Federal election polls now closed in N.L., as ballot count begins
CBC N.L. will update this story as election results come in
Newfoundland and Labrador's first poll has been reported.
The first results from the federal election come from Central Newfoundland, where Conservative incumbent Clifford Small took an early 78-vote lead.
Polls closed at 8:30 p.m. NT. The province's seven federal ridings will be the first in the country to begin tallying votes for Canada's next government.
Many of candidates seen on ballots across the province Monday were entering the federal political race for the first time.
"It's my right to do it, and I want my voice heard," Todd Walters, a voter in Clarenville, said Monday. "Every time you get the chance to put your two cents in, I like to do it."
Other voters who spoke with CBC News said that while they were voting for a local candidate, deciding a new federal leader also drove their decision — a race between Conservative Pierre Poilievre, Liberal Mark Carney and Jagmeet Singh of the NDP.
CBC Newfoundland and Labrador will be updating this story throughout Monday night and Tuesday morning with up-to-date information on Newfoundland and Labrador's riding races.
