FDA: Popular Chocolate Bars Recalled Over ‘Small Stone' Contamination
Tony's Chocolonely is recalling seven different lots of chocolate bars after receiving complaints from customers who say they found stones in the candy. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that Tony's Chocolonely Inc. has issued a voluntary recall of seven lots of their candies in both the U.S and Canada. The company shared the news on its website on April 1, 2025, after it said that it received 12 separate reports from outside the U.S. and Canada that customers claimed their chocolate bars contained small stones. If you believe you have impacted product, do not eat it. Tony's Chocolonely Inc. believes that the stones were a byproduct of the almond harvesting process. 'A limited number of consumers have reported finding small stones in the product not filtered during third-party almond harvesting and the almond processing process,' the company shared in a statement posted to its website. 'Whilst the chance of any individual product being affected is low, and we have not yet received any complaints in North America, we have decided to take this step in order to ensure the safety and satisfaction of Tony's Chocolonely consumers in an abundance of caution.' According to the FDA statement, which was shared just one day after the company's announcement, the recall involves two different products, including Tony's Chocolonely Everything Bar (which contains pretzel, almond nougat, caramel, and sea salt), featuring the following lot codes, best by dates, and UPCs: 4327, 22-Nov-25, 850011828564 4330, 25-Nove-25, 850011828564 4331, 26-Nov-25, 850011828564 M4331, 26-Nov-25, 850032676441 And, Tony's Chocolonely Dark Chocolate Almond Sea Salt, featuring the following lot codes, best by dates, and UPCs: 163094, 2-Apr-26, 858010005641 162634, 28-Feb-26, 858010005641 M162634, 28-Feb-26, 850011828908 These chocolate bars were sold throughout the U.S., both in brick-and-mortar stores as well as online through Tony's Chocolonely website and Amazon. The distribution dates range from Feb. 7, 2025 to Mar. 24, 2025. The company is advising customers who have the products at home to avoid eating the candy bars. Instead, Tony's Chocolonely is asking customers to return the chocolate bars to the place where they were purchased so that they can get a refund or replacement. Those not interested in a refund are asked to dispose of the chocolate bars instead. It's a nice thing to treat yourself to a chocolate bar once in a while, but according to a new Food & Drug Administration (FDA) recall alert, some people who bought bars of Tony's Chocolonely found an extra "treat" inside that nobody should be eating. The recall affecting the popular chocolate bar brand -- which you might recognize from its brightly colored wrappers -- was issued by the FDA on April 2, 2025, and affects two Tony's Chocolonely products: the Tony's Chocolonely Everything Bar and Dark Almond Sea Salt Bar. The voluntary recall was initiated after 12 people reported the presence of small stones in their chocolate bars, which are supposedly left over from improper filtering that happened during the almond harvesting and cleaning processes. Chocolate bars purchased through online retailers like Amazon are also eligible for a refund or replacement. So far, no injuries or complications tied to the small stones found in the recalled bars have been reported. Small objects that are not edible, but are not too large or sharp, often pass through the digestive system without causing serious issues. So, this isn't likely to become one of the worst food recalls in U.S. history. However, you should not risk consuming any of these recalled chocolate products, and if you have eaten some and are experiencing side effects such as pain and cramping or nausea, contact a health professional immediately.
