Canada wins first-ever mixed 4x100m relay gold at 2025 World Athletics Relays
GUANGZHOU, May 11 (Xinhua) -- Team Canada sprinted into the history books on Sunday, capturing the inaugural gold medal in the mixed 4x100m relay at the 2025 World Athletics Relays here with a season-best 40.30 seconds. The mixed 4x100m relay is a newly trialed event by World Athletics, and Guangzhou marked its debut on the global stage. Following a woman-woman-man-man running order, teams faced the unique challenge of baton exchanges between women and men at top speed. Records for the event will be officially recognized starting 1 January 2026. Canada gained a decisive edge during the third leg when Duan Asemota powered through the curve and handed off in the lead. The team ultimately held off Jamaica by 0.14 seconds to claim gold, while Britain finished third in 40.88 seconds. "It's really exciting whenever you're the first to do anything. It's something that's never gonna be changed," said Asemota. "I'm the one who bridges the guys and girls. So for me, I think the biggest challenge of this new event was the hand height-sometimes we're a little bit higher than the girls. But once we sorted that out in training, everything else came together pretty great. The key is to trust your team." Sprinters also embraced the concept of the new relay format. Chen Guanfeng, who ran for the seventh-placed Chinese team, said: "This event creates more opportunities for sprinters to compete internationally. We were concerned at first about the speed gap between male and female athletes, but with practice, we've found good synergy." "There's a saying in China," Chen added with a smile, "'When men and women work together, the workload feels lighter.' I think this event shows the world once again that what men can do, women can also do-and we can compete side by side." In other finals, the United States claimed the mixed 4x400m relay title, clocking a championship record of 3:09.54. Britain won the women's 4x100m gold with a time of 42.21 seconds. The men's 4x100m title went to South Africa, who finished with a world-leading time of 37.61 seconds. In the 4x400m relay, Spain surged to victory in the women's category with a national record of 3:24.13, and South Africa took men's gold with a world-leading time of 2:57.50. The World Athletics Relays also serve as a key qualifier for relay events at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, featuring six events including men's, women's, and mixed 4x100m and 4x400m formats. In five of the six events (excluding the mixed 4x100m), the top 14 teams will secure spots at Tokyo 2025. Eight teams in each event had already booked their tickets during Saturday's round 1. On Sunday, six more spots were up for grabs. In the men's 4x400m relay, the United States, which had failed to qualify directly the previous day due to a dropped baton, bounced back in 2:58.68 to earn its place in Tokyo. Host nation China had a strong showing as well, setting a national record of 3:13.39 in the mixed 4x400m relay to qualify for the World Championships. The Chinese teams also secured berths in the men's 4x400m relay, and both the men's and women's 4x100m relays.

GUANGZHOU, China, May 10 (Xinhua) -- Team China set a new national record in the men's 4x400m in 3 minutes and 1.87 seconds at the 2025 World Athletics Relays here on Saturday in rain. The competition serves as a main qualification for relay events at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, features 6 events including men's, women's and mixed 4x100m and 4x400m. The top 14 teams in each event (except for mixed 4x100m) will earn berths for Tokyo 2025. According to the rules, the top 14 teams in men's and women's 4x100m, 4x400m and mixed 4x400m consist of 8 spots booked Saturday and 6 spots Sunday. In each event, the top 2 teams in each of the 4 heats qualified for the finals and Tokyo 2025, with the remaining teams competing for 6 other spots per event in the second qualification round Sunday. The Chinese squad for the men's 4x400m, composed of rookies Liang Baotang, Li Yiqing, Zhang Qining and Fu Haoran, finished second in Heat 1, breaking the national record, reaching the final and qualifying for Tokyo 2025. "My mind was blank when I was running, just to do my best," said the fourth leg Fu, who caught up to the second place by surpassing a Spainish runner. Mixed 4x100m is a newly-introduced event for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, yet was not included in Tokyo 2025. In the event's global debut, Team Canada finished first in qualification with a time of 40.90 seconds. The Chinese quartet of Huang Shuping, Kong Lingyao, Chen Jinfeng and Chen Guanfeng qualified for the final by clocking 41.30 seconds. "It's interesting to mix and mingle boys and girls in 4X100m. We are really excited and happy for the introduction of the event," said Chen Guanfeng. Veteran Xie Zhenye led Team China in men's 4x100m, and the squad clocked 38.30 seconds to finish third in Heat 4, only 0.005 seconds shy of Team Italy, who finished second in the heat. South Africa and Japan set a new world-leading mark with 37.84 seconds. Drama unfolded in the women's 4x100m as China's third-leg runner Liang Xiaojing and fourth-leg runner Ge Manqi made a mistake in passing the baton, finishing sixth in the heat. Elsewhere, the United States made a world-leading mark of 3 minutes and 11.37 seconds in the mixed 4x400m. Spain set a new women's 4x100m national record of 42.18 seconds.

Qatar aiming to qualify for World Athletics Relays
Tribune News Network Guangzhou (China) Qatar's men's 4x400m team failed to qualify for the final at the World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou, China on Satuday. The quartet of Abderrahman Samba, Bassem Hemeida, Ashraf Hussen Osman and Ammar Ismail Yahia Ibrahim finished third in the heats, missing out on a chance to secure early qualification for the World Championships, set to be held in Tokyo this September. While Qatar missed their first opportunity to qualify, they will have a second shot on Sunday. All non-finalists will compete in additional qualifying heats, with the top two from each of the three groups securing World Championships berths. In case they fail to secure Tokyo 2025 spots from Guangzhou, Qatar can also qualify based on their position in the top performance lists during the qualification window, which runs from February 25, 2024, to August 24, 2025. Only two teams from the top lists from each event will make the cut. On the opening day in Guangzhou, quotas were on offer to the top two teams in each heat in every relay event (except the 4x100m). The two teams also made the finals and will race for World Championships lane seeding and medals on Sunday. It was a thrilling three-way battle between Belgium, Great Britain and Qatar in heat 3. The three teams were within one stride of each other going into the final leg. Qatar's Ammar Ismail Yahia Ibrahim tried to force his way between Belgium's Alexander Doom and Britain's Charlie Dobson but was ultimately unsuccessful. The latter two ran side by side down the home straight as Belgium took the win in 3:01.35, 0.03 ahead of Britain. Qatar finished in 3:03.97.
