Alleged accomplice charged with murder in the death of KC sports reporter
An alleged accomplice who was facing robbery and theft charges related to the death of Kansas City sports reporter Adan Manzano has also been charged with murder in the case. Rickey White, who is currently incarcerated at Jefferson Parish Correctional Center, now faces a second-degree murder charge, according to a news release Monday from Kenner Police Chief Keith Conley. White is also charged with simple robbery, access device fraud, illegal transmission of monetary funds, bank fraud, and computer fraud. Investigators believe White, 34, worked with suspect Danette Colbert, 48, who was arrested on Feb. 6 and faces the same charges, to steal money from Manzano, a scheme the two have allegedly done before. White was arrested in Hollywood, Florida, on March 14. The two had a preliminary hearing on April 16, where a request to set bond was denied. At the time of his death, Manzano, 27, was on assignment in New Orleans, Louisiana, covering Super Bowl LIX for Telemundo and Tico Sports, a multimedia production company that broadcasts Kansas City Chiefs games in Spanish. Manzano was found unresponsive in his Comfort Suites hotel room in Kenner, Louisiana, on Feb. 5. 'The Kenner Police Department continues to work closely with the Louisiana State Police, the Louisiana Attorney General's Office, and the Jefferson Parish District Attorney's Office to ensure that all individuals involved in this case are held accountable and brought to justice,' Conley said in the news release. During a news conference in March, Jefferson Parish Coroner Gerry Cvitanovich confirmed the cause of Manzano's death was the combined toxic effects of Xanax and alcohol, as well as 'positional asphyxia.' Manzano was found dead face-down on a pillow, he said. Security video allegedly shows the two at his hotel between 4:30 a.m. and 5 a.m. on the morning of his death, before she could be seen leaving alone. Colbert was linked to the death after Manzano's phone and credit card were found at her home in Slidell, Louisiana, and investigators found surveillance video of several locations where the two were seen together in New Orleans. Colbert allegedly used Manzano's credit card at several stores in the New Orleans area, and police said Xanax was found at her home. In March, Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill said Colbert should have been in custody on previous charges at the time of Manzano's death, and that she should not have been eligible for probation under those prior charges. White and Colbert have been in the criminal system for at least a decade, according to court records. White's arrest record stretches back to at least 2011, including arrests for theft-related crimes, marijuana possession and fleeing police. Colbert has a lengthy arrest record dating back to 2009, including arrests for similar charges of theft and fraud. The two have also been involved in at least three incidents together, according to court records. Two of those incidents were domestic disputes between the two. In December 2022, in Slidell, White was driving a 2014 white Maserati while Colbert was a passenger when he was stopped by St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office deputies for running through a stop sign. White was arrested for marijuana possession, while Colbert had warrants out for her arrest, according to records. In April 2023, Colbert made a 911 call for a domestic disturbance, records show. Colbert told a dispatcher that her ex was at her home attempting to retrieve his belongings, including her dog. The 911 report noted that the two were arguing. In Feb. 2024, a St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office deputy was dispatched to Colbert's home for a domestic disturbance. White was arrested and charged with one count of domestic abuse battery/strangulation. Court records do not indicate how that case was resolved. Woman charged with murder of Kansas City sports reporter, accomplice also charged: Police
A woman previously linked to the death of Adan Manzano, the Kansas City sports reporter who died while in New Orleans for Super Bowl LIX last month, now faces a second-degree murder charge, police in Kenner, Louisiana, said Tuesday. Police also said an 'accomplice' to the woman was arrested in Florida and is also facing charges connected to the death. Danette Colbert, who was arrested Feb. 6, the day after after Manzano's death in the New Orleans suburb, now faces one count of second-degree murder, in addition to previous charges that include fraud and robbery. In a press conference announcing the developments Tuesday, Kenner Police Chief Keith Conley said investigators linked the man, who he identified as Rickey White, to Colbert using 'correspondence' and said police believe the two were working 'hand in hand.' Police said investigators believe Colbert intentionally drugged Manzano before robbing him, following a pattern seen in prior offenses she allegedly committed. Authorities said they believed she worked with White. White was arrested in Hollywood, Florida, on Friday, and now faces simple robbery, access device fraud, illegal transmission of monetary funds, bank fraud and computer fraud charges, Conley said. White was not charged with murder, he said. 'There's a lot of pieces in this puzzle,' Conley said. 'We recognize this is going to be a circumstantial case. (Jefferson Parish's district attorney) has some heavy lifting to do with that, but the fact that we crossed the hurdle by getting the probable cause affidavit signed for her being charged with second-degree murder, it's a good start. 'We're not going to give up. We are still investigating this case around the clock.' In the news conference, Jefferson Parish Coroner Gerry Cvitanovich confirmed the cause of Manzano's death was the combined toxic effects of Xanax and alcohol, as well as 'positional asphyxia.' Manzano was found dead face-down on a pillow, he said. Given the 'uncertain circumstances' surrounding the incident, the manner of Manzano's death was ruled to be 'undetermined,' Cvitanovich said. 'Something may come up, we may find something that changes the opinion of our group of pathologists, and we may change it,' he said. 'Right now, that's where we are.' Manzano, 27, was on assignment in New Orleans for the Super Bowl when he was found dead in his hotel room Feb. 5. He was covering the game for Telemundo and Tico Sports, a production company that broadcasts Kansas City Chiefs games in Spanish. Colbert was linked to the death after Manzano's phone and credit card were found at her home and investigators found several locations where the two were seen together in New Orleans. Colbert allegedly used Manzano's credit card at several stores in the New Orleans area, and police said Xanax was found at her home. Security video allegedly shows the two at his hotel between 4:30 a.m. and 5 a.m. on the morning of his death before she could be seen leaving alone. Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill said last week that Colbert should have been in custody on previous charges at the time of Manzano's death, and that she should not have been eligible for probation under those prior charges. Murder charges filed against suspect in death of Kansas City sports reporter Adan Manzano during Super Bowl week
A woman has been charged with second-degree murder in connection to the death of Kansas City sports reporter Adan Manzano, police in Kenner, Louisiana, announced Tuesday. Danette Colbert was the last person seen with Manzano before he was found dead in his Kenner hotel room Feb. 5, the Wednesday before Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans. Surveillance video observed Colbert leaving Manzano's hotel room and she was found with his cellphone and credit cards in her possession when arrested two days later. Manzano, 27, a reporter and anchor for Telemundo Kansas City and Tico Sports, was in New Orleans to cover the Kansas City Chiefs during Super Bowl LIX. Colbert was initially charged with property crimes, including theft and fraud-related offenses after being found using Manzano's credit card at multiple stores. "We recognize it's going to be a circumstantial case," Kenner police chief Keith Conley told reporters, via ABC News. "We're not going to give up. We are still investigating this case around the clock." A reporter covering the upcoming SuperBowl has died in New Orleans. Adan Manzano was described as a "rising star" journalist. He covered university and professional sports teams in Kansas City since 2021, conducting interviews in both English and Spanish. — Inside Edition (@InsideEdition) February 7, 2025 Results from Manzano's autopsy were revealed at a Tuesday news conference. The reporter died from the combined effects of anti-anxiety medication Xanax and alcohol, in addition to "positional asphyxia," according to Jefferson Parish coroner Dr. Gerry Cvitanovich. Manzano's alcohol level was almost three times the legal limit, the coroner added. However, Manzano's exact cause of death is still to be determined due to the "uncertain circumstances" of the case, which will either be ruled a homicide or accidental overdose, depending on the findings. Yet authorities can still pursue a murder case. "In most cases of overdose deaths, the manner of death is accidental, and that's whether or not there's positional asphyxia," Cvitanovich said, via ABC News. "However, given the uncertain circumstances of this case and the additional collection of circumstances of this case, we felt that the most appropriate manner of death is undetermined." An alleged accomplice was also arrested last Friday in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Rickey White will be charged with simple robbery, bank fraud, computer fraud, access device fraud and illegal transmission of monetary funds based on correspondence with Colbert, reports New Orleans WVUE-TV.
