Tipu Pathan gang member killed in encounter near Solapur
PUNE: A key member of the Tipu Pathan gang, Shahrukh alias Atti Rahim Shaikh (23), was shot dead by Pune city police during a retaliatory firing operation in Lamboti near Solapur in the early hours of Sunday. The operation was carried out by units 5 and 6 of the crime branch. Shaikh, wanted in several serious criminal cases including those under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), had been absconding. He was tracked to Lamboti village, where he had been staying at his cousin's house for the past 20 days. According to police, a six-member crime branch team, along with local personnel from Mohol police station, reached the location around 3:30 am. With the help of a local woman, they approached the ground-plus-one structure where Shaikh was staying on the first floor with his wife and children. 'When the door was opened by Shaikh's wife, officers asked for his whereabouts. Sensing trouble, both started shouting. Assistant Police Inspector (API) Madan Kamble requested Shaikh to surrender, but his wife allegedly pushed the officer. Taking advantage of the distraction, Shaikh brandished a firearm and threatened to shoot,' a senior officer said. Despite repeated warnings to surrender, Shaikh opened fire. In retaliation, police fired back. An initial round struck him in the thigh, but he continued to shoot while using his children as cover. In the ensuing exchange, Shaikh was critically injured. He was rushed to Solapur Government Hospital, where he died during treatment. Some policemen sustained minor injuries in the operation. 'Shaikh fired at the police team while resisting arrest. Our officers returned fire in self-defence. He sustained injuries to vital organs and later died during treatment,' said Pankaj Deshmukh, (ACP Crime), Pune. Police said five rounds were fired during the encounter, of which two were by the police. 'The exact number of rounds fired is yet to be ascertained. We are waiting for the post-mortem report,' said Nikhil Pingale, (DCP Crime). Shaikh was a notorious figure in Pune's underworld and had been booked in 15 criminal cases since 2011. These included charges of extortion, attempted murder, and land grabbing. He was earlier booked under MCOCA in 2021 and again in 2025 for his involvement in a criminal conspiracy linked to the Kalepadal attempted murder case. He and 17 others were booked in the case, with nine arrested so far. Shaikh was among the eight who remained absconding. Police recovered two country-made pistols, one of which was used by the accused, along with nine live rounds and two koytas from the house. Following the encounter, Shaikh's father, Rahim Hasan Shaikh, alleged that the police staged a fake encounter. 'My son had given up crime and started a footwear business. The police wrongly booked him under MCOCA in a scuffle case and harassed him. That's why he had gone into hiding for the past three months,' he claimed. Meanwhile, based on a complaint filed by API Kamble, the Mohol police registered a case of an attempt to murder against Shaikh and his wife. The case has been filed under sections 109, 132, and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), section 3(25) of the Arms Act, and sections 37(1)(3) and 135 of the Maharashtra Police Act.

Pune: City police claimed to have gunned down wanted gangster Shahrukh alias Atti Rahim Shaikh (24) of Hadapsar in retaliatory firing at his relative's house at Lamboti village in Mohol taluka of Solapur district early on Sunday. Shaikh was part of the notorious Rizwan alias Tipu Pathan gang and wanted in an organised crime case registered this year. Police said Shaikh died of three bullet injuries. He allegedly started shooting at the raiding police team, which fired back. The man's family contested the claim. They maintained it was long since Shaikh had left the world of crime and did not fire at the police. Shaikh's father runs a building material supply shop at Sayyednagar in Hadapsar. Police said Shaikh faced at least 14 criminal cases built up over the last 10 years at Kalepadal, Wanowrie and Kondhwa police stations. The last case was of voluntarily causing grievous hurt with a dangerous weapon registered by the Kalepadal police recently. Earlier this year, Tipu Pathan and his gang attempted to grab land in Kalepadal area. They demanded extortion money of Rs20 lakh to vacate the land. The Kalepadal police registered a case of extortion and criminal trespass against them, while invoking MCOCA charges. Police were looking for Shaikh who was skilfully evading arrest. Late on Saturday night, a Pune city crime branch team reached Lamboti following a tip-off that Shaikh was at his relative's place in the village. Additional commissioner of police (crime) Pankaj Deshmukh said, "Around 3am on Sunday, our team knocked on the doors of the relative's house. A woman opened the door and our team enquired about Shaikh. She said the man was asleep in a room on the first floor. She led the team to the room and Shaikh's wife opened the door. Assistant inspector Madan Kamble told her he was a police officer and had come with his team to arrest her husband. She pushed Kamble." "Shaikh had heard the conversation and started to scream: 'Tum mujhe pakadte kya, aaj tumhara khel khatm karta hoon. Mein tumko zinda nahi chhodunga.' (You will arrest me. Today I will end your game. I will kill you). Saying this, he fired two rounds towards the police personnel, who sustained injuries from the bullet splinters," Deshmukh said. "In a natural course, our team opened fire at him. He fell motionless on the spot. Our team took him to the Solapur civil hospital, where he died under medical attention," he added. The team intimated the local police and initiated a process to register a case of attempt to murder against Shaikh with the Mohol police station in Solapur, he said. "Further investigation is on," Deshmukh said. Shaikh's family claimed that a fortnight ago, Shaikh and his wife had shifted to their relatives' place in Lamboti. He wanted a peaceful life but got involved in a fight three months ago and a case was registered against him again. The police had been looking for him since then. This apart, recently, Shaikh and some members of Tipu gang had robbed Rs600 and a cellphone from a delivery agent after assaulting him when he came to deliver their food in Kalepadal.
