Jason Zhang mourns the loss of Gu Wei
9 May - Jason Zhang recently took to Weibo to mourn the loss of Gu Wei, who passed away just recently.
On 7 May, following news of the singer-songwriter's death, Jason shared a heartfelt message that read, "We first met at the Chengdu auditions for 'Super Star' in 2004. The first time I saw you, you were wearing a bandanna, holding a guitar, singing a Beyond song... and I thought, 'This person sings so well - surely we'll become friends.' Sure enough, we both advanced to the Shanghai competition. On stage, we were both rivals and friends... off stage, we wrote 'North Star's Love' together."
"At the finals, I handed you the mic. I wanted to share that moment of glory with you, and I wanted to hear you sing that line: 'You and I are lost in the crowd, unable to see the future...'" he continued.
Jason said that they both stayed in Shanghai following the competition, and that he would often hear Gu making music and then the latter would have him try and sing them. He said that both of them, as well as their music director Lao Zhao, would often sit in the living room, watching shows on TV and talk about their future together.
"Time flew by. We met a few more times, had some chats, and you'd talk about the 'challenges' you were facing... The night before we met at the recording of Time Concert, I couldn't wait. I booked a KTV so we could hang out first, hoping the music would help you relax. I picked that song we both loved, 'Unafraid' and when we sang together, the chemistry was still there. You sang 'A Night Like This' and it still moved us to tears. Little did we know, you had been battling illness for so many, many years..."
Jason said that he will always miss the Gu Wei that he knew - a humorous guy who was always cracking jokes and laughing at his jokes, who expressed himself loudly through music, wearing the same bandanna.
Gu Wei was reported to have passed away due to breathing difficulties. The singer was battling diabetes and other complications. He was 45.
