Marshall walks-off No. 13 WVU to avoid a season sweep by Mountaineers
MORGANTOWN — Chase Swain had to charge hard on the dribbler hit down the third base line and his quick and off-balanced throw to first sailed high and wide of teammate Grant Hussey. A.J. Havrilla scored and Marshall walked-off No. 13 West Virginia on Wednesday night with a 7-6 victory inside GoMart Ballpark in Charleston. BOX SCORE Well, there wasn't much walking off. Instead, Thundering Herd players rushed the field, chasing after Tyler Kamerer, who had hit the slow roller to third base. The Mountaineers (37-6), meanwhile, were left to ponder if this was simply an upset loss or a sign of things to come. WVU is now 0-2 in its last two midweek games. Both were one-run defeats to Penn State and Marshall (24-22), neither were expected. The Mountaineers will entertain Texas Tech for a three-game series that begins at 6:30 p.m. Friday inside Kendrick Family Ballpark. Maybe getting back to Big 12 play will get the Mountaineers back in their comfort zone, but they still have something to prove there, too. WVU is coming off a three-game sweep of UCF, but one of those wins came after recording only one hit. Another came after giving up 10 runs and the third was by a slim 4-3 margin against the 12th-place team in the Big 12 standings. As for the Thundering Herd, they avoided a season sweep with the victory. Relief pitcher Charlie Krebs was the difference. In a 6-6 game, Krebs came in with two WVU runners on and no outs in the seventh inning. He induced a double play and a groundout to get out of the inning and then pitched perfect 1-2-3 innings in the eighth and ninth innings. Marshall's magic in the final inning began with Havrilla drawing a four-pitch walk with one out. Eddie Leon singled to right field, which set up Kamerer. All of it came against WVU reliever Chase Meyer, who came in for the ninth inning hoping to send the game into extra innings. Instead, he was charged with just his second loss of the season. WVU took an early 2-0 lead when Kyle West's double scored Skylar King and then Jace Rineart reached on a throwing error that scored West. In the bottom of the first, Havrilla hit a solo home run to deep center and that was it for WVU starter Gavin Van Kempen. He got out of the rest of the inning unscathed, but Mac Stiffler came in for the second inning. Marshall took a 4-3 lead in the fourth inning, highlighted by Jackson Golden's two-run home run off Stiffler. West hit a solo home run in the fifth to tie the game and the Mountaineers took a 6-4 lead in the sixth, after Hussey drove in Sam White with a base hit and Brodie Kresser picked up an RBI on a groundout that scored Rineart. Marshall tied the game off WVU reliever Reese Bassinger in the bottom of the sixth. Golden drove in two with a base hit, giving him four RBIs in the game as the Thundering Herd's No. 9 hitter. West finished with three hits and two RBIs for the Mountaineers and King and White each had two hits. Carson Estridge pitched 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief and former Bridgeport star Ben McDougal got WVU out of the eighth inning with a strikeout and a lineout.

Marshall won't renew contract of AD Christian Spears, will start search for replacement
HUNTINGTON, — Marshall will not renew the contract of athletic director Christian Spears when it expires next year, the school announced Tuesday. Marshall said the decision was mutual and it will begin an immediate search for a replacement for Spears, who was hired in February 2022. 'It has been my honor to serve this incredible university,' Spears said in a statement. Spears guided Marshall's transition from Conference USA to the Sun Belt Conference in 2022. 'We are grateful for Christian's passionate leadership and substantial contributions to Marshall Athletics,' Marshall President Brad Smith said in a statement. 'From championship seasons to key facility upgrades, Christian is leaving the athletic department in a strong position. We wish him continued success in his next venture.' The Thundering Herd won the Sun Belt football championship last December. The next day, football coach Charles Huff departed for Sun Belt rival Southern Miss. Dozens of players then entered the transfer portal, prompting Marshall to opt out of playing in the Independence Bowl. The Sun Belt fined Marshall $100,000 for the decision, which Spears had said was done 'for all the right reasons.' Huff's four-year contract at Marshall was up after the 2024 season and there had been no agreement on a new deal. Spears has said Huff entertained coaching offers at other schools while at Marshall and that Spears wanted someone who 'truly wants to be at Marshall.' Less than an hour after Huff's hiring at Southern Miss was announced, Marshall named Tony Gibson as its football coach. Gibson had signed a memorandum of understanding at Marshall five days before Huff's departure. Among other coaches hired by Spears was women's basketball coach Kim Caldwell, who led the Thundering Herd to the NCAA Tournament in her only season before leaving for Tennessee.

Were you tricked by these West Virginia April Fools pranks?
CLARKSBURG, (WBOY) — April Fools Day is everyone's favorite or least favorite holiday depending on who you ask, when family members, that one friend, and often businesses or other organizations compete to see who can confound the most people online. While some April Fools pranks are more believable than others, here's a list of some of the notable ones from around West Virginia this year: On Tuesday, the Thundering Herd said it was rebranding to the far more intimidating 'Thundering Squirrels,' sharing several images with the 'new' logo on Facebook. The post showed the new squirrel logo on t-shirts, football jerseys and on the school's basketball court, baseball diamond and football field. The mockup images received a fairly positive reception, with one person commenting, 'I wouldn't even be mad at this,' and others expressing their respect and appreciation for the squirrels around campus. Monongalia County Parks & Recreation posted that it had purchased Cheat Lake outside of Morgantown so it could convert the area into 'one of the LARGEST water parks in West Virginia! 🌊🎢💦.' Monongalia Parks and Rec was at least gracious enough to disclose the announcement as a prank in the post, but even though Cheat Lake isn't getting a makeover doesn't mean you can't check out the water park shown on Facebook. The picture posted is a real aquatic obstacle course at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park: Keystone Lake. Happy's Place, a popular student bar in downtown Morgantown, said in an Instagram post that Tuesday, April 1 would be its last day of business. The announcement was made Monday evening on March 31, causing some to believe the bar could be going away for real. Happy's invited patrons to celebrate the bar's 'funeral,' but put students' fears to rest on Tuesday night and confirmed the announced closure was indeed, just a prank. The Empire Bank building in downtown Clarksburg, also known as Empire 1907, is currently undergoing renovations for a variety of planned projects. But on April 1, the building jokingly announced that it would be ditching its future plans for a brand new Dollar General store. Whether you think the area needs another Dollar General or not is for you to decide, but the Empire Building on W Main Street certainly won't be the next. Gas prices spike in West Virginia; are tariffs to blame? Morgantown's cryptid-themed mini golf course also joined in on the April Fools fun, announcing the indoor course would be remodelling itself into 'something much needed in West Virginia and Morgantown…a new Hotspot location!' Cryptid Mountain also shared several spoof images of its interior reimagined as the 'World's only Mothman casino,' but fans of the course should be relieved to know that the only cryptid-themed mini golf course in north central West Virginia will remain as is.
