1 dead after impaired driving suspect on I-77 in Mooresville crashes into a tree
A passenger died along Interstate 77 in Mooresville Friday night after a driver suspected of speeding and being impaired crashed into a tree, State Highway Patrol Trooper Christopher Casey said.
Timmy Hillard Hartsoe Jr., 43, of Conover, died at a hospital, Casey said in a news release.
Hartsoe was in a 2002 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck whose driver lost control about 8:20 p.m. on I-77 South near mile marker 39, the trooper said. That's north of N.C. 150 Exit 36.
The driver, 39-year-old Floyd Dale Davis II of Newton, veered off the right side of the highway and hit a tree on the passenger side of his truck, Casey said.
Davis was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries, the trooper said.
Charges are pending, Casey said. The Highway Patrol has to finish its investigation and discuss charges in consultation with Iredell County prosecutors, he said.
The wreck closed I-77 South for about two hours as troopers investigated.
