Sundae Scoop opens 2nd ice cream shop in Hampton Roads
Two scoops are better than one.
Sundae Scoop, a veteran-owned ice cream shop in Virginia Beach, opened a second location, in Chesapeake's Las Gaviotas Shopping Center, near Tidewater Community College.
Owners Philip and Sibs Harrell expanded their business to accommodate employees returning home from college.
'I wouldn't have had enough work for them at the Kempsville location,' Philip Harrell said.
The Chesapeake store has a bigger kitchen. Currently, Harrell produces 120 gallons of ice cream per week, but he needs 400 gallons to keep up with demand.
The creamery also plans to add new selections to its menu: ice cream cakes and bars.
Customers can still find their favorite ice creams, such as salted caramel butter pecan, German chocolate cake and rum raisin. Harrell will make other cool flavors based on recommendations from the Chesapeake community.
The new spot held a grand opening celebration on April 18 featuring free scoops, door games and a ribbon-cutting with city officials. The event and location were supported by a $5,000 small business grant from Cricket Wireless.
