Most notorious speed camera in Toronto chopped down for 5th time

Toronto's most notorious speed camera in the city's west end, near High Park, has been vandalized and chopped down once again. The ASE (automated speed enforcement) camera on Parkside Drive, near Algonquin Avenue, was taken down sometime between Thursday and Friday. It marks the fifth time in six months that the speed camera has been vandalized. In one of those, the speed camera was cut down and tossed into a semi-frozen duck pond nearby in late December 2024. A post on Friday morning in a Facebook group called Safe Parkside showed the speed camera lying on the grass, detached from the post that once held it. Safe Parkside / Facebook According to Safe Parkside, this is the city's highest-grossing speed camera, with around $7 million in fines and tens of thousands of tickets issued from it. Story continues below advertisement Faraz Ghloizadeh, the co-chair of Safe Parkside, has been advocating for safety on Parkside Drive for the last decade, and he told Global News on Friday there's 'lots of frustration' around the situation. Ghloizadeh said he wants to see more done, suggesting physical infrastructure changes be put in on the street level in order to slow them down. 'Unfortunately, you're still seeing extreme signs of speeding on Parkside,' he said. Parkside Drive is about a two-kilometre stretch from Bloor Street in the north to Lake Shore Boulevard West in the south. Ghloizadeh said he often sees cars speeding for most of that stretch up until the end where the camera is located and then the motorists slow down. 'This isn't really achieving the safety the community is looking for,' Ghloizadeh said. 2:04 Suspended driver who killed two on Parkside Drive sentenced to six and a half years in prison The speed-detecting camera was initially installed after the death of two seniors — 71-year-old Valdemar Avila and his wife, 69-year-old Fatima Avila — on Oct. 12, 2021. Story continues below advertisement The couple was stopped at a red light on Parkside Drive when police said the driver of a BMW rear-ended the Toyota Matrix they were sitting in. That initial collision caused a chain-reaction collision with three other vehicles. A collision reconstructionist had testified during the court process that the driver was going well over 100 km/h. The driver was convicted and sentenced to 6.5 years in prison. City crews were on scene Friday, picking up the camera and taking it away. There is no word on if or when a replacement will be put in. Global News has reached out to the City of Toronto, but did not hear back in time for publication.

Road-raging driver who tried to run man down on Brooklyn highway turns self in: police

Police have arrested the road-raging driver they say tried to mow down another motorist following a fender bender on a Brooklyn expressway before speeding off with his victim clinging to his hood, officials said. Jacob Angstadt, 27, surrendered to cops at the 84th Precinct with his attorney by his side around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, about a month after cops released his image, saying he was wanted for a near-fatal hit-and-run on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway on Feb. 16. The chaos unfolded near the Tillary St. exit in downtown Brooklyn just after 1:40 p.m. Sunday, when Angstadt, who was driving a Toyota Matrix, slammed into the back of a 34-year-old man's car, cops said. When the victim got out to take a photo of Angstadt and his car, the suspect became enraged, hit the gas pedal, and sped toward him, police said. Desperate to avoid being mowed down, the victim leaped onto Angstadt's hood and clung on for nearly 330 feet until he was thrown from the hatchback. The victim landed on the roadway, suffering serious injuries to his hands, arms and body as Angstadt sped away, according to cops. Medics took the victim to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition. Detectives quickly identified the driver as Angstadt, who lives in Philadelphia. When he surrendered accompanied by his attorney Wednesday, cops charged him with assault, leaving the scene of an accident and criminal mischief. His arraignment in Brooklyn Criminal Court was pending Wednesday.

RCMP asking for help locating missing Prince County man

Police in Prince Edward Island are asking for the public's help in finding an 83-year-old Summerside man who's been missing since Friday. Elmer Arsenault was last seen Friday at 11:30 a.m. at the Wellington Co-Op driving a silver 2013 Toyota Matrix with the P.E.I. licence plate 789 JB, RCMP said in a news release. Arsenault is described as five feet 10 inches tall and 220 pounds with grey short hair and green eyes. He was last seen wearing a green hoodie and grey pants. Family and friends have also reated a Facebook group where they've been posting updates about the search efforts. Hoping for help from the public Cpl. Gavin Moore, the P.E.I. RCMP's media relations officer, said the police continued to search roads in Prince County overnight and into Saturday. He encouraged people to check any doorbell camera or security footage they may have from the time Arsenault was last spotted in the Wellington area. "We're certainly grateful for all of the community members who are out and making their own efforts to try and locate Mr. Arsenault," Moore told CBC News. "The more eyes we have out there looking, the more possibilities and the more hope we have of finding a positive resolution to this." Moore said the RCMP has contacted ground search and rescue and air services about adding those resources to the search efforts. "When we have winter conditions and somebody who is 83 years old, those are certainly factors that come into this," he said. "We certainly hope that Mr. Arsenault is well and our efforts continue to find him."
