‘Horrible day' – Brit tennis star reveals rugby ace boyfriend's rejection caused her dismal form before French Open

JODIE BURRAGE admits that painful Lions rejection for rugby boyfriend Ben White ruined her clay-court preparations. The world No.169 went through an emotional wringer as she waited to find out if Toulon ace White would be part of Andy Farrell's 38-man squad for the trip to Australia. 6 6 6 Scrum-half White, 26, missed out – the travelling contingent was announced on May 8 at an glitzy presentation at the O2 Arena – but is likely to go on Scotland 's summer tour against the Maori All Blacks, Fiji and Samoa. In the build-up to that decision, as the best rugby stars from Britain and Ireland waited to discover their fate, Burrage 's form on clay nosedived on court – she lost three out of four matches, the last one in straight sets to world No.201 Mai Hontama. Burrage – who makes her French Open main debut next week – said: 'It has been tough for him, the last few weeks, with certain decisions. But he's doing the best he can. 'Is he on standby for the Lions? They don't hear. They don't get told anything. It was a horrible day. 'It's madness how they don't hear anything. I didn't realise how it would be. Sat there watching (on TV) wasn't the nicest experience. 'He has done the best he can. He has responded to it better than I probably would. 'You would hopefully imagine that he'd be next if anything was to happen. 'I want the best for him. That's the ultimate dream for any 15s rugby player. We'll see. 6 6 'It's not his last opportunity to get into that team either. He'll keep working hard. He'll get there at some point. 'The 'not knowing' was probably the worst. Now the decision has been made and he's got his goals and he can move on from that, he's been a lot better. We'll be fine from now – no more distractions! 'To be fair this was probably the only time anything's ever distracted me (on court). Professional sport is so emotional, up-and-down, and when you put two together, it's carnage. 'You've got to take the highs with the lows so he'll be fine. We're doing fine!' Burrage – who faces American Danielle Collins in round one – was comforted by White when she got cruelly injured in her last practice session before heading to the 2024 Roland Garros tournament. Scans showed Burrage, 25, suffered a 'near full rupture' of one of her ankle ligaments after attempting to retrieve a Katie Boulter drop-shot. The Surrey star -- who has slumped to British No.7 spot due to her injury layoff -- said: 'I'm happy to be here. Didn't make it last year. 'I got a reminder on my phone that this time last year was when I did my ankle in prep for the French. My flight was the next day or two days later when it happened. 'I didn't have an amazing practice day here on Friday. 'So, I needed that reminder that I was sat on my couch with my foot in a boot and on crutches. I don't take where I am for granted. 'But I practised with Emma Raducanu and she hit a drop-shot, exactly the same thing, and I didn't run for that. I didn't want to take that risk again! 'Happy to step on the court now. Hopefully I can do some damage.'

Former Bok Cornal Hendricks' memorial service

The memorial service for former Springbok winger Cornal Hendricks will take place at the Boland Stadium in Wellington on Thursday. Hendricks died last Wednesday after suffering a hear attack. He was 37. Obituary | Cornal Hendricks may have died young, but he never took no for an answer in life The service starts at 12:00. Hendricks played 12 Tests for the Springboks between 2014 and 2015 and scored five tries. Hendricks' Test career was cut short when he was diagnosed with a heart ailment in late 2015. He had signed a two-year deal with the Stormers before the condition prevented him from playing for the Cape franchise. A deal with French side Toulon also fell through and he was forced to retire from rugby aged 27. However, after receiving a second medical opinion, he made a comeback for the Bulls in 2019 and played for the Pretoria franchise until 2024, before moving back to Boland where he started his professional career in 2008. He represented the Blitzboks from 2011 to 2014, before signing for the Cheetahs where he became a Springbok. Go to top

Where are the floods in Southern France and is it safe to travel to Lower Normandy, Nice and the French Riviera?

SEVERE floods have hit the French Riviera, causing extensive damage in the area. Here, we unpack everything that's happened so far - and if it's currently safe to visit France. 7 7 7 Where are the floods in France? Météo-France has issued a moderate flood and rain warning for Nice, Marseilles, and the surrounding region - which will be in effect until at least Thursday, 22 May, 2025. Previously, there were also emergency warnings for the Var region - where the catastrophic damage occurred at Le Lavandou and neighbouring Cavaliere for both flooding and thunderstorms, but this has since been downgraded to a moderate warming. Moving towards the capital, there is a moderate flood warning in place five French departments directly south and west of Paris in Lower Normandy; specifically Calvados, Eure-et-Loir, Loiret, Manche, and Orne. What has the impact of the floods been? The rapid rainfall and storms taking place since Monday, 19 May, 2025, have resulted in flooded roads, water supply cutoffs, and power outages across southern France, including the French Riviera. More than 500 calls have been made to emergency services and at least three people have died so far according to local authorities in Le Lavandou, a popular holiday resort town 18 miles east of St Tropez. 7 Two of those who died were an elderly couple swept away while trying to escape their home, who were "surprised by the very rapid rise in water levels". the Toulon public prosecutor said to the BBC. After being hit with 250mm of rain in just one hour, several hundred emergency rescuers have been sent to the area, and more than 600 homes have been left without electricity. The south of France faced a similar severe flood in late 2019, and was hit by four months worth of rain in just 12 hours during 2020's Storm Alex. 7 How will the floods affect my trip to France? Flights with Air France, British Airways, EasyJet, and RyanAir between the UK and Nice have all continued to depart as scheduled - but due to the flooded roads and damaged railways, on-ground travel services in the region have been halted or cancelled. Reaching your accommodation once you land could prove challenging, with trains between Bordeaux and Toulouse cancelled as of Tuesday, 20 May, 2025. It's also best to check with your hotel or holiday rental if their property has been impacted by the floods. 7 As for access to Normandy, flights to and from Paris CDG and internal trains are all still running as planned. Most airlines will not offer compensation for any disruption caused by flooding, but if you purchased travel insurance prior to the start of the floods, you will be protected financially. Is it safe to travel to the French Riviera and Var? The UK Government does not currently have any warnings in place cautioning against travel to France. However, it is advised to continue checking with both your airline for cancellations, and for any official updates as the situation continues to develop.
