Councillor alleges corruption in Tirunelveli corporation, demands removal of commissioner
TIRUNELVELI: Tirunelveli Corporation council meeting on Thursday turned chaotic after MDMK councillor J Sangeetha staged a walkout, demanding the removal of Commissioner Dr N O Sukhaputra, blaming the latter for allegedly enabling corruption. During the meeting, chaired by Mayor G Ramakrishnan in the presence of Deputy Mayor K R Raju and the commissioner, Sangeetha alleged that a few temporary employees, with no official links to the corporation, have been executing office-related works, including computer operations. "All corporation works are routed only through these individuals, resulting in rampant corruption. When I questioned this, the commissioner began targeting me with retaliatory actions," she said, before walking out of the session, demanding his removal. The situation escalated after several DMK councillors, including M Sudha of Ward 29, also criticised the administration, claiming that no developmental works have taken place in their wards since the mayor assumed office. "Last month, Rs 10 lakh was announced as special funds for each ward, but the resolution is being passed only now. By the time the works begin, the Assembly elections will be announced," said Sudha. Many ruling party councillors joined in voicing their frustration over delays and a lack of transparency. M Revathi, zonal head of Thachanallur, alleged that her zone was ignored in the allotment of the newly procured three backhoe loaders. The deputy mayor, Raju, responded that he was unaware of the purchase of the machines. "Neither the mayor nor the commissioner shares any information with me," he said. Refuting all the allegations, the commissioner told the council that a complaint against Sangeetha was already under investigation. He also alleged that he had received offensive text messages from her phone. "Those messages are also a part of the ongoing inquiry," he said. Several officials stood up in protest, defending the commissioner. Mayor Ramakrishnan said that councillors must not bring unrelated matters into the meeting and warned them of stern action. Statue for historian As part of the meeting, several resolutions were passed, including one to instal a life-size statue of historian Tho Paramasivan near the District Central Library and another to increase the deposit fee for underground drainage connections. While the meeting was in progress, social activist R Siraj staged a sit-in protest with polluted Thamirabarani river water, alleging that sewage had been mixed into the drinking water supplied to the residents.

Shop functions in new bus stand that doesn't have nod in Tirunelveli
TIRUNELVELI: The Tirunelveli Corporation has come under fire for allegedly allowing an individual to operate a shop inside Junction Bus Stand, which was built at a cost of Rs 85.56 crore but has not been opened yet due to lack of environmental clearance (EC). Environmentalists and activists have raised serious concerns over the unauthorised commercial activity. Speaking to TNIE, environmentalist S P Muthuraman said, 'It is illegal to permit commercial operations in a building that lacks approvals. Due to the lack of EC, the majority of the bus stand, including shops on all four floors, has not been opened. Without EC, the corporation cannot float tenders or legally allocate shops. If a shop is currently running, who is collecting the rent?' RTI activist Ferdin Rayan said TANGEDCO had supplied electricity to the building despite the absence of a completion certificate, which is a violation of norms. The delay in securing EC has been traced back to the previous AIADMK regime. When contacted, Assistant Commissioner of Thachanallur zone, Johnson, confirmed that an individual named Kumar had been allowed to run a shop at the site. However, when asked whether the allotment was made through an official tender process, he said he would verify the details. Corporation Commissioner Dr N O Sukhaputra said he had taken note of the matter, while Mayor G Ramakrishnan said that he was not aware about the issue. 'I am in Chennai at the moment. I will visit the bus stand once I return,' he said.

HC clears sewage stations on OSR land in Tirunelveli
Madurai: The Madras high court has cleared the way for the Tirunelveli Corporation to establish sewage pumping stations below ground level on open space reservation (OSR) land, noting they would be odour-free and would not alter the nature of the land.A division bench of Justice G R Swaminathan and Justice B Pugalendhi observed that the special bench deals with cases relating to the protection and restoration of water bodies. Earlier, the court issued a series of directions on a batch of petitions seeking to prevent the discharge of sewage into the Thamirabarani River. When the case was listed for compliance, the authorities submitted that the earlier order of the court could not be complied with since a coordinate bench granted an interim stay for the establishment of sewage pumping stations in OSR land by the Tirunelveli Corporation authorities. After obtaining proper orders, the cases against establishing pumping stations in OSR land were listed before the special judges said the current situation was dire, with sewage being let out in the open, leaking septic tanks polluting groundwater, and sewage lorries dumping waste into water bodies. This has been going on for the last several decades. The photographs present a very sorry state of affairs. "We personally inspected the Thamirabarani and found the situation alarming. Without urgent action, this great river risks turning into a gutter. It is submitted that the UGD scheme is the only scientific solution being the safest method for the disposal of sewage," they accepted the corporation's submission that the pumping stations would be built entirely below ground and occupy only a small portion of OSR land, without compromising its designated purpose. A feasibility study had been carried out, and 27 stations were already operational. Only seven remained stalled due to the earlier court corporation also assured the court that the stations would have automatic odour-control units and decanting facilities, posing no nuisance to residents. The judges observed that the project was conceived in the larger public interest. Once the project is completed, it will considerably check the pollution caused to the court noted that the Supreme Court had barred the use of OSR land as dumping yards, but clarified that the underground stations did not violate this directive. Concluding that the project was in the larger public interest, the bench dismissed the petitions and allowed the remaining stations to be 121112297 413 |
