Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run makes its move through Los Angeles County

Law enforcement agencies throughout Southern California are carrying the torch ahead of the Special Olympics Summer Games, stretching from San Diego to Los Angeles – ending in Long Beach where the June 6-8 games take place. The Southern California leg of the torch run began May 27 in San Diego, and on Monday, the Los Angeles tour began with LAPD South Traffic athletes in Wilmington. In 2024, the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR), Southern California raised $1.2 million with over 200 law enforcement agencies participating. Funds raised support Special Olympics athletes with equipment and training for the Special Olympics. On Monday, law enforcement relay teams will take turns carrying the "Flame of Hope" through the Los Angeles County communities of San Pedro, Lomita, Palos Verdes, South Bay beach cities, through LAX, and into Culver City. The relay continues Tuesday morning with the LAPD Wilshire division, picks up Wednesday through North Hollywood and Burbank, and continues Thursday through Hollywood and West LA. On Friday, LASD Compton is one of the agencies carrying the torch until the Long Beach PD carries it to the final destination at the Cal State Long Beach Pyramid. This weekend's competition consists of hundreds of local Special Olympics athletes competing in track and field, basketball, flag football and more. Opening ceremonies take place at Walter Pyramid, June 6 at 6:30 p.m.

SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) — The Special Olympics Rhode Island Summer Games continued on Saturday at URI's Kingston campus. Today's events include bowling, powerlifting, track & field, and soccer. On Friday morning, bowling and track & field events were held, before the Torch Run ceremony was held at the R.I. State House and followed by the Opening Ceremony at Meade Stadium. On Sunday, the games continue at St. George's School in Middletown with swimming events. SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) — Special Olympians from around Rhode Island will show off their skills this coming weekend as they compete in the annual Summer Games. This year's games will be held May 30-31 at URI's Kingston campus and June 1 at St. George's School in Middletown. It's Special Olympics Rhode Island's biggest sporting event of the year. Wednesday was 'Truck Day,' the unofficial start of the Summer Games. A trailer loaded up with equipment and supplies left the Special Olympics RI headquarters in Smithfield and was escorted by police down to URI. The Torch Run ceremony at the R.I. State House starts at 1 p.m. on Friday, May 30, followed by the Opening Ceremony at Meade Stadium at 7 p.m. However, competition begins earlier in the day with bowling at 10 a.m. Other events include track and field, soccer, powerlifting and swimming. OPP Torch Relay in Essex County raises awareness for Special Olympics

The Ontario Law Enforcement Torch Run made its way through Essex County. The Ontario Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) toured Essex County on Thursday. Special Olympians, police officers, and supporters ran, walked, and biked through Lakeshore, Tecumseh, Lasalle, Leamington, Kingsville – ending in Essex. The event is the largest public awareness fundraiser for the Special Olympics. The torch run has raised over $74 million across Canada since it began. The Special Olympics has supported and promoted respect, acceptance, inclusion, and dignity for people with intellectual disabilities through sport for over 50 years. Jim Chauvin is an OPP officer who has participated in fundraisers in support of the Special Olympics for many years. 'We do several events throughout the year – [like the] Polar Plunge,' said Chauvin. 'We do a torch run as we've done in the past. And we host different events throughout the year, just fundraisers. The public can even go directly to Special Olympics Ontario website, and they can make donations there as well.'

PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — Law enforcement across the state were chilling on top of coffee shops Friday morning for a good cause. The 22nd annual Cop on a Rooftop event took place at more than 375 Dunkin' Donuts locations across Illinois from 5 a.m. to noon. Lieutenant Bill Calbow shared why there were officers standing on the roof of different Dunkin' Donuts. '[It's to] get them fired up that we're raising money out here,' Calbow said, 'just drawing attention. We've had a lot of people honking their horns and waving at us in support.' Air Force Viper team launching from Peoria for air show this week People could donate any amount of money for a free donut coupon, and if you donated $10 or more, you would get a coupon for a free medium hot or iced coffee. This is to raise money for the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Illinois, which according to the event's website is the largest public awareness and fundraising movement benefitting Special Olympics. Calbow explained why Dunkin' specifically is the sponsor of this event. 'They've been really great with working with the Special Olympics and they're a proud supporter of the Special Olympics,' he said. 'Cops love donuts, too, and so what better than Dunkin?' Since the program started, more than $9.8 million dollars for Special Olympics Illinois. Dunkin administration is also donating $15,000 dollars themself to the Special Olympics.
