Roglic abandons Giro d'Italia after latest crash

Primoz Roglic was forced to abandon the Giro d'Italia on Tuesday, ending a troubled fortnight for one of the pre-race favourites on the Grand Tour. Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe leader Roglic left the three-week Italian race after being caught in a crash alongside Richard Carapaz, who was able to continue, during the punishing 16th stage, organisers said. A five-time Grand Tour champion including the 2023 Giro, Roglic had already crashed three times in this year's edition, including in a mass pile up towards the end of stage 14. Roglic was three minutes and 53 seconds behind overall leader Isaac Del Toro before deciding to start Tuesday's 203km push from Piazzola sul Brenta to San Valentino, which features around 4,700 metres of climbing including three category one ascents. The 35-year-old had been one of the men to watch ahead of this year's race but was left way off the pace after losing 90 seconds during the previous stage on Sunday. "I don't really think it's realistic anymore to do the overall standings, I'm obviously fighting for survival," said Roglic before the stage. "I still came to the start today and I couldn't even ride the bike yesterday, so I'll just see if I can ride." Tuesday's withdrawal is another major disappointment for veteran Roglic, who has had a quiet season so far apart from victory in the Tour of Catalonia in March. It is the fifth time in his last nine Grand Tours he has failed to finish the race. Two other riders were forced to withdraw on Tuesday, with Ineos' Joshua Tarling out after hitting a guardrail. More worrying was Italian Alessio Martinelli who plunged into a ravine after sliding off course during a descent. Martinelli's team Bardiani said the 24-year-old was conscious when he was taken away by ambulance and was in "stable" condition.

CAS confirms doping ban for Colombian rider Miguel Angel Lopez

– Colombian cyclist Miguel Angel Lopez, third in the Giro and the Vuelta in 2018, will have to serve his four-year ban for doping in full after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) rejected his appeal on May 7. CAS rubber-stamped the suspension imposed by the sport's governing body the International Cycling Union (UCI) on the 31-year-old in May 2024 – backdated to July 25, 2023. Lopez, who won the Tour of Switzerland in 2016 and the Tour of Catalonia in 2019, tested positive for Menotropin – a hormone which shares properties with growth hormone – and was found to be in possession of it during the 2022 Giro. 'The Panel is comfortably satisfied that UCI has discharged its burden of proof and unanimously ruled that Mr Lopez possessed a prohibited substance,' read the statement from CAS. 'The Appeal filed by Mr Lopez is dismissed and the decision issued by the UCI is fully upheld. Mr Lopez remains suspended for a period of ineligibility of four years, commencing on July 25, 2023.' Lopez's suspension is backdated to his provisional suspension by the UCI. The UCI suspended him after obtaining evidence from police in Spain and the Spanish National Anti-Doping Organisation. Up to when he was first suspended, Lopez had been riding for third division Team Medellin-EPM, after being fired by the Astana outfit in December 2022. Astana claimed he had links to Marcos Maynar, a Spanish doctor at the heart of a doping investigation at the time by the International Testing Agency. He had already been provisionally suspended for a week by his team after being arrested at Madrid airport in July 2022. In athletics, Brazilian Daniel Do Nascimento, who holds the marathon area record for the Americas, has been banned for five years after two positive doping tests, the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) said on May 7. The AIU ban is backdated to July 15, 2024, with all results scrubbed from July 4 of the same year, the date of his first positive test for prohibited anabolic steroids rostanolone, metenolone and nandrolone. Do Nascimento, 26, set an Americas area record of 2hr 04min 51sec at the Seoul marathon in 2022. AFP Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.

Vine takes second victory at Coppi e Bartali

UAE Team Emirates' Jay Vine doubled-up to take his second win of the week at Coppi e Bartali, winning in solo fashion on the final stage from Brisighella to Forli (132.5km). The Australian tasted his first victory of the season on stage 3 from Riccione to Cesena under wet conditions and he would have a repeat of that scenario today. The fifth and final stage got underway with Ben Tulett (Visma-LAB) as race leader after his victory yesterday, with Igor Arrieta also in the hunt for the overall at just 23'. There were multiple climbs on the parcours which led to a leading group of around 25 riders forming with all the main contenders present including Jay Vine. Vine was aggressive throughout the stage – hitting-out with a stinging attack at -35km to disrupt the group, before making his decisive move inside the final 20km, going clear solo. He would maintain a gap of 30' to the chasing group containing his teammate Igor Arrieta who was monitoring Tulett and the other favourites behind. TT specialist Vine began to stretch out an advantage on the technical narrow descent into Forli – entering the final 10km with a comfortable lead over the chasers and holding his lead all the way to the finish. Igor Arrieta stayed with the GC group to cement his third place in the overall classification, finishing off a strong week for the Emirati outfit who also won the prize for best team. Vine: 'It was a pretty hard day, but I was glad to be able to get another victory. The crash on stage 2 ruled me out of the GC but I was pleased to make up for it with these two stage wins. 'Today the plan was to help Covi and Arrieta into the leaders jersey but the race played out in a particular way which saw me go off the front and ended up fighting it out for the stage win. It was also my first win on the new aero bike which was pretty cool. Igor managed to take third in the GC too, so all things considered we're happy with the week.' Meanwhile, Slovenian veteran Primoz Roglic won the Tour of Catalonia on Sunday by powering to a solo triumph in the seventh stage in Barcelona. The 35-year-old, who won the race in 2023, trailed home favourite Juan Ayuso by one second going into the finale, but eased to victory by 28 seconds. Spaniard Enric Mas came in third overall, 58 seconds behind the dominant Roglic. 'Beautiful, I had great fun here,' said Roglic. 'I figured it out, I'm ready, the legs are ready so I was pretty much enjoying this week. 'A bit of holidays and then slowly start to build up towards the Giro (d'Italia).' Four time Vuelta a Espana winner Roglic was among the favourites after last year's winner, his compatriot Tadej Pogacar, decided not to defend his title. After winds played havoc with the sixth stage on Saturday -- the route was modified significantly, with only 25 kilometres of racing permitted -- weather conditions were good for the 88.2 kilometre finale starting and finishing in Barcelona.

"The big mountain stage I was hoping for yesterday was cancelled," said Roglic. "It came down to the last stage, the team was working well, we were racing well and I really enjoyed this week." Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe rider Roglic claimed the intermediate sprint with Ayuso third, eking out a second's advantage overall on the Spaniard. However in the second intermediate sprint UAE Team Emirates' Ayuso came out on top with Roglic third, restoring his single second lead. With little over 20 kilometres remaining Roglic broke away with Ayuso unable to follow. "After the sprint (I saw) if I wanted to win I had to do something," explained Roglic. Laurens De Plus and Lennert Van Eetvelt were able to stay within a few seconds of Roglic in the final lap but the Slovenian crossed the line with his arms raised in celebration. De Plus came in 14 seconds behind Roglic, beating Van Eetvelt, third, in a sprint.

Vine wins Coppi e Bartali stage three as Roglic claims Tour of Catalonia lead

Jay Vine claimed victory on stage three of the Coppi e Bartali for UAE Team Emirates-XRG, arriving to the line solo on the 142km trek from Riccione to Cesena. Vine attacked with Mauri Vansevenant (Soudal-Quick Step) just before the final climb of Diolaguardia with -25km to go, with the pair building up a slender lead of no more than 20 seconds. The Australian rider would go clear solo over the top of the climb and maintain a small advantage on the wet descent. As the group chased behind, Vine opened the afterburners to put his time-trial ability to the test with the Australian putting in a gutsy performance to take his first win of the 2025 campaign. Vine: 'It's really amazing to get a win on the board. It's my first win in Italy which is pretty special and the first since my son was born so it's really motivating having him and my wife cheering at home. 'The team is on a great wave at the moment and I'm delighted to add to it and get my name on that list of victories, it's really special.' Roglic claims Tour of Catalonia lead with stage four win: Over in Catalunya, only a photo finish could seperate Primoz Roglic (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe) and UAE Team Emirates-XRG's Juan Ayuso once again. This time around, it was Ayuso who was forced to settle for second place on the day, ceding the leader's jersey to the Slovenian. With another impressive performance to add to a string of recent highlights, Ayuso ended stage 4 of the Volta a Catalunya in the young rider's jersey. In a repeat of Wednesday's stage to La Molina, Thursday's summit finish atop the Montserrat Monastery produced a barnstorming battle between the race's two strongest climbers. Although it was Roglič who ultimately triumphed, it was Ayuso who had made the biggest attack of the stage in the final kilometres. Ayuso's attack came with 2.6km to ride, after his UAE Team Emirates-XRG team-mates had performed their duties to the mark. At first, it was Julius Johansen and Domen Novak who worked tirelessly to keep the day's breakaway in check, before Pavel Sivakov guided his team to the foot of the final climb, Pablo Torres ramped up the pace and Marc Soler buried himself to perhaps make himself the day's unofficial MVP. Once the Spaniard had spent his last bullet, Adam Yates went to task at the front and all that was left was for Ayuso to make his premeditated attack. Just as the team had discussed in the morning, the 22-year-old launched a searing acceleration in a bid to drop his rivals. Beginning the stage in the race lead, Ayuso was a man on a mission. With one final look round to Mikel Landa (Soudal Quick-Step), Ayuso ridded himself of all but one rival - the man he would bring to the line to decide the day's winner in a sprint. As they crested the final bend, Ayuso and Roglic went head-to-head in another exciting finish, and their respective bonus seconds taken throughout the course of the race ensure that the pair will begin stage 5 level on time. A sprint finish should be expected in the next stage, before the pair will clash once again to decide the general classification over the weekend. 'I had something left at the end, so luckily I won,' said Roglic. '(It's) definitely not (over, there are) hard days to come, for the moment I'm going well, we are in a good position, and we will see. 'We go day by day and we will see by the end.' Stage five of the seven-day race takes riders 172 kilometres from Pauls to Amposta. Agencies
