Niger Accuses France of Destabilizing Sahel Region
Israa Farhan Nigerien President Abdourahamane Tiani has accused France and other Western powers of orchestrating indirect efforts to destabilize the Sahel Confederation through covert intelligence operations and the support of armed groups. Speaking in a four-hour televised interview with national broadcaster RTN, President Tiani claimed that a broad international conspiracy is at play. He alleged the involvement of foreign intelligence agencies, international actors, and neighboring states in an attempt to undermine the emerging Sahel Confederation, which includes Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso. Tiani identified two alleged French intelligence units operating in the region. The first, he claimed, was established following the July 26, 2023 coup and is led by Jean-Marie Bockel, French President Emmanuel Macron's special envoy to Africa. This unit reportedly includes French military officers and aims to prevent the spread of the Sahelian political movement and to preserve France's military presence in the region. The second, dubbed the 'Élysée Sahel Cell,' was reportedly launched in September 2024 under the supervision of Christophe Guyot. According to Tiani, this unit consists of French foreign intelligence personnel, diplomats, and officials from the International Organization of La Francophonie. He named Jérémy Robert as the operational leader of the cell, which he accused of having "unlimited financial resources" dedicated to destabilizing the Sahel Confederation. The Nigerien president further alleged that a strategy of "terrorist resettlement" is being pursued in the border areas shared with Mali and Burkina Faso, supported by the redeployment of fighters from the Lake Chad basin. He accused Benin of allowing these armed groups to settle in its northern territories, a region he described as being under 'direct French influence.' Tiani also revealed the existence of a high-level meeting on 15 March 2025, which he claims brought together representatives of Western powers and armed groups such as Boko Haram and the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP). The aim of this alleged gathering, he said, was to launch an indirect war against the Sahelian states, beginning with Niger. Additionally, the president accused Nigeria of providing refuge and logistical support to French forces expelled from Niger. He pointed to two meetings held in Abuja on 25 January and 3 February 2025 as key moments in the coordination of what he described as a broader destabilization campaign. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia News Australia Fines Telegram $600,000 Over Terrorism, Child Abuse Content Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Sports Neymar Announced for Brazil's Preliminary List for 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers News Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly Inaugurates Two Indian Companies Arts & Culture New Archaeological Discovery from 26th Dynasty Uncovered in Karnak Temple Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War Arts & Culture Zahi Hawass: Claims of Columns Beneath the Pyramid of Khafre Are Lies News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks

Las Vegas resident leaves viewers terrified with haunting reality of what the edge of Sin City looks like at night
People have been left shocked by a hauntingly desolate and expansive view of the 'edge of Vegas at night' - after a resident shared the reality of living in the famous city. Tiani Shaye, who recently went viral for showing what the famous tourist destination looks like from over her backyard wall, has responded to commenters' requests to see the edge of Sin City at night time. In her latest TikTok, she walked down a tarmac road in the pitch black ahead of the big reveal. Then came footage of a row of homes - before panning around to reveal a completely pitch black desert. 'There's the houses and you can actually see the stars,' she said in the video. 'Super pretty. You can't see the stars in the middle of Vegas but you can see them out here.' After swinging the camera back around to face her Tiani said: 'And that's it, that's what it looks like.' In a previous TikTok, she revealed her inspiration for offering a glimpse into the little-seen perspectives on the Gambling Capital of the World. 'So I live on the edge of Vegas and I've seen a couple of TikToks of the airplane view of how Vegas just ends and it is kinda weird that it just ends,' she explained. 'So, I'm gonna show you what it looks like from the ground view.' Similarly to her video taken at night, Tiani started by showing a road lined on one side by houses before turning to reveal the far-reaching desert. While doing so she said: 'So, you got the houses here, right, and then it just goes.' She then zoomed into the distant mountains while saying: 'And that is the edge of Vegas. Pretty mountains over there.' The Nevada resident admitted that the design of the city could be perceived as slightly odd - but she likes it just as it is. 'It is kinda weird that it just ends but honestly I love living on the edge of Vegas,' she explained. 'It's quiet, it's peaceful, there's not a lot of commotion. I love that every single time I drive over here it just goes all the way out like that, it's beautiful.' Both the night and day time videos have received hundreds of comments with many people imaging what horrors could occur in such an isolated location. 'Think how many bodies are out there,' one offered, while another added, 'my toxic trait would convince me someone is watching me every night from nowhere.' Tiani responded to some practical questions in the comment section. One viewer asked: 'Ok, you have issues with snakes, scorpions or criminals? Also how far from 'town' (grocery stores/restaurants/movie theaters etc) are you?' 'Haven't seen any snakes,' she revealed. 'Not much crime here either and the closest grocery store is less than 10 min down the street haha still so convenient!' But despite her praise for the area Tiani did admit that they get visits from some desert creepy crawlies, adding that she has 'seen more spiders than scorpions'. Another viewer asked: 'Do you ever see people walking out there?' Tiani replied: 'Not really in this spot, haha. Mostly people just off-roading with their toys! But in other spots nearby you have a lot of hikers and mountain bikers.' Several viewers were shocked by the sudden end of Las Vegas and wondered what could be going on out in the open desert Despite some viewers expressing concern others said this would be their dream location to settle down. One person wrote: 'This is 100 per cent exactly where I want to live. Tell me about the cost of living please.' 'Am I the only one who thinks it looks peaceful and would be happy to live there,' a second questioned. Another added: 'It's beautiful. The desert at night and day are mesmerizing.' Tiani's video comes after several other Las Vegas residents have shared their backyard views of the desert. Crystal Wojtowich shared her own clip, in which she similarly opened up her back door to reveal a high brick wall surrounding her patio. After showing her backyard she then took the camera over the wall to reveal a barren desert behind. One person under Crystal's video likened the view to a horror movie - The Hills Have Eyes - which follows a family targeted by cannibalistic mutants when their car breaks down in the Nevada desert. Meanwhile, other viewers of the TikTok admitted that they'd prefer greenery in their garden, with one person writing: 'I absolutely couldn't do it. I need TREES and WATER.'

Niger junta frees ministers of overthrown government
Niger's junta said Tuesday it had freed around 50 people, including ministers from the government it toppled in July 2023, in line with recommendations of a "national conference" in February. Those freed include former ministers, a diplomat, a journalist and soldiers accused of a coup bid in 2010. However ousted former president Mohamed Bazoum is still in detention despite international calls for his release. "These individuals are being released in accordance with the recommendations of the National Forum for Reconstruction," the government's general secretariat said in a statement read on public television. Those released include former oil minister Mahamane Sani Issoufou, the son of ex-president Mahamadou Issoufou who was in power for a decade from 2011, ex-defence minister Kalla Moutari, former finance minister Ahmat Jidoud, and former energy minister Ibrahim Yacoubou. The president of the PNDS former ruling party, Foumakoye Gado, and journalist Ousmane Toudou are also among those freed along with Alat Mogaskia, former ambassador to Nigeria. They were arrested after the coup that brought to power General Abdourahamane Tiani, former head of the presidential guard, and were being held in various prisons, notably for "conspiracy to undermine the security and authority of the state". Similar charges are pending against former president Bazoum, whose immunity was lifted without a trial date being set. Soldiers previously convicted of coup bids or "endangering state security" were also released, including general Salou Souleymane, former chief of staff, and three other officers sentenced in 2018 to up to 15 years in prison for trying to overthrow president Issoufou in 2015. - 'Forgiveness' - The national conference held in February strengthened the ruling junta by authorising Tiani to remain in power in Niger for the next five years. "I wish to reiterate my commitment to always work for forgiveness and reconciliation among Nigeriens," junta leader Tiani declared after his inauguration as president last week. "The forgiveness and reconciliation we call for cannot conflict with the legitimate aspirations of Nigeriens for justice." Since coming to power, Niger's military rulers have severed relations with France and expelled French and American soldiers engaged in a battle against jihadists. They have also left organisations such as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). At the same time it has moved closer to its two neighbours, Burkina Faso and Mali, both governed by military leaders and facing the same deadly jihadist attacks. Together they have formed a group known as the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) and strengthened ties with Russia. Their three foreign ministers are expected in Moscow on Thursday and Friday for talks with their Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov. bh/ach/jfx/rsc

Niger's military to hold ‘national convention' on transition charter
NIAMEY: Niger's military regime will organize a 'national convention' from Feb. 15 to 19, notably intended to set the duration of the transition period that began with the 2023 overthrow of civilian President Mohamed Bazoum, the Interior Ministry said. The ministry unveiled the dates in a press release broadcast on state television, adding that the gathering would take place in the capital Niamey. In August 2023, shortly after taking power in a coup, General Abdourahamane Tiani announced the organization of an 'inclusive national dialogue' to outline the priority areas of governance and lay down the duration of the transition. At the time, he mentioned a maximum duration of three years, but he has not addressed the issue since. Early last year consultations were held across the country's eight regions to lay out a working basis for next week's meetings, with a national commission also created by presidential decree to oversee the work of the four-day conference set to produce a 'preliminary draft of the transition charter.' Following the gathering there will be a three-week period in which to draft a 'final report' to General Tiani. The commission, headed by Mamoudou Harouna Djingareye, a traditional leader, also comprises former ministers, academics, lawyers, soldiers, advisers to General Tiani, religious leaders and figures drawn from civil society. It is made up of five sub-committees whose themes are 'peace, security, national reconciliation and social cohesion,' 'political and institutional overhaul' and 'justice and human rights.' Niger is one of several countries in Africa's Sahel region where the military has seized power in coups in recent years, amid persistent attacks by insurgencies. A few days earlier, armed assailants in the country killed at least 10 soldiers in an ambush on a military unit that had been sent to hunt cattle rustlers in a border region near Burkina Faso. The military unit was deployed to catch criminals who had been stealing the cattle in the western village of Takzat, the military said in a statement broadcast Wednesday night. 'It was during the operation that a group of criminals ambushed the detachment of the internal security forces which resulted in the loss of 10 of our soldiers,' the statement said. It did not identify the attackers. The attackers managed to flee, but the military caught and neutralized 15 'terrorists' on Tuesday, the statement added. Niger, along with its neighbors Burkina Faso and Mali, has for over a decade battled an insurgency fought by militant groups, including some allied with Al-Qaeda and Daesh. Following military coups in all three nations in recent years, the ruling juntas have expelled French forces and turned to Russia's mercenary units for security assistance. The three countries have vowed to strengthen their cooperation by establishing a new security alliance, the Alliance of Sahel States. But the security situation in the Sahel, a vast region on the fringes of the Sahara Desert, has significantly worsened since the juntas took power, analysts say, with a record number of attacks and civilians killed both by militants and government forces.
