Tottenham Hotspur have officially returned Timo Werner back to his Bundesliga club. The 2024/25 Europa League champions maintained no interest in retaining the RB Leipzig professional's services next season. Where the 57-times-caped German international will head next remains unclear. Leipzig themselves have no plans to retain the Stuttgart native. Werner's steady decline leaves him with an estimated market worth of just €7m. The one-time €53m Chelsea purchase wasn't even included in Tottenham's Europa League squad after the turn-of-the calendar year and managed only 178 Premier League minutes in 2025 Advertisement At the end of the first half of the season, Spurs coach Ange Postecoglou specifically called out Werner for 'not playing anywhere near the level he is capable of' after a 1-1 draw with Glasgow Rangers in the Europa League. Timo Werner will not be joining Spurs permanently with the club turning down an option to sign him for £8.5m at expiration of their loan agreement with RB Leipzig Tottenham have decided against signing misfit forward Timo Werner after confirming his return to RB Leipzig - but a £21m deal to sign Austria international Kevin Danso will be formally completed on Sunday. Spurs had an option to buy the Germany international for £8.5m at the end of his loan but that has not been taken up with the Europa League winners naming him as one of six senior players departing the club. Werner, 29, did not score a goal in 18 league appearances this season and missed a large chunk of the campaign with a hamstring injury. He departs with three goals in all competitions across 41 appearances in a season and a half. Goalkeepers Fraser Forster, 37, and Alfie Whiteman, 26, are both being released at the end of their contracts this month, while left back Sergio Reguilon, 28, will also become a free agent. Forster joined Spurs in the summer of 2022 following several years at Southampton and featured in the early stages of their Europa League triumph. Academy graduate Whiteman made just a single first-team appearance, while Reguilon leaves after a five-year stint that saw him make loan moves to Atletico Madrid, Manchester United and Brentford. Welsh defender Ben Davies is also out of contract on June 30 but may still sign a new deal amid interest from Championship new boys Wrexham, while the future of Mathys Tel remains unclear. He signed on loan from Bayern Munich in January and that included an option to buy the France U21 forward for £50m. Tottenham have also said Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg's loan to Marseille will become a permanent switch. Danso's loan from RC Lens will be converted into a permanent stay in north London, to the tune of £21m as per the terms of his loan deal. The 26-year-old made 10 Premier League appearances last season and came on as a late substitute as Spurs defeated Manchester United in the Europa League final. Tottenham confirm four summer departures, including two goalkeepers and a Champions League winner
Tottenham announced the departures of four players on Saturday morning. It was confirmed that goalkeepers Fraser Forster, 37, and Alfie Whiteman, 26, would both be leaving upon the expiration of their contracts at the end of June. Former Real Madrid left back Sergio Reguilon, 28, will also leave Spurs as a free agent this summer, while Timo Werner is returning to RB Leipzig. Werner, 29, had been on loan at Tottenham since January 2024 but the club decided against taking up their option of signing him permanently for €10 million (£8.43m). A short club statement posted on social media read: 'We can confirm the departures of Fraser Forster, Sergio Reguilon and Alfie Whiteman following the conclusion of their contracts, while Timo Werner departs following the conclusion of his loan spell. 'Thank you for your service and all the best for the future, lads'. All four departing players travelled to Bilbao earlier this month for the Europa League final. None of them featured in the 1-0 win over Manchester United but they were all pictured in full kit during the post-match trophy ceremony. Ex-England international Forster spent three seasons at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium but was never the first choice keeper. He made 34 first-team appearance during his Spurs career, including 21 in the Premier League. Meanwhile, Whiteman spent a decade with Spurs after joining the club's youth ranks in 2015. His only senior outing for Tottenham came in November 2020 when he featured as an 82nd-minute substitute in a 4-0 win over Ludogorets. Reguilon joined Spurs from Real in September 2020 and played in 67 games during his first two seasons in north London. But he spent the following two campaigns out on loan at Atletico Madrid, Manchester United and Brentford, before returning to Spurs last summer. He featured in just six matches in his final Spurs season, taking his overall total of appearances to 73. Werner — who won the UEFA Champions League in 2021 with former club Chelsea — scored just three goals in 41 games for Tottenham. He had netted 23 goals in 89 games duirng his Chelsea career.
