Nissan Is Working On A Cheap Sedan For The Masses
Embattled automotive giant Nissan is facing a tough time. The company has been forced to lay off thousands of workers and cancel plans for increased battery production. Things are going so badly that some question how long Nissan can survive. But with new CEO Ivan Espinosa at the helm and promising new vehicles, hope endures, and one of those new vehicles has just been unofficially revealed through patent images discovered by Top Gear Philippines. The images were filed in China in September last year and officially registered exactly one month ago, suggesting that the sedan they depict will make production. The boomerang-shaped headlights remind us of some Hyundai and Kia designs, while the lightbar at the rear calls to mind the Dodge Charger and Durango. And while we can't see much detail in these images, the fastback shape indicates that this vehicle may play loose with the term "sedan," likely appearing with a liftback tailgate like the latest Audi A5. This gives the vehicle the style and grace of a sedan with the cargo-carrying and loading abilities of a hatchback. More than that, we cannot be sure of yet, but this design conforms to the new language heralded by last year's Beijing Auto Show concepts, which included a sedan with similar looks to this. That Nissan Evo concept was announced as a plug-in hybrid, and it's likely that this new sedan would also avoid going all-electric. Since we don't know exactly what car this previews, it's difficult to estimate the price. Its size is unclear from this filing, and both the Altima and the Sentra could do with a makeover. A new Maxima could also make a certain amount of sense, especially with the upcoming Leaf crossover filling the needs of those who need a taller vehicle. Until we hear something directly from Nissan, though, it's too soon to get excited. The fact that the patent images were filed in China could mean that the car will never reach America, especially if it ends up being produced there, but it also means this shouldn't carry an exorbitant price, and the U.S. market is in dire need of more affordable cars. This Might Be Nissan's New Sedan Before You're Supposed to See It
Update: This story has been updated with more information regarding Nissan's EV concept in China. Nissan has a massive product onslaught planned over the next few years. Alongside the latest Kicks and the updated Murano SUVs, the Japanese automaker has a new Leaf coming to the US as early as next year. But if these patent filings are any indication, there could be even more products on the horizon—and soon. Nissan recently filed a patent with the World Intellectual Property Organization, as uncovered by Top Gear Philippines . The patent was filed in China on September 14 of last year and officially registered on May 9, 2025. It shows an updated Nissan sedan with the brand's latest design language. Nissan Patent Images Photo by: WIPO It's unclear whether these images show a new Sentra, Altima, Maxima, or something different entirely. The photos look nearly identical to the Evo concept from earlier last year, though they weren't officially filed until after that concept debuted. It could potentially be a production version of that vehicle. The patent also bears a similar resemblance to the Chinese Nissan N7 , but that sedan is larger and has more distinct cues. If this is a US-bound model, our best guess would be all-new Sentra or a revived Altima, which may be discontinued in the US after this year. The front fascia bears the automaker's new angular headlight treatment, which we've seen on the upcoming Leaf and a few of Nissan's previous concepts. The back end, meanwhile, has a slim light bar that encircles the trunk lid and stretches out to the rear bumper on either side. The profile almost makes it look like a fastback, which leads us to believe this is a mid-size sedan as opposed to a compact. We've seen spy photos of Nissan testing a sedan prototype in Michigan that looks nearly identical to the patent images pictured here. But even in those spy photos, it's difficult to tell if the car in question is the smaller Sentra or the mid-size Altima. Our spy photographers believe it could be the Sentra, but slightly larger than the current-generation model. Photo by: WIPO Photo by: WIPO In those spy photos, we also see an exhaust system, which means Nissan won't go full EV for its next sedan. Our best guess is a new hybrid system, potentially the turbocharged 1.5-liter hybrid unit from the plug-in-hybrid Frontier —which won't come to the US. That powertrain delivers 402 horsepower in the plug-in truck, but a detuned version of that could make sense in the smaller Sentra or Altima sedans. If this is indeed a new Sentra, don't expect to see a production version before 2027. The current model is still on sale in the US, and it likely won't change for 2026. With the Altima rumored to be discontinued after this year, we could see a new version of that sedan before the end of 2025. If we're lucky. Apparent production Toyota Land Cruiser FJ emerges in new patent
Indirect successor to the FJ will reportedly debut in the fourth quarter of the year, suggestively at the Tokyo Mobility Show in October. Only now uncovered, the apparent patent images reportedly shows what the production Toyota Land Cruiser FJ will look like. Image: Top Gear Philippines Sporadically hinted at since the emergence of an outline teaser image at the unveiling of the new Land Cruiser Prado two years ago, the uncovering of a single patent image in Thailand has suggested the unveiling of the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ to happening in 2025 after all. From FT-4X to Compact Cruiser Teased as far back as the New York International Auto Show in 2017 as the FT-4X Concept, the indirect successor to the FJ Cruiser morphed into a second concept called the Compact Cruiser EV four years ago. Initially reported as being based on the unibody TNGA-K platform, and subsequently on the older IMV 0 that underpins the Hilux Champ/Hilux Rangga, no definitive details have emerged so far. ALSO READ: REPORT: Toyota tipped to debut 'junior' Land Cruiser FJ in 2025 According to the mentioned image, obtained by Top Gear Philippines over the weekend, the production 'junior' Land Cruiser will appear as is and, reportedly, debut around October, a month that coincides with the Tokyo Mobility Show. More reminiscent of the Compact Cruiser EV, which formed part of Toyota's planned 16 electric vehicle roll-out, the blocky exterior incorporates elements from both the original FJ Cruiser and Prado, as well as the Land Cruiser 70-series. Toyota Compact Cruiser EV will seemingly become the production Land Cruiser FJ later this year. Image: Toyota Magazine UK Going further, the publication states that, unlike the Compact Cruiser EV, the Land Cruiser FJ will inherent the same engines as the Hilux Champ/Hilux Rangga, namely the 2.4 GD-6 turbodiesel and the normally aspirated 2.7-litre petrol. For the moment, it remains unknown as to whether the FJ will have the option four-wheel-drive as the Hilux Champ/Hilux Rangga is exclusively rear-wheel-driven. More soon Likely to be positioned above the all-new RAV4, a hybrid variant has also been mulled, although at present, no other details are unknown and are therefore open to speculation. Given the uncovering of the images and patent, submitted in Thailand at the end of January this year, don't be surprised if official images or even spy shots do emerge within the next few months.
