Will The Belmont Stakes Return To Saratoga In 2026?

Will The Belmont Stakes Return To Saratoga In 2026? originally appeared on Paulick Report. The 2026 Belmont Stakes could be run at Saratoga Race Course for a third and final year before relocating back to Belmont Park in Elmont N.Y., according to the Times Union. The new Belmont Park is scheduled for completion in September 2026–three months after the Belmont Stakes—making it possible that the race will remain at Saratoga for one more year. 'NYRA remains focused on conducting a successful and memorable 2025 Belmont Stakes Racing Festival at Saratoga Race Course beginning Wednesday, June 4,' said Patrick McKenna, Vice President of Communications at New York Racing Association (NYRA). 'However, we certainly appreciate the interest around the 2026 edition and will be finalizing and announcing its location in the coming weeks.' Advertisement If Saratoga is confirmed as the 2026 host, it will offer the historic venue one last opportunity to witness a potential Triple Crown winner. That dream was dashed last year when Seize The Grey beat Mystic Dan in the Preakness Stakes. This year, Kentucky Derby winner Sovereignty skipped the Preakness, with his connections opting to target the Belmont, and possibly the Travers. 'It's not the fact that you run in the Derby and then you run back in two weeks,' trainer Bill Mott told Blood-Horse following Sovereignty's Derby win, when asked about skipping the Preakness. 'It's not that horses can't do that. We opted to look at the long term and his whole career. As a trainer, one thing on my bucket list is winning the Travers. I'd love to win it and that's one of the races under consideration.' There remains a possibility that the 2026 Belmont Stakes could be held at a partially complete Belmont Park, which NYRA has made a plan for. However, running the race at an unfinished venue might take away from the excitement of unveiling a fully redeveloped Belmont Park in 2027—when the track is also set to host the Breeders' Cup World Championships. Which prisons are on strike in NY? See the list

As correctional officers at New York prisons continue to strike, these are the prisons where workers were confirmed as striking as of Thursday morning. This is a developing story and this list will likely change Visitation was also suspended at a number of facilities on Wednesday, according to DOCCS — including Elmira, Attica, Auburn, Five Points, Upstate, Clinton, Wende, Green Haven, Coxsackie and Eastern New York Correctional Facilities. Adirondack Correctional Facility Collins Correctional Facility Elmira Correctional Facility Attica Correctional Facility Groveland Correctional Facility Auburn Correctional Facility Cayuga Correctional Facility Five Points Correctional Facility Sing Sing Correctional Facility Marcy Correctional Facility Franklin Correctional Facility Bare Hill Correctional Facility Upstate Correctional Facility Coxsackie Correctional Facility Greene Correctional Facility Clinton Correctional Facility Otisville Correctional Facility Woodbourne Correctional Facility Ulster State Correctional Facility Wallkill Correctional Facility Fishkill Correctional Facility Riverview Correctional Facility Eastern Correctional Facility Workers on strike held signs referring to and condemning the Humane Alternatives to Long-Term Solitary Confinement Act, or HALT Act, a law that in 2022 restricted the use of segregated confinement in favor of therapeutic and rehabilitative confinement options. Meanwhile, the union also raised concerns about overworked officers and understaffed prisons in recent months. The union president, Chris Summers, brought up a litany of concerns at a legislative hearing earlier in February regarding the governor's proposed budget, including increased violence at prisons, unsafe working conditions and the erosion of benefits. 'These issues need serious consideration and financial investment and have been continuously ignored,' Summers said. 'Being able to report to a safe workplace and return home safely to their families after their expected shift is something that should be required and expected — not something my members should hope for.' The strikes also come in the wake of a lockdown at Collins Correctional facility - a medium-security prison for men in Erie County - where inmates 'took over' a section of the prison for several hours, according to the Times Union. The strikes also follow a December beating at Marcy Correctional Facility in Central New York that led to the death of inmate Robert Brooks, which was recorded by body cameras worn by correctional officers. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul on Wednesday signed an executive order activating New York National Guard members to prisons across the state where corrections officers have walked off the job. Workers at more than two dozen state prisons are on strike this week, protesting working conditions and increased violence within the facilities and employees' benefits. 'These disruptive and unsanctioned work stoppages by some correction officers must end as they are jeopardizing the safety of their colleagues, the prison population, and causing undue fear for the residents in the surrounding communities,' Hochul said Wednesday in a news release. Hochul on Wednesday said she understood the "incredibly difficult work our corrections officers do under challenging circumstances." She also noted that her main job as governor is to protect all New Yorkers, which includes maintaining order in state prisons, and, in a video, Hochul directed all involved in the strike to "stop these actions immediately." "Do what's right," she said. "Do your jobs." This article originally appeared on Rochester Democrat and Chronicle: Which prisons are on strike in NY? See the list

Ex-con charged with shooting Bronx dad over parking spot did time for 1997 upstate murder

He's done it before. The 46-year-old ex-con charged with gunning down a beloved Bronx dad over a parking spot Sunday did 24 years in prison for the cold-blooded killing of a Schenectady man nearly 30 years ago. Lavar Davis was just 18 when he shot and killed Floyd Berkley, 22, on Nov. 9, 1997, and then eluded cops in the upstate city by getting $300 in bus fare from a buddy, the Times Union reported at the time. Davis, of Brooklyn, later pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and spent nearly a quarter of a century in state prison until he was paroled on March 11, 2021, state prison records show. Shortly before 2 a.m. Sunday, the NYPD said Davis and his gal pal parked a car outside the Bronx home of father of four Trevor Hughes, blocking the hard-working dad's parking spot. After a scuffle, Davis allegedly shot Hughes to death, with the victim's girlfriend 'badly beaten' in the senseless confrontation, Bronx prosecutors said at Davis' arraignment Monday. According to Bronx Assistant District Attorney Lawrence Rozenblum, Davis's upstate murder rap is part of a violent criminal history that includes a separate concurrent sentence in Schenectady on a first-degree assault conviction that led to a sentence of 10 to 20 years in prison. That case stemmed from the shooting of another Brooklynite, 18-year-old Franklin Hemingway. In the 1997 murder, Davis and a co-defendant, Yusef Ramsey, got into a brawl with Berkley in Schenectady, with Ramsey slugging the victim and Davis shooting him, the Times Union reported. Ramsey, who was also from Brooklyn, then loaned Davis $300 to take a bus out of town — although police eventually caught up with both men, the outlet said. Ramsey later pleaded guilty to hindering prosecution and assault in a plea deal after ratting out Davis — who also took a plea in the case. 'We struck our deal before Davis' plea, so we're standing by it,' then Schenectady Deputy Chief Assistant District Attorney Philip Mueller told reporters at the time about Ramsey's deal. Now Davis is back behind bars facing a new murder charge.

Manhunt underway for woman linked to killing of Vermont Border Patrol agent: report

A manhunt is underway for a 32-year-old woman suspected of buying the handguns used in the killing of a Vermont Border Patrol agent last week, according to a report. Law enforcement agencies in several states are searching for Michelle J. Zajko, who is considered "armed and dangerous," Albany's Times Union reported, citing police records. U.S. Border Patrol Agent David "Chris" Maland was gunned down near the Canada-Vermont border Jan. 20, and, four days later, Teresa Youngblut, 21, was taken into custody. "The United States Attorney's Office District of Vermont has charged Youngblut with assault on a federal law enforcement officer," the FBI's office in Albany said at the time. "Our hearts remain with our partners at U.S. Border Patrol Swanton Sector as they mourn this tremendous loss." Gun Used In Vermont Border Agent Shootout Linked To Double Murder Suspect, Prosecutors Say Maland was shot and killed during a traffic stop of Youngblut between Newport and Orleans, Vermont. Her passenger, Felix Bauckholt, was also armed but was fatally shot by federal agents after Youngblut opened fire. Read On The Fox News App Zajko allegedly bought .40-caliber and .380-caliber handguns in February 2024 in Mount Tabor, Vermont, that were used in Maland's shooting, the Times Union reported, citing court documents. German National Suspect Identified In Killing Of Us Border Patrol Agent In Vermont Zajko is also considered a "person of interest" in a double murder in Pennsylvania and another murder in California, prosecutors revealed, without naming her. Maland, a Minnesota native and U.S. Air Force veteran, worked as a Border Patrol agent at the U.S. Customs and Border Protection's Newport Station. He spent nine years in the military and 15 working for the federal government. He was also a K-9 handler and previously served as a Border Patrol agent in Texas near the southern border, Maland's family told The Associated Press. "On January 20, 2025, at approximately 3:00 pm, an on-duty, uniformed United States Border Patrol (USBP) Agent initiated a stop of a blue 2015 Toyota Prius Hatchback with [a] North Carolina license plate ... to conduct an immigration inspection as it was driving southbound on Interstate 91 in Coventry, Vermont," an FBI criminal complaint obtained by Fox News states. "The registered owner of the vehicle, Felix Baukholt, a citizen of Germany, appeared to have an expired visa in a Department of Homeland Security database. Youngblut was driving the Prius, and Baukholt was the lone passenger in the Prius. "Between approximately 3:00 pm and 3:15 pm, agents reported gunshots at the scene," the affidavit added. "Supervisory Border Patrol Agent Cameron Thompson was notified of the incident and responded to the scene of the stop, arriving at approximately 3:35 pm. "He spoke with two of the Border Patrol Agents involved in the incident. They described that both Baukholt and Youngblut possessed firearms and that Youngblut drew and fired a handgun toward at least one of the uniformed Border Patrol Agents without warning when outside the driver's side of the Prius." The FBI's Albany office shared a statement with Fox News Digital that said: "As stated in open court and in court filings, Teresa Youngblut is believed to have associations with other individuals suspected of violent acts in multiple states, to include Pennsylvania and California. The FBI is coordinating information sharing on any case related details with our partners from various law enforcement agencies to effectively follow every lead and aggressively investigate these connections. As part of the continuous dialogue with those partners, especially following an assault on a law enforcement officer, the FBI routinely shares appropriate law enforcement information about potential persons of interest to enhance officer safety and situational awareness. As this is an ongoing investigation, the FBI cannot comment further on any additional details not included in the court filings." Fox News' Greg Norman contributed to this report.
