Lifeguards back at 32 extra Devon and Cornwall beaches for summer

Lifeguards are returning to 32 additional beaches across south-west England on Saturday. The RNLI said lifeguards would return to four beaches in Devon and 28 in Cornwall, giving beachgoers the opportunity to visit 58 lifeguarded beaches across the said warm weather was expected to continue, so advised those planning to swim in the sea to choose a lifeguarded beach and pay attention to any flags. A RNLI spokesperson said it was preparing for a busy summer season after responding to 7,000 incidents in the South West last year. 'Lifeguards are experts' They added the RNLI had helped more than 9,000 people and saved 43 lives last year in the South West. It said additional beaches would open on 19 July for the summer holiday period. Tim Treloar, RNLI water safety education manager, said: "Over the last two weeks new and returning lifeguards have been going through their induction period where they train in many areas including essential skills in casualty care, fitness testing, lifesaving skills in and out of the water, and watercraft operations."Regional lifeguard lead Guy Botterill said: "Our lifeguards are experts on the local beach risks, tides and weather conditions, so please speak to them for advice and information."

Exmouth Deaf Academy students teach RNLI lifeguards sign language

Deaf students have been teaching some of Devon's lifeguards sign language to help keep more people safe in and around the students from the Deaf Academy in Exmouth taught lifeguards phrases in British Sign Language (BSL) relating to water safety during Deaf Awareness return, the RNLI lifeguards shared safety tips with the students to help them stay safe in the water safety education manager Tim Treloar said it had been "an incredible opportunity to learn some key BSL phrases which could be crucial to keeping beach goers safe". "These phrases can be shared across the RNLI to enhance the opportunity to communicate with deaf individuals to ensure everyone has a safe day at the beach," he Awareness Week ran from 5 to 9 May and was aimed at highlighting the communication barriers faced by deaf people which could affect them accessing life-saving Stocks, partnerships and community manager at the Deaf Academy, said: "This partnership emphasises the importance of accessible communication and encourages individuals, businesses and organisations to become more deaf-aware."Together, we advocate for an inclusive and safe community for everyone."

Thousands of primary schoolchildren in Jersey have been visited by RNLI lifeguards ahead of their return to Le Braye beach this bank holiday weekend. The Meet the Lifeguards programme has toured 25 schools and given sea safety advice to nearly 3,000 pupils. Tips have included how to float to live, how to spot and escape rip currents and what to do in an emergency. RNLI daily patrols resume on Saturday at Le Braye, with the service extending to other beaches later in May. Tim Treloar, water safety education manager for the South West, said: "Our lifeguards have really enjoyed returning to schools this year. "We aim to increase children's awareness of the potential dangers that exist around the coast, such as being aware of the weather conditions and changing tides, along with the ability to identify beach flags." The RNLI said it urged people to choose a lifeguarded beach where possible, and reminded beachgoers to call 999 and ask for the coastguard in any coastal emergency.
