Agencies helping families affected by Mayflower storage fires

Killeen, TX (FOX 44) — Agencies are helping Killeen-area families affected by the Mayflower storage fires that destroyed furniture and other household goods. In response to the devastating Atkinson Avenue fire, Garden of Hope of Central Texas is coordinating in-kind donations to support affected families. There are 18 families who were affected by the warehouse fire and 16 of those families are asking for help. Organizations in Central Texas will be sponsoring a family. 'When they sponsor the family, they will help that family go from once they have their apartment to getting all the items that they need for an apartment and their personal needs to the end of it,' says Garden of Hope Foster Care Agency executive director Tina Capito. 'And then it will make it a little bit more personable.' Each family's needs are different, and Garden of Hope wants to personalize those needs. 'We're looking at approximately 16 families that we need to help rebuild their lives through getting furniture, clothing, kitchen items, things like that,' Capito said. 'There are several agencies that have teamed up together that will sponsor a family, some churches that are sponsoring a family.' Additionally, the United Way of the Greater Tri-County Area in Killeen is still collecting monetary donations to further support families in need. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
