require a Threads profile in order to run ads on Threads: 'Before you begin, your app user must grant your app permission to read an Instagram-connected Threads account profile's info and media.' Threads feed ads also won't be available in isolation, with Threads promotions available via the broader Meta 'Feeds' placement grouping. Meta says that, at a minimum, Instagram feed will also have to be selected when running Threads ads. Threads feed will support single image ads with aspect ratios from 16:9 to 9:16 (taller ratios will be center cropped). Meta also notes that third-party comment moderation is not supported for ads in Threads at this time. It's a handy expansion of the new Threads ads offering, which will provide more capacity to get your ads in front of Threads' 350 million users. And with 75% of Threads profiles following at least one business, there does seem to be some potential there, for those brands with the right approach. Threads now lets creators add up to 5 links to profiles, track clicks
Instagram Threads is taking on Linktree and other 'link-in-bio' solutions by introducing a way for creators to use their Threads profile to share links to their other interests and online presences. At launch, the feature will support adding up to five links to a bio, which can connect visitors to the creator's blog, newsletter, website, or other social profiles, for example. In addition, creators will be able to access new tools to see how well those links perform. The Meta-owned social app, which now has over 350 million monthly active users, is positioning the feature as an alternative to its competitor X. However, Threads' ability to point users to a host of other social and web profiles from links easily accessed from within a creator's bio is something that could eat into the business of services like Linktree, Beacons, Koji, and others that offer tools that allow creators to build a landing page for multiple links. These services initially emerged because social media apps only offered one place to add a URL to a bio, and creators needed a way to direct their fans to everything else they published online, including their posts on other social networks as well as their own websites or storefronts. With the update, Threads will provide creators with insights that allow them to see how many people have visited the links in their profile as well as any links shared in their posts. The company explained that the idea is to make Threads a place where creators can grow their reach, even if that means helping creators promote a presence that's outside Meta's app. In addition, Meta says it will soon launch a weekly recap feature for Insights that offers a summarized snapshot of the past week, including a week-over-week comparison of the number of posts they've shared, total views, new follower counts, and replies on their posts. These recaps will also include other personalized tips to help creators learn how to better engage their community.

An internal Meta planning deck reveals its early strategy for Threads, code-named Project 92
An internal Meta deck reveals the company's original plans for its text-based platform Threads, and how it would compete with X, formerly Twitter. The deck was revealed in court this month during the Federal Trade Commission's antitrust trial against Meta. Meta officially launched Threads in 2023, and 10 million users signed up in its first seven hours, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said. Internally, Meta employees pitched Threads as a better Twitter. "Twitter is experiencing instability and may continue to falter, though its network is strong and established," the deck said. Threads' initial goal was to "build the most engaging online space for public conversation, enabling people to talk about their interests, come together over cultural moments, and connect directly with creators," according to the deck. The launch strategy for Threads, code-named Project 92, or P92, included: Using what Meta has learned about social media from its other platforms to create a foundation for users, including sharing best practices for using the platform with users on day one. Using Instagram as a funnel to direct users to sign up. At its launch, users could sign into Threads with their existing Instagram logins. Introducing innovative features like a Mastodon integration and other tools that could make posting "fresh and fun." Targeting Instagram creators to create conversation that's less news and politics-focused content than what can already be found on X. Meta did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.

Film so 'horrific' no one could watch it for 20 years now on BBC
The BBC film, Threads, first aired in 1984 and has since been banned from screens due to its graphic content. Now, over forty years on from its release, the film is available on BBC iPlayer This 'horrific' film shocked audiences when it premiered on BBC2 in 1984 before vanishing for decades. Threads is a harrowing apocalyptic war drama that explores the grim aftermath of a nuclear attack on Britain. The "realistic" portrayal of its medical, economic, and environmental fallout stunned viewers, who find the fiction eerily close to potential reality now more than ever. Penned by Barry Hines and helmed by Mick Jackson, this war flick lays bare the heartbreak of surviving families in Sheffield following a Soviet nuclear onslaught. The depicted catastrophic effects show a UK ravaged, with millions dead or injured in the wake of the disaster. One fan said: "I first saw this when it came out – the public were often still fairly innocent about the bomb, and of course the Berlin Wall still existed, a symbol of issues with Russia. 40 years and many disaster films later, all with special effects and everything, and this old TV film still hits extremely hard." The viewer emphasised how Threads' attention to "normal people" renders it "absolutely horrific". They added: "It's hard watching, but it does what it means to do – underlines that there are no winners in nuclear war. Fantastic film which still holds its own, if extremely depressing. Bring a tissue or two.", reports the Express. What sets this film apart from other war flicks of its era is its focus on the ordinary folks caught in the chaos rather than glorifying combatants. "Threads" delves into the aftermath of conflict, portraying the struggle of civilians attempting to resume their normal lives amidst the ruins and having stared death in the face. The chilling impact of "Threads" continues to resonate, earning it a reputation as a "unique" gem in British cinematic history. It even sparked the imaginations of future storytellers, such as Charlie Brooker, the mastermind behind " Black Mirror." Charlie Brooker reflected on his pivotal encounter with "Threads" at the tender age of 13 during an episode of "Desert Island Discs" in 2018. He said: "I remember watching Threads and not being able to process what that meant, not understanding how society kept going... While the world has changed in so many ways since Threads was first broadcast, it retains its harrowing power." Despite a period of prohibition, "Threads" garnered critical acclaim, securing seven BAFTA Award nominations and clinching four, including Best Single Drama and Best Design. It's the deliberate artistic choices by the filmmakers that audiences credit for the film's "realistic and horrifying" experience. One review said: "It is bleak to its very final frame and is something I can understand most viewers only watch once. Very well made and a powerful message." Another comment read: "Though I do debate the accuracy of some of its claims, this is an important film for multiple generations to see." More than four decades after its release, amid escalating global tension, movie buffs are encouraging folks to watch Threads, currently available on BBC iPlayer.
