Storm knocks large tree onto house in Smyrna

A terrified family rushed out of a home in the middle of the night when a large tree crashed onto it. Channel 2's Tom Regan was at the home on Crowe Drive as cleanup was underway Wednesday. They had to bring in a crane to lift the tree off the house. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] It was a rude awakening for the family inside. Powerful winds and driving rain sent the giant tree crashing onto the house in the early morning hours. Leland Mahone said he was asleep. 'I heard a lot of water, thundering, and my mom was banging on the door, 'Wake up, wake up, we've got to go!' Because she said heard the tree,' he said. The teen said he heard a loud creaking in the walls of the bathroom nearby. They feared the large tree was about to slice the roof and crush their house. It was time to get out. Considering the size of the tree and way it fell, it's surprising it didn't cause more damage to the family's home. 'There's definitely some roof shingles, the gutters, the whole gutter fell of the facia,' said Sean Bundy, Tomahawk Tree Service. 'It didn't go through the roof, luckily. They said there's not holes in the roof, through the home or anything.' Leland says he's glad they decided to evacuate, just in case. 'Yeah, I was pretty scared,' he said. 'I didn't want all my stuff to get wet.' Because of the enormous size of the toppled tree and its position, crews had to trim back limbs of nearby trees to make room for the crane to lift it from the roof. Despite the damage in this area and nearby, there were few reports of power outages. [SIGN UP: WSB-TV Daily Headlines Newsletter]

Jail records currently show Brown is being held without bond in the Douglas County Jail on a public indecency charge. Police found Centeria Fields and Stanley Pratt dead in the apartment on Tuskegee Street when they responded Dec. 18, 2021. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] 'I was in the kitchen in the corner of the house, the house kind of shook and the photos fell off the walls and stuff.' said Mason Bishop Bishop says he was housesitting while his parents were away to see the Kentucky Derby. A giant tree fell onto this mother's car, crushing the vehicle. It also damaged the side of the house. 'There's a hole in my roof right now. In the attic roof.' said Bishop The Floyd County EMA director told Channel 2's Tom Regan that seven homes were damaged by trees and two cars. The storm also took down powerlines. One woman left her house to run an errand, when a tree crashed onto the roof with her grandfather inside. 'My grandfather didn't have time to take cover. My dogs were trapped inside. I couldn't get in to make sure they were alright. It was scary.' said Chelsey Newborn. Newborn says her grandfather wasn't injured. County officials say several roads that were blocked by fallen trees have reopened and about two dozen homes and business are without power. [SIGN UP: WSB-TV Daily Headlines Newsletter]

Narcan now widely available in Georgia, free or discounted at some locations

The overdose reversing drug Narcan is now widely available in Georgia. In some places, the potentially life-saving drug is even offered at a discounted price or for free. Channel 2's Tom Regan spoke to a local pharmacist in Little Five Points who pushed to make the drug more accessible. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says about 70% of overdose deaths in Georgia are caused by fentanyl. But the now wide availability of Narcan is helping to reduce those deaths. TRENDING STORIES: Video of fight involving teacher at DeKalb school being used in investigation 2 women stole nearly $500,000 from their former job, Dunwoody police say 24 travelers banned after massive fight breaks out at Carnival Cruise Line terminal Pharmacist Ira Katz told Channel 2 Action News that he knows firsthand the drug's ability to bring people back from the brink of death. 'It's everywhere now and it should be,' Katz said. 'If I had my way, everyone should have Narcan.' Katz has been one of the biggest proponents of Narcan access in Georgia, pushing local and state leaders to make it available in schools, libraries and other public places. 'This past weekend, we had a big Inman Park Festival. I brought it down to the first aid station to make sure they have Narcan,' Katz said. 'They did not.' Katz said over the years, he and his staff have rushed to their parking lot or other places nearby to give nasal Narcan to people who have overdosed. 'I knocked on the window, no response. The door wasn't locked so I opened the door,' Katz recounted. 'I checked his pulse, very faint.' He gave the man two doses of nasal Narcan, saving his life. 'The parents came back the next day to get the car and they said, the parent said 'what do I owe you?'' Katz said. 'I said you don't owe me anything.' Katz gives Narcan away for free. He charges a nominal amount for fentanyl test strips, which can detect the deadly drug in other street drugs. The pharmacist credited Gov. Brian Kemp for legalizing distribution of the strips in 202. 'In just a few minutes, you can get the results on whether it is positive or negative for fentanyl,' he said. Katz has even given Narcan to police and fire departments and urges parents to get it just in case a loved one or someone they know has overdosed. 'I get it for free and I give it away for free,' Katz said. Katz and other harm reduction advocates are worried that government grants to provide Narcan at a lower cost, or for free, could soon dry up. [SIGN UP: WSB-TV Daily Headlines Newsletter]
