Road closures set to impact Cwmbran and Pontypool in June

Torfaen County Borough Council has announced the closures, which will affect Wentslade Road, Leigh Road, and Bowleaze. The works are necessary for the replacement of wooden poles and for cherry picker operations. Starting on Monday, June 9, Wentslade Road, Tranch, Pontypool, will be closed from 9am to 5pm. An alternative route has been arranged, directing traffic along Wentslade Road, Parkes Lane, and Tranch Road. Access will be maintained for residents and emergency services "as far as is reasonably practicable". On the same day, Leigh Road, Trevethin, Pontypool, will also be closed between 9am and 5pm. The alternative route for this closure is along Leigh Road, Channel View, Park Road, Riverside, Osborne Road, George Street, and Porthmawr Road. Again, access will be maintained for residents and emergency services "as far as is reasonably practicable". In Cwmbran, Bowleaze, Greenmeadow, will be closed from Wednesday, June 4, to Friday, June 6. As the road is a residential cul-de-sac, no alternative route is available, but access will be maintained for residents and emergency services where possible. Each road closure has been authorised under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 and is necessary for works to be carried out on or near the roads. The council has stated that the closures may be extended if necessary, but will not exceed a period of 18 months. The council has apologised for any inconvenience these closures may cause and is urging motorists to plan their journeys accordingly. It is recommended that road users allow extra time for their journeys and consider alternative routes where possible. The council's decision to carry out these works reflects an ongoing commitment to maintaining and improving the county's infrastructure. The replacement of wooden poles is expected to improve the reliability and safety of services in the area. The cherry picker works being carried out in Bowleaze are also part of essential maintenance. The council has assured residents and businesses affected by these works that everything possible is being done to minimise disruption. This includes carrying out works during off-peak hours where possible and ensuring access is maintained for residents and emergency services. Anyone with concerns or queries about the road closures is advised to contact the council directly. Torfaen County Borough Council can be contacted via their website or by phone during normal office hours. Updates on the progress of the works will be posted on the council's website and social media channels.

Torfaen council asking for ideas on next year's scrutiny

Torfaen County Borough Council's overview and scrutiny committees examine a range of topics every year. This is in order to make sure council decisions are being held to account. The committees have looked at issues this year like reducing homelessness, improving school attendance, and improving employability services. Now, they want the public to help them. They are asking members of the public to submit ideas so they can be taken into account next year. Ideas need to be submitted on the Get Involved Torfaen democracy hub by June 18, 2025. All the ideas from the public will be considered and reviewed. The committees will then put together a programme of what to scrutinise. This information will be published on the Torfaen County Borough Council website. Councillor Rose Seabourne, the chair of the education overview and scrutiny committee, said: "I would encourage anyone interested in finding out more about the many ways that you can get involved in local democracy to visit the new democracy hub on Get Involved Torfaen. "It's full of information about how to attend meetings, how to submit information, ask questions and more. "The committees will welcome your suggestions on topics you think they should focus on. "Please add your ideas no later than 18th June, 2025." The five committees are: economy and environment, education, adults and communities, children and families, and cross cutting resources and business.
