JET 24/FOX 66 meteorologists star in upcoming spring Severe Weather Special

(WJET/WFXP) – Familiar faces will be recounting a devastating weather event that occurred decades ago later this week. The JET 24/FOX 66 meteorology team will take a look back at the historic and devastating May 31st, 1985 tornado outbreak. On that infamous day, 44 tornadoes occurred in parts of Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York and Ontario, Canada. Of those 44 tornadoes, 23 touched down in Pennsylvania, which caused 75 fatalities and 875 injuries. Tom Atkins will look at the two that hit Erie County, which were both an F4 intensity on the Fujita Scale of damage, which runs from 0-5. One tornado hit the town of Albion, and another went north of Corry into New York State. Atkins will look at another F4 that went from the Atlantic into southwest Crawford County and all the way into Forest County. It stayed on the ground for 56 miles. Craig Flint will look into the infamous F5 tornado that started in Newton Falls, Ohio, which went 47 miles into Mercer County, Pennsylvania. It remains the farthest east F5 ever to occur in the United States. And finally, Jacob Matthews will report on the Tidioute Tornado in Warren County, an F3 that cut a 17-mile, 800-yard wide path into the Allegheny National Forest. The show airs at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 16, on JET. You can also watch it at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 17, on FOX. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
