Lea Michele Resuscitated ‘Funny Girl.' Her Next Move Is ‘Chess.'
The 1980s musical 'Chess,' about a love triangle set in the geopolitically charged world of top-level chess tournaments at the height of the Cold War, will be revived on Broadway for the first time this fall, with Lea Michele playing one of the three starring roles. Michele was last on Broadway in 2023 in 'Funny Girl,' whose fortunes she revived after stepping in as a replacement when the initial lead wasn't working out. Best known for portraying an ambitious musical theater actress on the television series 'Glee,' Michele will star in 'Chess' alongside Aaron Tveit (a Tony winner for 'Moulin Rouge! The Musical') and Nicholas Christopher (a 'Hamilton' alumnus who recently thrilled critics in an Encores! production of 'Jelly's Last Jam'). The show is the brainchild and passion project of Tim Rice, the Tony-winning lyricist of 'Evita' and 'Aida.' Rice collaborated with Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus of Abba on the music and lyrics. The revival was announced Wednesday, but the announcement did not include specific dates or the exact theater — only that it would be staged in the fall at a theater operated by the Shubert Organization. The lead producers will be Tom Hulce, Robert Ahrens and the Shubert Organization. 'Chess,' set primarily in Bangkok and Budapest, tells a fictional story about two grandmasters, one American (Tveit) and one Soviet (Christopher), facing off at a chess tournament, joined by a woman (Michele) whom both of them, at various points, love. The musical, first staged in London in 1986 and then heavily revised for a Broadway production in 1988, has an ardent fan base, but the Broadway production was a flop, and the show has been reworked for subsequent stagings around the world. This fall's production features another new book, by the screenwriter Danny Strong. The show will be directed by Michael Mayer, who directed Michele both in her breakout Broadway role, in 'Spring Awakening,' and in 'Funny Girl.' Mayer and Strong, working with Rice, have been rethinking 'Chess' for some time — they collaborated on a 2018 concert presentation of the musical at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington.

X Factor winner Joe McElderry looks unrecognisable as he shows off his shirtless physique while hitting the beach in Barbados
Joe McElderry was spotted looking strikingly different to his X Factor heyday while soaking up the sun in Barbados on Friday. The British singer, 33, shot to fame more than 15 years ago when he won the show at aged just 18 in 2009. And nearly two decades after his triumph, Joe looked almost unrecognisable from his baby-faced younger self as he enjoyed a sunny day on the beach during his Caribbean holiday. The singer, who now rocks a rugged look with dark stubble and slicked-back hair, went for a jog along the shoreline, showing off his tanned physique. The star then stripped off his shirt and took a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear ocean. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. It comes after Joe took to the stage to star as Pharaoh in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat in March. Dancing and singing across the stage at Manchester's Opera House, he put on an energetic performance as he showcased his muscly physique in a silver gladiator costume. The production of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's show kicked off their tour before Christmas and started in Edinburgh. Prior to this, Joe revealed he trained with former Miss Universe finalist Caroline Dixon and followed a strict diet to get in shape for the role. Previously speaking in an interview with Fabulous magazine, he said: 'Most of the stuff we do is killer, but in a weird way I really enjoy it.' He added: 'I'm a really active person and I've done lots of charity bike rides.' The star showed off his incredible body transformation on Instagram at the end of 2024 as he proudly displayed his toned physique as he donned nothing but a pair of grey workout shorts and chunky black trainers. He captioned the snap with: '2025 the year of the workout' alongside several emojis. The singer has worked hard to lose weight after he sported a fuller frame during an appearance on ITV daytime show, Lorraine, in 2015. Joe starred on X Factor when he was just 18 years old back in 2009, beating Stacey and Olly to the crown. But more recently he has embarked on a huge career move and is starring on the podcast, That's Ridiculous alongside his grandma Hilda. Joe also reminisced about his time on the show which catapulted him to fame. He said: 'Every time I see that clip, I feel so old, I look so young on there!', he said. Joe's debut single - a cover of Miley Cyrus' The Climb - rose to number one in the UK charts immediately after his X Factor triumph. The talent show star boasts a discography of five albums, which all made the top 20.

Sir Tim Rice picked 'beautiful, romantic' Sunderland
World-famous lyricist Sir Tim Rice is returning to theatres across the UK with a new tour. But it is a date at the Sunderland Empire that he is most looking forward to because the Oscar-winner has been a die-hard Sunderland football fan since the age of seven. Now 80, Sir Tim recalls how he went in a different direction from his schoolfriends in the Home Counties who supported local teams like Luton Town and looked down the list of clubs in the old Division One and saw the name Sunderland."What a beautiful, romantic word - conjures up images of beaches and palm trees swaying in the wind," he says. "And I thought that's it, my team's Sunderland."I found out about six weeks later that I'd picked the team the furthest away I could have done. I couldn't change at that point. "You can change everything in life but you can't change your football team, even when you're seven."He has remained loyal ever since and has been a trustee at the Foundation of Light, the club's charitable arm, for 20 years, where he tries to tie in visits with a home game at the Stadium of Light. Sir Tim says he first visited the North East when he was sent up by music industry executives in London in the 1960s to uncover hidden talent in the region."I was looking for fledgling rock stars," he says."There was a group called the Gas Board, with a singer by the name of Bryan Ferry."I did not spot that Bryan was going to be a megastar." 'Hits - and flops' Sir Tim's tour, My Life In Musicals - I Know Him So Well, which also has dates at Darlington's Hippodrome, sees him reflect on his illustrious career in musical include numbers from stage shows including Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita and Chess, plus the Disney productions The Lion King, Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast."The band play the hits - and some flops - and I just talk through my good fortune in my career," he says."I chat about how the songs got written. I talk about the people I've written with - because I only do the words. "I've written with some great composers - Andrew Lloyd Webber, Elton John, Alan Menken, Bjorn and Benny, Mike Batt, John Barry - and I reveal what they're like to work with."
