Free Tiny Tree program returns

The Tiny Trees Giveaway Program began taking this year's orders on Monday. Catch up fast: The annual program is designed to grow DSM's urban canopy by giving city residents up to five free trees. The intrigue: Program organizers change the types offered yearly, with nut and fruit trees recently being added to the mix. Persimmon trees were the most popular giveaway in 2024 and are the only species that returns from last year's list. Zoom in: Shade varieties available this year include blackgum, chestnut oak, shellbark hickory and bald cypress. Ornamental offerings include flowering dogwood, persimmon, serviceberry and elderberry. Norway spruces, a fast-growing evergreen, are also available. What's next: Orders will be taken until April 18 or when inventory is depleted. Tree pickups are Saturday, April 26, at Polk County River Place, 8am-noon.
