Tokyo knife attack suspect: Parents scolded him for poor test results

Investigative sources say the suspect in last week's knife attack at a Tokyo subway station said his parents scolded him for poor test results when he was in elementary school. Police searched the home of the 43-year-old suspect, Toda Yoshitaka, in Nagano Prefecture on Monday. Toda is under arrest on suspicion of attacking and injuring a university student at Todaimae metro station in Tokyo last Wednesday. The station is near the campus of the prestigious University of Tokyo. The suspect had told investigators that while in junior high, he became unable to attend school due to pressure from his education-minded parents. He had also said he wanted to show that children will commit crimes if their parents push them too hard. Toda lived alone in Nagano after moving to the prefecture from Tokyo four years ago. But investigators say there are no signs of him working, and he is believed to have had no income.

Tokyo subway stabbing suspect begins telling investigators of motives for attack

The suspect in a stabbing incident at a Tokyo subway station has begun revealing motives for the alleged attack to investigators, citing parental pressure to excel in education. He says he aimed to show that parents who are overzealous about their children's schooling can push them to commit crimes. Tokyo police arrested 43-year-old Toda Yoshitaka on suspicion of assaulting a university student with a knife on the platform at Todaimae Station on the Tokyo Metro Namboku Line on Wednesday evening. The student was injured. Another man was also hurt while detaining Toda. Toda was turned over to public prosecutors on Friday on suspicion of attempted murder and violating a law on the possession of firearms and swords. Investigative sources say the suspect has now admitted to allegations and begun speaking about his motives. He said that when he was in junior high he became unable to attend school and suffered hardships due to pressure from his education-obsessed parents. Toda said he wanted to show people that children can turn delinquent and commit crimes if their parents push them too far. He said he chose Todaimae Station because the name comes from a nearby campus of the prestigious University of Tokyo. He added he thought the choice could easily suggest educational child abuse. Toda said he attacked the victim because the student happened to be nearby.

Tokyo subway stabbing suspect stayed in station for 30 minutes before attack

Investigative sources say a suspect held in a stabbing at a Tokyo subway station remained inside the ticket gates for about 30 minutes before Wednesday's attack. Tokyo police say 43-year-old Toda Yoshitaka is suspected of assaulting a university student with a knife while he was waiting for a train on a platform. The incident occurred just before 7 p.m. at Todaimae Station on the Tokyo Metro Namboku Line. The student fled onto a train. A security camera recorded the suspect chasing the student and slashing him multiple times. The sources say there was no contact between Toda and the student before the attack. Security camera footage shows the suspect entering a toilet and sitting on a bench during the 30 minutes at the station. Police say it also appears that the two men were strangers. One of the train passengers who intervened to restrain the suspect also sustained hand injuries. Police arrested Toda on the spot on suspicion of attempted murder. They are continuing to investigate his motive, but say the suspect is refusing to answer questions.
