KL Rahul Won't Open vs England, Shubman Gill At No. 4: India's Batting Order Decoded By Great. No. 3 Is...
India's Tour of England, that starts on June 20, is the start of new chapter in cricket in the country. While in T20Is the scene is now the new normal, in Tests too now Indian cricket team will be without Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. The series, under new captain Shubman Gill, will be an acid test for the side. With regular opener Rohit and No. 4 Kohli not part of the team anymore, it will be interesting to see whom the team management picks. Several reports have claimed that KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal are the likely openers while Sai Sudharshan will bat at No. 3. Shubman Gill will be the No. 4 batter. Former Australia captain and current Punjab Kings coach Ricky Ponting, however, had a different take. "I think (Sai) Sudarshan and (Yashasvi) Jaiswal will open the batting (in England) as Sudarshan just looks like a class player to me and technically I think he could do well at Test level," Ponting said on ICC Review. "They'll have two pretty young opening batters, so they might look to go for someone that's got a bit more experience at No.3. "Whether that's KL (Rahul) or Karun (Nair) at No.3, and then Shubman might end up being that No.4 player, which will probably make life for him a little bit easier as a captain as well. "Not having to be opening or batting at No.3 as a young captain might make it easier. Their top five will probably be Sudarshan, Jaiswal, KL, Gill and Karun Nair for the start of the England series." Gill has hinted that the team management will take a call on the batting order after the India's Intra-Squad match that starts on June 13. "We haven't really decided on still have some time. We will be playing intra squad match and we will be having a 10-day camp in London, so we still have a little bit of time. I think we can decide on the batting order once we go there," he said. "When I came to know, there was an opportunity to captain the Test team, it was overwhelming. Having said that It's a big responsibility. Looking forward to this great challenge that will be presented to us," Shubman Gill said before departing for England. Listen to the latest songs, only on

Shubman Gill's Credentials Doubted, Overseas Numbers "Not Healthy As Batter, Let Alone As Captain"
Shubman Gill era has begun in Indian cricket. The 25-year-old star was named the captain of the Indian cricket squad for the Tour of England starting June 20. At 25, Gill has become one of the youngest players to hold the position in recent years. Though he lacks captaincy experience in the red-ball format, he has led India in a five-match T20I assignment in Zimbabwe in 2024. Gill has also been captaining the Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Gill has also served as vice-captain in ODIs and T20Is. He was Rohit Sharma 's deputy in India's victorious Champions Trophy campaign in the UAE in February 2025. In Test cricket, Gill has played 32 matches and scored 1,893 runs, including five centuries. Former India opener Aakash Chopra has called Shubman Gill as India Test captain as a 'investment of faith'. "Lots (of challenges) actually in Test cricket. If it were ODI format, we would have said absolutely fine. He is the heir apparent. He is annointed as the vice captain for a significant period of time. So, we saw it coming but when you talk about Test cricket, you'd say he's still trying to figure out a place for himself, especially outside of the subcontinent. His average is 35. His overseas numbers are around 25, and that's not very healthy as a batter alone, let alone be the captain of the side," Chopra told ESPNCricinfo. "So, I see this as an investment of faith. You see somebody, you see promise and potential. You go with that guy with a lot of hope and some amount of belief that we are making the right choice." Former batting coach Sanjay Bangar believes the decisions taken by Ajit Agarkar 's selection committee will be "vindicated" if the Indian Test side under new skipper Shubman Gill pulls off a series win in England. In 90 years of Test cricket against England, India have only won away Test series thrice -- in 1971, 1986 and 2007. 'If this group of players manages to win a Test series in England, I think that's going to be a great start for his (Gill's) leadership tenure," Bangar told JioHotstar after Gill was announced as new Test skipper. "The calls that have been taken will be vindicated if the tour goes India's way. I'm pretty hopeful that this will be a series wherein you win a couple of Test matches, and if the other side falters, you might just end up winning the series as well,' Bangar said. Bangar also echoed Ajit Agarkar's sentiment that pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah shouldn't be overburdened. 'First of all, we have to make sure Bumrah doesn't get overburdened. That is where the team management will have a massive impact by using the bowling line-up picked around him. "We saw in the Australia series, there were so many all-rounders, and Bumrah was at times overused because the team wanted him to bowl at all times, and it affected his bowling speeds. In one of the Tests, he was down to 120-129. "To help him play five Test matches, you need a stronger bowling unit operating alongside him. The more matches he plays, the higher the chances (are) of India winning,' Bangar gave his opinion.

Shreyas Iyer Set For Royal Snub In India's Squad For England Tour? "BCCI Selectors Aren't...": Report
Shreyas Iyer has been one of the most consistent performers in the IPL 2025. In India's 2025 Champions Trophy win, Shreyas Iyer was the top scorer for the team with a run tally of 243. He has also played 14 Tests, with the last being a match against England in February, 2024. Keeping in mind Shreyas Iyer's recent form, there is a school of though that Iyer should be picked for India's Test squad for the Tour of England, starting June 20. However, if a report is to be believed, Iyer is set to be snubbed. The middle-order batter has done well in the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy season. The 30-year-old slammed 480 at an average of 68.57, with two tons in five matches in the Ranji Trophy. Iyer was ignored from the India A squad that will tour England, starting later this month. "Iyer's new stance, bold strokeplay, carefree attitude to batting are all suited to the white-ball game now. The selectors aren't convinced about his red-ball skills," TOI quoted a source as saying. The BCCI selection meeting will take place on Saturday followed by a press conference. The Indian cricket team is set to tour England in 2025 for a five-match Test series, part of the 2025-2027 ICC World Test Championship. The series will take place from June to August 2025, with matches at Headingley (Leeds), Edgbaston (Birmingham), Lord's (London), Old Trafford (Manchester), and The Oval (London). This will be India's first bilateral series since both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli announced their retirement from Test cricket earlier this month. Prior to the series, there will also be three India 'A' matches against England Lions, the first of which will take place at the Ground in Canterbury on May 30. Abhimanyu Easwaran will lead India 'A' in those matches, with wicketkeeper/batter Dhruv Jurel appointed vice captain. Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan will link up with the 'A' squad ahead of the second match. Rohit ended his 11-year-long Test career on May 7 after representing the country in 67 Tests. This left India with a massive leadership hole ahead of the England tour starting in June, which will kickstart their ICC World Test Championship campaign. Rohit made his Test debut against the West Indies in November 2013 and went on to represent India in 67 Tests. He amassed 4,301 runs at an average of 40.57, with 12 centuries and 18 fifties. Virat Kohli also announced his retirement from Tests earlier this month, marking an end to a brilliant career spanning 14 years and 123 Tests.
