Woodland, Towne Acres getting new principals
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — Two Johnson City elementary schools will have new principals for the 2025-26 school year. Johnson City Schools announced Richard Hutson will be the next principal at Towne Acres Elementary. Hutson has been the principal at Cherokee Elementary since 2018. 'I am incredibly excited about the opportunity to join the amazing school community of Towne Acres Elementary School,' Hutson said in a news release. 'I look forward to working with each member during this transition and building on the high level of success they have become accustomed to. Towne Acres has a rich history of academic success, and I am eager to begin working with Dr. Simmons and the faculty and staff to ensure a smooth transition as we prepare for the 2025-2026 school year.' Hutson replaces Josh Simmons at Towne Acres, who will now serve as the principal at Woodland Elementary. Simmons took the Woodland role as Karen Reach is retiring at the end of the summer. 'I am extremely excited to be joining the Woodland Elementary community,' Simmons said. 'Woodland has a long history of academic excellence and providing wonderful opportunities for students. They have an amazing team of teachers and staff, and I look forward to working with them to continue to provide an excellent elementary school experience for students. I am excited to work with Dr. Reach over the next month to ensure we have a smooth transition to the 2025-26 school year.' Simmons had been the principal at Towne Acres since 2018. Towne Acres students participate in STEAM Day activities
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — Towne Acres students participated in an annual STEAM Day on Friday. STEAM Day, which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math, included various community partners displaying interesting ways they use STEAM. Towne Acres Principal Josh Simmons said science is a favorite among Towne Acres students. 'I think the earlier you can expose kids to STEAM-related fields and STEAM-related activities and the opportunities that are going to be provided for them when they get to middle school and high school, I think it just gets them excited and inspires them,' Simmons said. ETSU-Con, cat cafe opens, food truck rally and more | Weekend events in the Tri-Cities Simmons said every student needs to find the thing that interests them. 'Whether it's something academic, whether it's something sports-related, dance, music, arts. If it's something that's STEAM-related, I just think anything we can do to inspire kids and to get them curious [about] where they want to go and learn more on their own, I think that's a great thing.' Towne Acres School Resource Officer transitions to SVU investigator role
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — Officer Erik Hilton is saying goodbye to Towne Acres Elementary School for a new role with the Special Victims Unit. After almost seven years of service as a School Resource Officer (SRO), Hilton will now be an SVU investigator with the Johnson City Police Department (JCPD). 'This move allows me to continue being an advocate and a voice for children, just in a different way,' Hilton said in a news release. 'I've always been passionate about protecting and guiding young people, and now, I can do that in a way that brings justice and support to those who need it most.' He's played a pivotal role in programs like D.A.R.E, Project Alert, Police Explorers and more, the JCPD stated. 'My favorite part of the day was easy – the morning car line,' Hilton said in the release. 'Greeting the kids, the high fives and the hugs – that interaction really sets the tone for their entire day. It's been a privilege to be part of that.' Towne Acres Principal Dr. Josh Simmons said Hilton has been an incredible part of the school community. 'His positive energy, dedication and the genuine connections he formed with students made a lasting impact,' Simmons said in the release. 'He will be greatly missed, but we know he will continue to make a difference in his new role at the JCPD.' Officer Shawn Phillips started as the new Towne Acres SRO on Monday, according to the JCPD.
