George Russell called out by Formula E driver Dan Ticktum in social media video

Formula E driver Dan Ticktum has swiped back after George Russell stated nobody else would copy Max Verstappen's deliberate collision in Spain – apart from 'one British driver in Formula E.' Russell and his car escaped unscathed after Verstappen rammed into the Mercedes in the closing stages of the Spanish GP on Sunday. Russell finished fourth, while Verstappen was demoted from fifth to tenth after receiving a 10-second time penalty. Advertisement Asked after the race if anybody else would drive deliberately into another car, 27-year-old Russell replied: 'Not in Formula 1. Maybe in Formula E. Yes, maybe there's one British driver in Formula E. But as I said, Max is one of the best in the world.' George Russell seemingly took a swipe at Dan Ticktum after the Spanish GP (Getty Images) With the clear implication that the racer in question was 25-year-old Ticktum, the Kiro Race driver responded on his Instagram story in amusing fashion late on Sunday. 'It has come to my attention, via the Twittersphere, that a certain driver in Formula One, not to name names, but his name is George Russell, has made some rather choice comments about a certain Formula E driver,' Ticktum said, after finishing 16th in the second Shanghai ePrix race on Sunday. Advertisement 'He hasn't named my name, but it's quite obviously pointed at me. I'd like to address those comments that he made. 'Number one, thank you for the free publicity. We'll take that any day of the week. 'And two, while what Max did today was a little bit sceptical, to be likened to him at any point in my career is positive, if you ask me. Goodbye.' Dan Ticktum has raced in Formula E since 2022 (Getty Images) Russell raced against Ticktum in karting, GP3 and Formula 2, before moving up to F1 in 2019 having won the F2 championship in 2018. Known for his outspoken manner in interviews and on team radio, Ticktum raced in F2 in 2018, 2020 and 2021, finishing fourth in his final season, before moving up to Formula E in 2022. World's ‘most controversial racing driver' responds to George Russell's sly dig

Formula E star Dan Ticktum has sent a message to Mercedes driver George Russell after he appeared to reference him at the Spanish Grand Prix following his clash with Max Verstappen Formula E star Dan Ticktum has hit back at George Russell following his veiled jibe after the Spanish Grand Prix. Mercedes driver Russell and Red Bull's Max Verstappen collided in the dying stages of the race in Barcelona on Sunday, but it was Russell's post-race remarks that turned Ticktum's head. The clash saw Verstappen incur a 10-second penalty, demoting him to 10th place. He also amassed two additional points on his super license, leaving him teetering on the brink of a suspension. Post-race, Russell seemed to draw parallels between the collision and Ticktum's infamous karting crash. ‌ When asked if he could recall witnessing something similar in F1, Russell said: "Not in Formula 1. Maybe in Formula E. Yes, maybe there's one British driver in Formula E. But as I said, Max is one of the best in the world." ‌ Russell's comments were a pointed comparison to Ticktum intentionally crashing into another competitor under safety car conditions in 2015 - an act that led to a two-year ban, with the second year suspended. Following his ban, Ticktum found his way into the Red Bull academy and had a spell at Williams before eventually joining Formula E team NIO333 in 2021, which is currently known as Cupra Kiro. Ticktum competed in two Formula E races in Shanghai at the weekend, coming fourth and 16th, respectively. The 25-year-old didn't let the mixed results dampen his spirits, sharing snippets of a night out on social media before taking to Instagram to respond to Russell's sharp remarks. "Good evening, sports fans, I hope you're all having a lovely Sunday. I've just had a very nice evening with the team and some of the guys from Porsche here in Shanghai," Ticktum said. "I'm just on the way back to the hotel. "It has come to my attention, via the Twittersphere, that a certain driver in Formula One, not to name names, but his name is George Russell, has made some rather choice comments about a certain Formula E driver. "He hasn't named my name, but it's quite obviously pointed at me," Ticktum argued. "I'd like to address those comments that he made. ‌ "Number one, thank you for the free publicity. We'll take that any day of the week. And two, while what Max did today was a little bit sceptical, to be likened to him at any point in my career is positive, if you ask me. Goodbye." Ticktum is in 10th place on the Formula E leaderboard after participating in 11 races this season. Russell, meanwhile, came fourth in Barcelona and sits fourth in the overall driver standings. The Mercedes driver was certain Verstappen had internationally steered into him. I've seen those sort of manoeuvres before on simulator games and go-karting but never in F1," Russell told Sky Sports. "Ultimately, we came home in P4 and he came home in P10. I don't really know what was going through his mind. It felt deliberate in the moment, so it felt surprising." Verstappen has since reflected on the incident and backtracked on his post-race comments.. "We had an exciting strategy and good race in Barcelona, till the safety car came out. Our tyre choice to the end and some moves after the safety car restart fuelled my frustration, leading to a move that was not right and shouldn't have happened," he said via Instagram. "I always give everything out there for the team and emotions can run high. You win some together, you lose some together. See you in Montreal."

Dan Ticktum on the wait before his first podium: 'It's been pretty depressing few years'

Image credit: Dan Ticktum/Instagram The success may have come late, but when it did, it tasted all the sweeter for Cupra Kiro driver Dan Ticktum. The 25-year-old from London, finally secured a place on the Formula E podium at the Tokyo E-Prix Round 9 on Sunday, finishing third in the race. It took Ticktum 57 starts and two previous top-five finishes to finally clinch a podium finish. Reflecting on the achievement, he acknowledged the tough journey that preceded it. Dan Ticktum is happy after his podium finish in Tokyo "It's been a pretty depressing few years I have to say up until this point," said Dan Ticktum. "In the last few races, we've sort of managed to get things in the window far more consistently which has given us a lot more confidence. We've still got a lot of people who were there when I first joined and I'm just really happy to reward them with something like this, to be the guy to do that for them is great," he added. The podium finish was not just a personal milestone for Ticktum but also a significant moment for his team, Kiro Race Co, who are gradually making their mark in the Formula E paddock. "I also appreciate everyone's support for voting me [PIF] Driver of the Day and all that kind of stuff — seems like not everyone hates me," he added. "I'm happy. I feel like this year, like the team and the championship — you know, the CEO Jeff (Dodds) and a few other people — are supporting my character a bit more and I'm just enjoying it a lot more, not only just the results are coming. The team understands me as a character and I have my rough edges here. I'm happy being me and if that isn't employable for other people then so be it." What's next in Formula E? Formula E now shifts to Shanghai, with the next rounds scheduled for Saturday, May 31, and Sunday, June 1, 2025. Ticktum will be eyeing another podium finish, aiming to continue his upward trajectory. The championship features 16 races across 10 world cities, and became the first global sport to be certified with a net zero carbon footprint back in 2020. There are six British drivers in total in the series from one nearly making it with AFC Wimbledon, to a die-hard Aston Villa fan - SunSport gives you the low down. OLIVER ROWLAND Rowland is not wrong when says he likes to 'do his talking on the track' with the 32-year-old storming towards the title this season. He is leading the championship on a whopping 161 points, 77 points above second-place Antonio Felix Da Costa. Away from the track, the Nissan driver is quiet and reserved, favouring toasting his numerous wins with a 'few beers' with his close circle. He is a devoted dad to his daughter Harper who is often seen in the Nissan garage or on his lap when conducting interviews. In April 2017 Rowland was signed to the role of development driver to the Renault F1 Team. A year later Rowland was confirmed as Williams Martini Racing's official Junior Driver. DAN TICKTUM The 25-year-old Cupra Kiro driver from London could not be any more different than Rowland. Ticktum wears his heart on his sleeve and isn't afraid to speak his mind on the team radio or in post-race interviews. He has earned a bit of a reputation as the bad boy of motor sport over the years and went viral for a swear-laden rant in Jeddah last season - but it seems in Formula E he has found his home. Ticktum rubbed shoulders with Lando Norris during his karting days and spent time at both Williams' and Red Bull's academies. His future is looking bright in Formula E after bagging his first-ever podium in Tokyo. Ticktum was banned for a year from motor sport for ignoring a safety car to purposefully crash into a karting rival. 4 Sam Bird once turned down a shot with AFC Wimbledon to pursue a career in motor sport SAM BIRD Twickenham-born Bird, 38, is an experienced McLaren driver who was once seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher's apprentice. Sam joined up with Mercedes for four years in 2010 as a test driver, going to most of the races and doing a lot of sim work. As Mercedes returned to F1 in 2010 it coincided with Schumacher making a comeback of his own. Schumacher was Bird's childhood hero and the pair once even went sky-diving together. Bird isn't half bad at football and played for AFC Wimbledon as a youngster before turning them down for a career in motor sport. He has two dogs, Buddy and Bear, one is a cavapoo and the other a golden doodle and is in a relationship with former Love Island star Jess Impiazzi. JAKE HUGHES Brummie driver Hughes is a classic example of the saying you can take the boy out of Birmingham but not Birmingham out of the boy. The Maserati driver is a die-hard Aston Villa fan who chooses to bring porridge to the track for his brekky each morning. He loves cats and own two called Benny and Ollie, nicknamed Boo Boo and Bear, with his fiance Abby at their home. Hughes won the inaugural BRDC Formula 4 Championship and has won multiple races at Formula 3. TAYLOR BARNARD The baby-faced 20-year-old was born and raised in Norwich and is forging a name for himself with McLaren's Formula E team. At 19 years and 331 days, Barnard became the youngest competitive driver in the series' 10-year history. In his junior career, Barnard finished second to Mercedes' Andrea Kimi Antonelli in both the 2022 ADAC German Formula 4 Championship and 2023 Formula Regional Middle East Championship. 4 Jake Dennis is the most recent British FE champion JAKE DENNIS 29-year-old Dennis competes for Andretti and is the most recent British FE champion, winning the 2022-23 title. He was born in Nuneaton and debuted in karting at eight, winning the junior British Championship in 2010. In 2016, Dennis debuted in GP3, winning two races, achieving fourth place in the final standings with Charles Leclerc claiming the title. Dennis, who lives in Monaco, adores his pet chihuahua Billy with the pooch often seen accompanying him on a private jet to races.
