Man dead, woman injured after possibly inhaling pool chemical fumes in Blainville
A man is dead and a woman is in hospital after potentially having inhaled fumes from their backyard swimming pool in a suburb on Montreal's North Shore.
Thérèse-De Blainville police (RIPTB) say neighbours called 911 around 10 p.m. Friday about two people experiencing health problems.
Police and paramedics were dispatched to the residence on Carré Hotte Street, where they found the two unconscious by the empty pool.
Officers noticed that chemicals used to repair the pool lining could have caused the medical emergency, according to chief inspector Karine Desaulniers.
First responders tried to resuscitate both people who were then brought to hospital. The man, 48, was declared dead about an hour later, around 11:30 p.m.
The woman, 50, is in stable condition.
Some officers were also affected by the chemical fumes and were briefly treated in hospital before being released.
Neighbouring residences were evacuated as a precaution. Residents have all returned home as of Saturday morning.
The file has been transferred to the coroner's office and the investigation is ongoing. They have yet to determine which chemical products caused the death.
Police say there is no suspicion of criminal activity.
