Miti Adhikari: Kolkata boy who engineered the sound of rock gods
Mumbai : Miti Adhikari, a producer and sound engineer who worked with the British Broadcasting Corporation for over three decades, recording and mixing original tracks with everyone from Bruce Springsteen to Beyonce that would then be broadcast on television and the radio, died on Sunday. He was 69. Adhikari –– who gained the moniker Silver Fox –– turned his attention to the Indian indie scene in the late 2000s, when he worked on the songs of his cousin Neel Adhikari's band, Class Apart. The duo even had an outfit called MANA (formed using their initials). Adhikari worked on albums for The Supersonics, Menwhopause, Cassini's Division, Agnee and Bengali rock band, Jack Rabbit, shuttling between the UK and India. 'I don't understand the Bollywood scene much, but I love the underground scene. I've brought a travelling studio down here and I want to work with the bands to help in the evolution of the scene. At some stage, I want these bands to match their international counterparts,' he told the Hindustan Times in 2010 interview. Adhikari grew up in Kolkata, took his first guitar lessons with legendary blues artist Gussy Rikh, played the bass guitar and sang lead vocals in a rock band called Mahamaya. In 1977, at the age of 20, he went to London and after trying for months, was finally selected to join the BBC as a trainee sound engineer. The BBC would call bands to its famed Maida Vale studios for exclusive sessions, where they would record four songs in 12 hours. Adhikari's job, as he told HT in 2010, was to be 'a fresh pair of ears in the studio environment, who would give them a direction'. Adhikari recorded and mixed the song the same week after which it received extensive airtime. Bands often asked him to produce other songs for their albums. His repertoire included rock and indie legends including Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Arcade Fire, and the Foo Fighters. He also lent his expertise at the Glastonbury, T in the Park, and Reading and Leeds music festivals. Adhikari, who was based in Goa, is survived by his wife, Sam Adhikari, and his cousin Neel, among other family members.

Courier Business Conference to feature legendary T in the Park promoter
Geoff Ellis, the man behind major Scottish music festivals T in the Park and TRNSMT, will be the keynote speaker at this year's Courier Business Conference. The chief executive of DF Concerts will reflect on more than 40 years in the music business, during which time he has dealt with everyone from Oasis to Beyonce. DF Concerts is also behind the Summer Sessions concerts which brought Noel Gallagher and Stereophonics to Slessor Gardens in Dundee in 2022. This year's Courier Business Conference 2025, held in partnership with Henderson Loggie, will have the theme of powering Scotland's creative economy. This year's event brings together pioneers of gaming, music, fashion, design, media, and digital innovation to explore the future of one of Scotland's fastest-growing sectors. Last year's conference at the new Innovation Hub at Michelin Scotland Innovation Parc, looked at the plans and potential impact of the Eden Project coming to Dundee. This year we are also holding the conference in one of the city's newest spaces – the £9m virtual production studio at Water's Edge at City Quay. The studio is able to create hyper-realistic digital film sets on a giant digital screen and use cutting-edge techniques such as motion capture, made popular in films like Avatar. Dundee games entrepreneur and Water's Edge owner Chris van der Kuyl, will give an overview of the new technology and explain why it will draw businesses to the city as well as benefiting local companies. As the co-owner of 4J Studios, which helped make Minecraft a global phenomenon, he will also give his views on the games and tech sector. The conference, which runs from 8.15am to 2pm, will feature a panel discussion from representatives of the creative sector before Mr Ellis' keynote speech. The Courier editor David Clegg will chair a panel discussion featuring local businesses on 'monetising creativity in Scotland'. He said: 'Scotland's creative industries are among the most exciting and dynamic parts of our economy – and Tayside, Fife and Stirling is right at the heart of that story. 'This year's Courier Business Conference will shine a light on the talent, innovation and entrepreneurial spirit driving growth in music, film, games, marketing and beyond. 'I'm particularly looking forward to hearing from Geoff Ellis, whose career reflects just how powerful creative vision can be when paired with business acumen.' David Smith, managing partner at Henderson Loggie, said: 'As sponsors of the Courier Business Conference, we're proud to support a platform that's spotlighting the creative industries shaping Courier Country. 'The conference is great event for business leaders to connect and hear from the creative minds driving change in our region. 'It's an exciting time for our local economy, and we're looking forward to being part of the conversation.' Tickets for the conference are available at

Scots music festival among most expensive in UK amid concerns over 'value for money'
Scotland festival-goers "should consider what they value most in their experience" because events are not cheap Festival season is nearly upon us and many Scots are gearing up for the music event of their choice. From Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival to Glasgow and Edinburgh Summer Sessions, we are totally spoiled for choice this summer. However, there is no escaping the fact that arts events are costly. Between food, drink, transport, and festival tickets themselves, music lovers can find themselves hundreds of pounds out of pocket before even seeing an act. In fact, a new study has revealed that a hugely popular music festival in Scotland is the ninth-most expensive music event in the UK. TRNSMT, which takes place over three days in Glasgow Green every July, is the pricey festival in question. TRNSMT charges £89.50 per day, according to research by online casino guide CritiqueJeu, which examined ticket prices for over 300 UK festivals scheduled in 2025, calculating the cost per day based on the minimum ticket price. The music extravaganza, organised by DF Concerts, boasts 50 Cent, The Script, Snow Patrol, and Biffy Clyro among its line-up this year. It has become the country's biggest festival since T in the Park wrapped up in 2016. "Seeing the variation in cost for these festivals can lead to a 'something for everyone' ideal," Paul LENGLET, co-founder and editor of CritiqueJeu, said on the findings. "However, with the cost of living still high and the UK public suffering from hits to their wallets, it's time to question whether the festivals are giving value for money." A general admission day ticket currently costs £89.50 from the TRNSMT website, while a full weekend job costs £249.50. There are also options to snap up two day tickets at varying prices. Elsewhere, Leeds Festival and Reading Festival, both happening in August, share first place as the UK's most expensive festivals based on the minimum day ticket price. These events, which typically feature similar line-ups across their separate locations, require £125 for a single day's attendance. BST Hyde Park ranked second most expensive at £101.95 per day. However, it comes with the advantage of a central London location and typically A-list headliners. The event runs from June 27 to July 13, 2025. If you're looking for a festival with multi-day camping and a diverse lineup, Homestead Festival, which was ranked third among all events at £100 per day, is a popular option. The festival takes place from July 18-20, 2025 at Fernhill Farm in Somerset. Parklife Weekender is fourth at £97.70 per day, scheduled for June 8 and 9, 2025 in Manchester. Meanwhile, Bloodstock, known for its heavy metal focus and devoted fan base, ranked fifth on the price index at £96 per day. In general, the study found a huge price gap between the most expensive and most affordable options. While Leeds and Reading charge £125 per day, Swanage Blues festival costs just £3.75 daily, Live on the Wye £3.50, and Chester Folk Festival £3.25. These budget-friendly options cost over 97 per cent less than the premium events. "Festival-goers should consider what they value most in their experience," Paul added. "The headline acts and production values at Leeds and Reading justify their premium pricing for many attendees. "But the amenities on offer are often basic portable toilets and junk food stands. Whereas, smaller events often offer more distinctive atmospheres and community connections that appeal to different audiences.'
