Native Centre marks Indigenous History Month with talks of restoring totem pole

As Canadians take time this month to recognize Indigenous history, the Niagara Regional Native Centre is moving ahead with plans to restore the 25-foot totem pole that has stood outside its Niagara-on-the-Lake building since 1988. 'It is in dire need of restoration right now,' said Halley Irwin, director of development and community engagement. The Thunderbird totem pole, carved by Chief Mathias Joe of the Squamish Nation in Vancouver, was commissioned by Davis Lumber in St. Catharines in 1955 as a piece of art to promote the company's ties to Western Canada. At that time, it was billed as the largest totem pole east of the Rockies, said Irwin. Approximately 25 feet high with a 14-foot wingspan, the pole was moved to the centre in 1988 after the lumber company closed. But after spending the last 70 years outdoors, the totem pole is in desperate need of restoration, Irwin said. 'It should be a solid piece of wood and we know that there are definitely some hollow spots in it right now,' she said. 'We currently know that there are a family of squirrels living in it.' Irwin said the centre is hoping to start restoration this year in late summer to early fall. 'It'll likely be a two or three-week process,' she said. A campaign to raise funds for the project, which will cost more than $150,000, is expected to launch a few weeks before restoration starts. Now in its 53rd year, the centre has grown into a key hub for more than 2,000 Indigenous people across the Niagara region. National Indigenous History Month takes place in June and honours the history, contributions and strength of First Nation, Inuit and Métis people. National Indigenous Peoples Day is June 21. With Six Nations of the Grand River Reserve and Mississaugas of the Credit Reserve located about 100 kilometres away, the Niagara centre fills a vital role, Irwin said. 'It's important to have a gathering place for urban Indigenous people,' she said. And since 65 per cent of registered Indigenous people live off-reserve, Irwin said having a local space for community and cultural connection is essential. The centre services First Nations, Inuit and Métis people in NOTL, St. Catharines, Thorold, Niagara Falls, Welland, Lincoln, West Lincoln, Pelham and Grimsby — offering 27 largely social-service-based programs, as well as public and private events, Irwin said. It's been around since 1972 and moved to its current location on Airport Road in the '80s. Its aims include supporting cultural and social interests, addressing social and economic challenges, fostering Indigenous leadership and building understanding between Indigenous people and others in the community. Totem poles are not traditional to Indigenous peoples who historically resided in Treaty 381 (Niagara Purchase), which covers NOTL, Irwin said. 'It's definitely important to recognize that it is not part of our traditions — yet something that we still honour,' she said. The centre has come full circle since its beginnings, Irwin said, and is still working to grow sustainably, be economically independent and self-sufficient. The centre is now firmly established as a vital resource for Niagara and remains focused on adapting to the changing needs of the Indigenous community, she said. It also continues to bring people together, like through its August BBQ, November Toonie Auction, January New Year social and regular drum nights and socials throughout the year. Next up for the centre: A spring celebration this Friday, June 6 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It will feature hands-on activities, food and community connection — rain or shine. Thunderbird Restaurant closes after 6 decades

After serving breakfasts and burgers for 64 years, Thunderbird Restaurant has shuttered amid a legal battle between the City of Winnipeg and the building's owner. Sunday marked the iconic eatery's last day in business, according to a message posted on the front door of 1970 McPhillips St. 'It is with a heavy heart that we announce the closing of the Thunderbird Restaurant,' the note reads. 'This journey has been incredible and we're immensely grateful for the support of our customers, employees and partners. Thank you for being a part of our story. We appreciate everything and we miss you.' MIKAELA MACKENZIE / FREE PRESS The Thunderbird Restaurant (1970 McPhillips St.) had dished out meals since 1961. Long recognizable for its towering, yellow-and-red, T-shaped signage, the Thunderbird was opened in 1961 (one of two such named drive-ins in the city) by brothers John, Jimmy and Perry Ginakes. John operated the McPhillips Street diner with his wife, Gloria, for decades. He was known for his signature Thunderburger, Greek salads and breakfast spreads. When he retired, he leased the space to tenants in 2013 to continue the restaurant's legacy. The family kept possession of the building, which is now managed by Niata Enterprises, owned by Peter Ginakes. 'It's unique because there's only a handful of restaurants in the city that have operated that long and, obviously, if you've operated for that long as an independent, you've been doing something right,' Peter Ginakes said on Wednesday. Terance Gyselinck, manager of Riverside Greenhouses, which neighbours the restaurant, had visited the eatery for more than 20 years. He wasn't surprised it had closed down, but said it's a bittersweet result. Whenever he went in, Gyselinck would always order the breakfast special. 'It always takes you back to the past. It's a very nostalgic place with a '60s and '70s feel,' Gyselinck said. 'I got to know the owners, and they were very nice, hard-working people. I wish them the best.' The restaurant tenants had unsuccessfully tried to sell the business for multiple years because they wanted to retire, said Peter Ginakes. An online real estate listing showed the restaurant had been posted for nearly 700 days, with an asking price of $169,900. Ginakes said he's optimistic he'll find new tenants to get the restaurant back up and running, but admits an ongoing legal battle has made it difficult. Niata Enterprises has been fighting with the City of Winnipeg to hand over all its records on the plans and approvals originally given for the restaurant and parking lot variances — and, if not found, explain why the sought-after documents don't exist. The issue was triggered by a plan to build a Starbucks coffee drive-thru on the FreshCo grocery store parking lot, neighbouring the Thunderbird. The proposal will eat up the remaining parking lot space the restaurant has, Ginakes said. 'You've got six stalls of parking for an 80-seat restaurant. That's not enough parking for even the staff to be there.' For decades, Thunderbird customers parked in the neighbouring supermarket lot under the terms of an easement agreement the City of Winnipeg has said doesn't exist, he said. Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. After years of legal wrangling, Niata Enterprises filed a notice of application in September 2023 with the Court of King's Bench for the city to produce the documents. A month later, the city filed a motion to strike down the application, calling it an abuse of process and saying it was 'too difficult or impossible to respond to,' court papers show. In a May 20 decision, King's Bench Justice Theodor Bock dismissed the city's motion to strike down an application to search for the documents. Bock described Niata Enterprises's application as 'bold' and not abuse of the process. 'Mere boldness is not a basis on which to strike a pleading,' said Bock.

Mustang Energy Corp. Enters Option Agreements with Thunderbird Resources Ltd.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, June 04, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Mustang Energy Corp. (CSE:MEC, OTC:MECPF, FRA:92T) ('Mustang' or the 'Company') is excited to announce that it has entered into two strategic option agreements with Thunderbird Resources Ltd. ('Thunderbird') to acquire an undivided 80% interest in certain mineral tenements held by Thunderbird located in the Athabasca Basin of Northern Saskatchewan (the 'Project'). The Option marks an important step for Mustang as it continues to expand and build its land package in this promising uranium district. The Company entered into an option agreement (the 'Cluff Lake Agreement') with Thunderbird, dated June 3, 2025, to acquire an undivided 80% interest (the 'Cluff Lake Option') in certain mineral tenements held by Thunderbird in and around Cluff Lake (the 'Cluff Lake Project'). Concurrently with the Cluff Lake Agreement, the Company entered into a second option agreement (the 'Surprise Creek Agreement', and together with the Cluff Lake Agreement, the 'Agreements') with Thunderbird, dated June 3, 2025, to acquire an undivided 80% interest (the 'Surprise Creek Option', and together with the Cluff Lake Option, the 'Option') in certain mineral tenements held by Thunderbird in and around Surprise Creek, Pring Lake, and Ellis Bay/Bob Lake (the 'Surprise Creek Project'). 'We are excited to partner with Thunderbird Resources on the Cluff Lake North and Surprise Creek Projects. This agreement advances Mustang's Athabasca Basin strategy. With a strong foundation in place through targeted claim staking and acquiring early-stage projects, we're now focused on advancing high-priority, drill-ready assets. Our technical team is developing plans for field programs at Cluff Lake North and Surprise Creek Projects to refine drill targets and evaluate underexplored structural corridors with strong discovery potential,' said Nicholas Luksha, CEO of Mustang Energy Corp. Cluff Lake North Uranium Project The Cluff Lake Project comprises a group of five mineral claims located in a highly prospective area around 12km north-east of the historical Cluff Lake uranium mine on the western flank of Canada's world-class Athabasca 1: Cluff Lake North Project Overview5 Thunderbird completed a MobileMT survey in 2024 which delineated several basement conductors in the Moose Lake area of the project, which are potential pathways for uranium mineralising fluids (see ASX: THB announcement dated 17th October 2024 titled 'Multiple Uranium targets identified by detailed EM surveys at Cluff Lake Project'). In the Moose Lake area, three high-priority drill target areas were defined by the MobileMT survey, one of which is coincident with a previously defined gravity/EM target. These targets are located within an interpreted structural corridor which extends north-northeast from the Cluff Lake Uranium deposits. The targets (ML-01, -02, -03) in this area are both basement-hosted, similar to the Cluff Lake deposits, and unconformity-related (see Figure 2).5Figure 2. Cluff Lake North – Moose Lake area – MobileMT and gravity/EM targets5 Surprise Creek Uranium-Copper Project The Surprise Creek Project is located 25km north-west of the Beaverlodge Uranium District, which hosts the historical uranium mines of Gunnar and Eldorado (Ace-Fay-Verna) and is located just north of the Athabasca Basin. A major high-resolution airborne magnetic, radiometric and VLF-EM survey completed by the Thunderbird in September 2024 identified multiple new uranium targets (see THB:ASX announcement dated 19 December 2024 titled 'Exploration to commence at Rockvale Antimony-Gold Project'). A strong uranium radiometric anomaly has been identified at the previously defined Surprise Creek Fault drill target, where historical drilling returned results of up to 2.1m @ 4.37% U3O8 from 57m1, 6 and surface sampling by Thunderbird returned assays up to 7.98% U3O8.2 The area of surface uranium mineralisation extends over a strike length of up to 500m2 (see Figure 3).1, 2, 6 A work permit application for exploration including drilling at the Surprise Creek Fault prospect has recently been approved by the Saskatchewan 3 – Surprise Creek Project – Surprise Creek Fault prospect1, 2, 6 Many of the radiometric targets identified in the airborne survey show a strong spatial correlation with the contact between the Archean Zemlak Domain basement rocks and the overlying younger Palaeoproterozoic aged Thluicho Lake Group, where cross-cutting structures intersect the contact. In addition, many of the historical copper prospects (Bob Lake, Ellis Bay, Waterloo South) are also associated with the same contact (see Figure 4). Historical drilling results from Bob Lake and Ellis Bay include: 9.1m @ 2.07% Cu and 27.3g/t Ag from surface (Bob Lake)3 6.6m @ 1.31% Cu from 11m (Ellis Bay)3 Rock chip sampling of historical copper occurrences completed by Thunderbird in 2022 and 2023 returned assays up 61.7% Cu, 27.6% Cu and 9% Cu.2,4Figure 4 – Surprise Creek Project – copper results from historical drilling3, 4, 6, 7 References ASX:THB announcement dated 6th July 2022 titled 'Surprise Creek data review highlights high-grade targets'2 ASX:THB announcement dated 22 December 2022 titled 'High-grade Uranium rock chip results at Surprise Creek'3 ASX:THB announcement dated 13th February 2023 titled 'Exciting Copper Targets at Surprise Creek'4 ASX:THB announcement dated 13th October 2022 titled 'Exceptional Uranium and Copper Rock chip results'5 Saskatchewan Mineral Deposits Index, Trench OHT-1 (U-Pb), SMDI# 2068, Retrieved from Saskatchewan Mineral Assessment Database Drill hole VT20, SMAD# 74N10-0368, Retrieved from Saskatchewan Mineral Assessment Database, SMAD# 74N11-0063, Retrieved from Cluff Lake Option Pursuant to the Cluff Lake Agreement, Mustang can acquire an 80% interest in the Cluff Lake Project, which spans a total of 13,977 hectares, by satisfying the following conditions: Share Issuance: Mustang will issue common shares (each, a 'Share') with a total value of CAD$200,000. Air Force Elite: Thunderbirds Dives Into the Intense Ups and Downs of Life As a High-Skilled Pilot

On May 23, a documentary about elite Air Force pilots will take flight. Air Force Elite: Thunderbirds on Netflix profiles some of the most skilled combat pilots in the U.S. Air Force as they train for high-speed aviation demonstrations nationwide that are designed to promote a positive image of the military branch. President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama are Executive Producers of the doc. More than 135 people comprise the Thunderbird team, and they take part in 65-75 shows over 210 days per year. Interest is soaring; applications to join the team have tripled since 2020. While the Air Force would obviously love it if people saw these air shows and decided to sign up, the Thunderbirds featured in the doc believe the goal of the shows is to inspire people to reach new heights in any aspect of their lives. 'I always thought that if you could shape this team right, you would create a culture that inspires everyone in this country and beyond to do extraordinary things for the right reasons,' Lieutenant Colonel Justin 'Astro' Elliott, the boss of the Thunderbirds, says in the doc. Filmmakers embedded with the 2023 Thunderbirds team, following them from training in the Nevada desert to shows across the country. Here's a look at the life lessons the Thunderbirds have learned from their work that can apply to any job or life stage. How a Thunderbird pilot explains his job to his family In the doc, Elliott, known as 'Thunderbird 1' to his crew, has 60 days to prepare his team for 62 air shows—what he calls '45 minutes of total chaos.' Elliott always wanted to be an astronaut when he grew up. But midway through the application process, he got asked to be the boss of the Thunderbirds and felt like he couldn't pass up such a great opportunity. In addition to shadowing him on the job, filmmakers got to follow Elliott at home with his two young boys, Declan and Revan. One day, while seeing him off to work, his wife Victoria gives her husband a big hug and says 'don't die.' That's her number one rule for him. The work is risky, but Elliott says, 'It's important for our kids to see us set objectives and go after things in the name of service to something bigger than ourselves.' What keeps Thunderbird pilots going Thunderbird Eric 'Miami' Tise talks about the need for speed. 'We're always under a little bit of the 'I'm gonna die' factor, but that keeps your adrenaline running and really focused,' Tise explains. Even ejecting from the aircraft can be dangerous and traumatic. Tise lost an inch of height after ejecting from a plane one time. His muscles shrunk after the ejections, and will calcify, leading to muscle knotting in his back. Some of the Thunderbird pilots flying high had to overcome serious obstacles on the ground. Zachary 'Zeke' Taylor opens up about his father, who was addicted to drugs. He recalls being a freshman in high school watching his dad get checked into rehab on Christmas Day. That's when Zeke says he realized, 'I do not want this for myself.' His grandfather stepped in as a father figure and told him that every time he flies, he should look out towards the right wing of the plane, and he'll be there flying beside him in spirit. Taylor chokes up as he recalls that memory and says from now on, 'Every time I climb up the ladder, I look out on my right wing and say, 'Hey, grandpa, hang on. It's gonna be a hell of a ride.'' As Zeke greets young children who have come to see an air show, he can be heard saying, 'I'm a trailer park kid from Florida…You can overcome anything in life, and I'm just living proof of that.' Why a fallen Thunderbird's mom has no regrets The dangers of flying such complex formations are top of mind for crew members. They are haunted by a 1982 crash, in which four planes nosedived into the ground at a speed of about 400 miles per hour, killing the pilots onboard. The doc features moving interviews with the parents of Stephen 'Cajun' Del Bagno, who died in 2018 in the last fatal accident involving a Thunderbird pilot. The 34-year-old crashed during a routine training flight after losing consciousness in the cockpit. His parents say in the film that he always wanted to be a pilot. Even his first word was airplane. His dad Joe plays golf with his son's clubs, just so he can feel like he's playing with him. Del Bagno's parents say they wholeheartedly supported Cajun's dangerous job because they knew he was living his dream, arguing that taking risks is just a part of life. As Cajun's mother Cindy says, 'If you're afraid to put yourself out there, to take risks in life, you're going to end up doing nothing.'
