Newark Airport Has Another Alarming Incident

The Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey has been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons this month, and it faced another alarming incident on Monday. The major airport servicing New York City has faced a number of equipment and staffing issues this month, resulting in many delays and cancellations. The issues got so bad that NBC News correspondent Tom Costello quoted an anonymous air traffic controller earlier this month who called the airport "not safe." 'It is not safe. It is not a safe situation right now for the flying public,' Costello reported. "Really an incredible statement, unsolicited," Costello added about the source's comments. "He just said that to me, and separately: 'Don't fly into Newark. Avoid Newark at all costs.'' While the U.S. government has stepped in to try to remedy the issues, reducing incoming and outgoing air traffic at the airport, the Newark Airport dealt with yet another concerning incident on Monday. According to CBS News, the Federal Aviation Administration has launched an investigation into a brief radio system outage at the Philadelphia air traffic control center responsible for handling flights at Newark Liberty International Airport on Monday. The control center lost radio frequencies for two seconds at around 11:35 a.m. local time on Monday, the FAA said, marking the fourth incident of this kind to take place at Newark Airport since April 28 amid consistent equipment and staffing issues. Obviously, it has been a concerning several weeks for one of the country's busiest airports.

Newark Airport Warns of Possible Measles Exposure

The Newark Liberty International Airport has faced major issues recently, with NBC News correspondent Tom Costello citing an anonymous air traffic controller who called the airport "not safe" amid mass delays and cancellations. Now, the airport is facing another issue. This week, the New Jersey Department of Health issued a warning of possible measles exposure in the Newark Liberty International Airport after a case was confirmed in an individual who spent several hours in the airport on May 12. The health officials warned that anyone who was in Newark Airport's Terminal B between 12:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Monday, May 12, might have been exposed to measles, according to CBS News. Those who have been exposed to measles could develop symptoms of the disease as late as June 2. Measles symptoms can include high fever, cough, runny nose, red and watery eyes, and a rash that first appears on the face and spreads down the body. The NJDOH has urged parents and caregivers to be aware of symptoms and to stay up to date with the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccination to prevent the "highly contagious virus" from spreading. The health organization reminded everyone that the most effective way to prevent measles is to receive two doses of the MMR vaccine and warned that the highest-risk group includes unvaccinated and partially vaccinated individuals.

BREAKING NEWS Disaster narrowly avoided at major US airport as tech outage leaves air traffic control in dark

Radar screens at New Jersey 's Newark Liberty International Airport went dark early Friday morning during a close call that narrowly avoided becoming the nation's latest midair tragedy. The momentary power outage took place at 3:55am ET, when air traffic was luckily very light. It's the second radar blackout in two weeks at Newark. Another power outage struck the airport's air traffic control tower on April 28, sending computer screens dark for 60 to 90 seconds. Days after the April 28 incident, an air traffic controller at Newark Airport warned flyers to stay away from the New Jersey airport. The unnamed source told NBC's Tom Costello: 'It's not a safe situation for the flying public!' 'Don't fly into Newark. Avoid Newark at all costs,' the air traffic controller added. According to Flightaware, there were already 66 cancellations and 208 flight delays reported at Newark as of 11am ET. This is a developing story. More updates to come.
