Jon Hamm Admits He Would Have Done Anything for Role in 'Top Gun: Maverick'
Jon Hamm had no problem not being the 'star' of the 2022 action film Top Gun: Maverick. On the heels of his massive success on the AMC drama series Mad Men, the actor told GQ magazine that he just wanted to work on projects that were meaningful to him. 'I knew it would be unlikely to have another experience like Mad Men,' Hamm told the outlet in a May 2025 interview. 'And I was okay with that. Some people don't even get the one. So I got one. I got all the awards I needed. [After it ended] I was like, 'I'm good.' I just want to work with people I find compelling.' Hamm also revealed that he did what he had to do to get cast in the 2022 Top Gun sequel. 'That was an interesting one, because there's no mistaking who's the star of that movie,' he said of the film's lead, Tom Cruise. 'I saw the original film when I was 14 years old. So, I would've f---ing made coffee on that set.' 'My agents were like, 'I don't know—it's not a very big part. Do you really want to do this?'' the actor added. 'And I go, 'Dude, it's Top Gun 2. Like, what?' That movie meant a lot to me personally. I told them, 'If you guys f--- this deal, you're all fired.'' In the sequel to the 1986 film Top Gun, Hamm played Vice Admiral Beau 'Cyclone' Simpson opposite Cruise's Captain Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell. The film, released in May 2022, was a massive box office hit, grossing $1.48 billion worldwide, per CNBC. Cruise has not ruled out a third run for the Top Gun franchise. In May 2025, he told the Today Show Australia he had several ideas in the works. 'We're thinking and talking about many different stories and what could we do and what's possible. It took me 35 years to figure out Top Gun: Maverick, so all of these things we're working on, we're discussing Days of Thunder and Top Gun: Maverick,' the actor said.

'Top Gun 3' story 'wasn't hard' to figure out, Christopher McQuarrie teases: 'It's already in the bag'
Cue the Elle Woods "What, like it's hard?" jokes. Fresh off the success of their latest Mission: Impossible team up in The Final Reckoning, Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie are in a good place to get back in the saddle together again with Top Gun 3 — in fact, McQuarrie teases the story is "already in the bag," and it "wasn't hard" to do it. In a recent conversation on Josh Horowitz's Happy Sad Confused podcast, McQuarrie, who co-wrote and produced Top Gun: Maverick, was asked if a third film was "harder to crack" than the long-awaited Maverick, to which he quickly answered, 'No, it's already in the bag.' 'It wasn't hard,' McQuarrie said. 'I thought it would be, and that's a good place to go from as you walk into the room going, 'Come on, what are we going to do?' And [Maverick co-writer] Ehren Kruger pitched something, and I went, 'Mmm actually,' and we had one conversation about it, and the framework is there. So, no, it's not hard to crack. The truth of the matter is, none of these are hard to crack.' He added that it's the emotion behind the story that is the most difficult aspect to get right. "It's as you start to execute it, and as you start to interrogate it, as you start [to think] why these movies are made the way they are,' he added. 'It's not the action, it's not even the level of or intensity of or the scope and scale of the action [or] the engineering around the action, it's none of those things — it's the emotion.' McQuarrie's comments echo ones made by Cruise during an interview earlier in May, when he said both a Top Gun 3 and sequel to his 1990 racing film Days of Thunder were actively being discussed. 'Yeah, we're thinking and talking about many different stories and what could we do and what's possible,' Cruise told Today Show Australia at the time. 'It took me 35 years to figure out Top Gun: Maverick, so all of these things we're working on, we're discussing Days of Thunder and Top Gun: Maverick." A sequel to the 1986 classic, Top Gun: Maverick was the epitome of peak summer blockbuster when it soared into theaters in May 2022. The film — which starred Cruise, Glen Powell, Miles Teller, Jon Hamm, Jennifer Connelly, and more — earned $1.48 billion at the global box office, making it the 12th highest-grossing film of all time. It was also nominated for six Oscars, taking home the award for Best also previously hinted at his return as Hangman while visiting The Kelly Clarkson Show last May. "It's above my pay grade," he admitted when asked if a third film was happening, "but, yeah, I have a feeling there's probably a cockpit with my name on it." Puck first reported in January 2024 that a Top Gun 3 was in the works at Paramount, with Kruger on tap to pen the script, and Maverick director Joseph Kosinski in talks to return as well. Legendary 1980s 'Crocodile Dundee' Actor, 85, Is Unrecognizable in Rare Interview
So many unforgettable movies came out of the 1980s, including Crocodile Dundee, starring Paul Hogan and Linda Koszlowski. The flick featured Hogan as "Mick Dundee," a man who lives in the Australian bush and goes head-to-head with a crocodile, and "Sue Charlton," a reporter from New York who's sent Down Under to interview him. The two ultimately fall in love after Charlton brings Dundee back to the Big Apple, and oddly enough, the actors wound up getting hitched in real life (and later divorced). The movie is truly iconic and unforgettable, especially for some of the classic one-liners. "That's not a knife... THAT's a knife." Just yesterday, Hogan, now 85 years old, sat down with Today Show Australia for a rare interview, and he looks virtually unrecognizable from his Mick Dundee days. Hogan gave the interview to chat about the 40th anniversary of Crocodile Dundee and discuss a new remastered version of it being released. When the host asked if Hogan would ever move back to Australia from the United States, where he now resides, he said he'd do so, "tomorrow," and then explained, "I have business reasons and my son... to stay in the States for now." He also opened up more about his troubled son, Chance, 27. He continued, "He gets a lot of tabloid stuff, but he's a terrible person because he knows they're watching him, so he puts on something for them."In speaking of the 40 years that have passed since Crocodile Dundee was released, Hogan said, "It's 40 years... the last time I heard "shrimp on the barbie" was in America two weeks ago... and the last time I heard "that's not a knife" was three days after that. Hogan also recalled a funny story with two Hollywood icons. He explained, "I was at a dinner with Liz Taylor, and Clint Eastwood was two tables over, and he walked over, leaned over and picked up my table knife, and he said, 'How many times have you heard it?'" Tom Cruise is keeping his engines running even as the Mission: Impossible saga races toward its finish line. In a recent chat with Today Show Australia, Cruise revealed he's 'working on' potential sequels for not just one, but two of his films: 2022's Top Gun: Maverick and the 1990 racing classic, Days of Thunder . 'We're thinking and talking about many different stories and what could we do and what's possible,' Cruise shared. 'It took me 35 years to figure out Top Gun: Maverick , so all of these things we're working on, we're discussing Days of Thunder and Top Gun: Maverick .' And Cruise isn't slowing down. He added, 'There's numerous other films that we're actively working on right now. I'm always shooting a film, prepping a film, posting a film. I just finished a film with Alejandro Iñárritu too, who did The Revenant , and we'll be coming out with that. That was an extraordinary experience and ( Mission: Impossible director Christopher McQuarrie) and I are always working on several different films.' Top Gun: Maverick soared to US$1.49 billion at the global box office, while Days of Thunder – the film that first put Cruise behind the wheel as NASCAR's Cole Trickle – earned US$157 million worldwide back in the day.
