Man held after 4-county high speed chase and crash
Central Texas (FOX 44) – An 18-year-old man is being held after a Wednesday night pursuit through four counties with speeds frequently near 120 miles per hour. An arrest affidavit for Ruben Quioz Rangel, Jr., of San Antonio, states it started when a Department of Public Safety trooper made a traffic stop on a white Toyota Carolla on I-35 northbound near Ross Road in McLennan County about 8:00 p.m. Wednesday. The trooper said he had been advised earlier that the vehicle vehicle contained a wanted person. After confirming the license plate number the trooper conducted the stop with the vehicle pulling over. The affidavit stated that the driver appeared very nervous as the trooper walked up to the car. The trooper asked him to keep both hands outside the driver side window and he complied. When the trooper asked him to turn off the engine and make sure the car was in 'park', the driver reached like he was going to do that, but instead sped off going north on the Interstate. The trooper advised his dispatch that he was in pursuit as the Toyota headed north into Hill County. The affidavit stated that the Toyota was being driven with its lights off, weaving through all lanes of traffic and between other vehicles. The trooper reported the speed was consistently between 98 and 120 miles per hour. The pursuit lead through Hillsboro to the area where I-35 splits into I-35W and I-35E where the driver was seen with his hands out the driver side window appearing to give up. The vehicle flashers came on with the car moving onto the right shoulder as if it were going to come to a stop, but once again sped off. The pursuit went north a few miles to FM2959 where the Toyota exited the highway, then left the roadway after overcorrecting in a curve. After leaving the roadway, the Toyota turned left onto FM2959, going over I-35 on the overpass, then getting back on the Interstate going south. The affidavit stated that the Toyota continued with its lights off through Hillsboro again and back into McLennan County. Sheriff's deputies were assisting at that point and deployed spike strips to try to stop the vehicle but were unsuccessful. The Toyota stayed on the main lanes going through Waco and continuing southbound. The trooper reported as they neared the Bell/Falls County line he was told that troopers in Bell County were setting up to assist. The trooper reported that speeds were still running at around 120 miles per hour. When they entered Troy the Toyota left the roadway and entered the parking lot of the Quick Trip station off the southbound service road. With one trooper following it, the original trooper stayed on the service road to cut him off from leaving the parking lot. As the trooper was about to turn right into the parking lot, the Toyota drove head on into his patrol unit, striking on the right passenger side. The trooper's air bags deployed making him temporarily immobile. He managed to get free and ran to the driver side of the Toyota attempting to keep the driver contained in the vehicle. The driver broke free with the affidavit stating he ran into the QuickTrip store. Troopers followed him in and after a brief bit of wrestling got him in custody. Man who fled Belton police in February arrested in Temple Rangel was placed in handcuffs and placed in a patrol unit. Rangel was checked by medical personnel who determined he had a cut on his chin as a result of the crash and would need stitches. He was taken to Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Temple where he was treated and medically cleared before being taken to the McLennan County Jail. During this time, it was found that Rangel had active arrest warrants out of Medina County for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and burglary of a habitation with intent other felony. It was also determined that he had no driver's license. He remained in the McLennan County Jail Thursday on the Medina County charges along with multiple other charges including evading arrest with a motor vehicle, evading arrest on foot, resisting arrest and no driver license. Driver leaving parking lot killed in Riverside Drive crash
A driver pulling out of a parking lot on Riverside Drive was killed in a crash on Thursday night, according to Cincinnati police. The Hamilton County Coroner's Office said the person killed in the crash was Nicholas J. Kammerer, 31. Kammerer was driving a Toyota Carolla out of a private parking lot in the 900 block of Riverside Drive just before 8:15 p.m. when the vehicle collided with a 2020 Dodge Charger going eastbound on Riverside Drive, according to police. The Cincinnati Fire Department took Kammerer to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center where he died. The 21-year-old driver of the Dodge Charger was not injured. Police have not named that is being investigated as a contributing factor to the crash. Any witnesses to this crash are asked to contact the Cincinnati Police Department's Traffic Unit at 513-352-2514.
